4 schollys left. Who you want?

Recommended Posts

I really like Igor Milicic and the versatility he can bring.

William Kyle would be great to take defensive pressure off our bigs who can move around bit.

With those two holes filled I would love to bring in guys who can come in and learn and grow. Ideally play a bit but be future guys who actually want to stick around.

With how Hoiberg has done it, I don’t see us using more than 8… maybe 9 guys and we have about hit that number.

Still think we probably need another shooter but maybe the incoming freshmen fill that void.

It's possible Mast and Ulis could be "juniors" eligibility wise next season.

I very much doubt that the NCAA is going to give Ulis back a year.  I'll leave it to the reader at this point to decide if Mast is going to redshirt next year because of surgery recovery.

I can see holding one for the next month or so. Especially after seeing the post about players waiting for their last NIL checks before hitting the portal. But by the time summer workouts roll around, I’d like a full cupboard of players competing for playing time.

1.  Kyle

2.

-A.  Explosive combo guard if Mast is healthy

-B.  Igor if he isn't.

3.  Best young player willing to sit a year before playing time

4.  Scholie to Sam H. or Jacobson

I don't really believe we can add 4 more high quality players who are ready this year.  There are only so many minutes to go around.

2 bigs, 1 that’s a stretchier 4 with some bounce and another who’s more traditional to play opposing 5s.

Then just 2 guys we think will have a chance to actually be here next year regardless of position.  Suspect these two need to be from towns within X miles of Lincoln.

At some point whatever we call what the current portal is will get some restrictions put on it(hopefully sooner than later imo) and just adding 10 new players each year is gonna be tougher than it is now.  Plus this is the last round of covid seniors so the portal should shrink next year regardless

It will mostly be the last round of covid guys....but we're still technically two more classes before the covid impact will be completely erased.

Ex.

2020-2021  Covid

2021-2022  True Frosh

2022-2023 RS Frosh

2023-2024 RS Soph

2024-2025 RS Junior

2025-2026 RS Senior

There will be fewer examples of this after this season, but it is still technically possible.  Especially for guys who were injured post-Covid.

I am basing this off the rumors and vibe I'm getting that Reink is not back, or at a minimum sitting out this year due to injury/surgery.

1. Kyle or Payne don't care

2. Igor

3. A violently athletic guard who can get to the hoop and guard like a psycho

4. Young guy, another hs'er or transfer who understands their role or is sitting.

Igor

After those two, I am pretty flexible.  I would maybe flex towards youth/projects/specialists.

Agreed. We could take another portal guard, but seems like Hoiberg is being very honest about what players' roles will be to avoid any locker room issues so I'm not sure one will want to come at this point. It appears that we're recruiting as if we'll have two bigs on the floor the majority of the time, like with Allick and Mast this year. That means Gary would be slotted to play ~20 mpg at the "3" (and likely still some at the 4). So, you'd have 80 mpg at the 1 and 2 and roughly 20 mpg at the 3 (100 minutes total) to divvy up between Williams, Griffith, Ulis, Worster, Hoiberg, Janowski and possibly another guard. At least two of those players wouldn't be in the rotation. We're not going to play 11 guys.

1. Kyle (but will take Payne)

2. Igor

3. transfer guard with a speciality.  I don’t care whether it’s getting to the hoop or knocking down 3s at a 40% clip.  I want them to have a speciality they are confident in and know their role.

4. Leave open until at least players who declared for draft decide whether they’re in or out.  There’s usually a little mini rush on the market once this happens as players you thought might stay/be gone do the opposite.

For me it depends on what happens with Mast. I feel good about him coming back, solely based on it seeming like he's hosting visits (he usually follows the portal guys immediately following visits on IG).

1) an athletic big is non-negotiable for me. Has to happen. Whether that be Kyle or someone new, has to happen.

2) a shooter. Brendan Hausen would definitely be a good option. Essegien would also if he doesn't commit to IU here soon. There's others out right now, but an off ball movement shooter needs to be a priority.

3) if mast is back and good to play, then this one is a bit of a wild card. I could see this one being a 4 body with multiple years of eligibility (Sam Walters for example). If he ISN'T good to play, Igor is the priority. If that falls through, and I'm not entirely confident we land him tbh, they need to pivot to a game proven 4.

4) this could be a few different types of guys. Id personally take a HS recruit that has potential, but needs time, but those typically don't work out. Could also be a Cale Jacobsen, but there's no "it has to be this archetype".

I'm very intrigued on how they finish this class. Id say the top  of the 6-7 is pretty locked, with mast being the wild card. I personally think janowski will break into the rotation by years end too, but I'm projecting him outside of that top 6-7 at this point. Probably can add one or two more rotation pieces, or guys to compete for a rotation spot at minimum. Athletic big obviously is one. Shooter, and if mast is hurt, a stretch 4 like Igor

1.  William Kyle III

2.  William Kyle III

3.  William Kyle III

4.  William Kyle III

If saying the same name 3 times doesn't improve the odds of landing him, then I'll go with this:

1.  William Kyle III

2.  Igor Milicic (I'm assuming Mast is out next year)

3.  A big time shooter who knows his role.

4.  Matar Diop . . . more specifically a big athletic project who doesn't expect minutes and can give you a good look on the scout team. (I'm assuming this player will transfer out no matter what unless you catch lightning in a bottle)

* I thought about getting a lock-down defender, but I'm thinking our defense will take a big jump just because we are adding a lot more length and athleticism to the scheme.

As someone who doesn't follow recruiting very closely this is some good info.

I have big concerns about Ulis eligibility. Our luck is that when these sorts of issues drag out related eligibility the less likely it is to work in our favor.

Does anyone have a timeline for a decision?

Just based on what we have now it looks like we only have one more open starter/rotation slot and that needs to be a big.

Even w/o Ulis we are still stocked at Guard.

With HCFH propensity to run 3 guards I have high hopes for Jano to break into the lineup in that 8th spot.

The only things we know for sure are that BW and RM will be starters. JG will begin the season as a starter.

This roster, right now, has a lot of flexibility and more athleticism.

We didn't lose a single guy to the portal that I was disappointed to lose.

While losing that many guys does look bad; to me it was more like a control burn.

I suppose we know this for sure if Mast is actually here, able to play.   But it's doubtful he'll play.  The knee is a big problem and wasn't fixed by the December procedure.   Props to him for persisting and finishing the season.  I doubt we make the dance if he would have ended it mid-season.   I think the plan is for surgery, and the type that has him out 10-12 months.   He has a great doc, through Fred's connections.   But barring a surprise, you won't see him on court next fall.

NCAA already ruled on this in November. I don't think there is any doubt that Ulis is eligible to play this upcoming season.

“Effective immediately, reinstatement guidelines for student-athletes who wager on teams at their school — excluding their own team — will start at requiring one season of ineligibility and a loss of one year of eligibility…” the DI council stated in a press release.

“Previous guidelines, as approved in June, prescribed permanent ineligibility for those cases. The adjusted guidelines may be applied to cases in which student-athletes are currently serving suspensions related to wagering on a different team at their own school that were reported on or after May 2, 2023.”

I think we need a big and a wing and to be a little better than last season.  Sam Hoiberg is an awfully good insurance plan at guard though.  I really don't mind him being in the rotation at all.  I wish he was a point guard offensively, because defensively he can guard the hell out of the perimter.

Sam is a top tier weak side defender. But he does struggle to stay in front of long athletic ball handlers.
