Chris Holtmann

3 things

1. Hoiberg is still my coach.

2. Posting in here after we lose is like shopping for groceries; you'll do whatever when you're running on empty.

3. Holtmann is a good coach, he would win here if we had an opening one day.

I think most of us are still in Step 1, not admitting we have a problem...

I'm really torn between knowing any other coach would have been fired by now or would at the very least be getting ready to list his house on the one hand, and just being tired of coaching searches on the other.

I watch what the team is trying to do this year and I can respect what I see on the floor. On offense and on defense, they at least have a scheme. And I think it's a scheme that would work if we just had more talented players.

That's our weakness. The overall lack of talent. Particularly in terms of having at least a couple of dudes who can fill it up.

So, if we somehow manage to keep the good players from this squad who have remaining eligibility, keep our November signee, and somehow hit paydirt in the portal this spring ...

It's at least worth seeing whether Fred still has a shot at turning this around.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that Hoiberg is the coach next year.

I have come around to the idea that it is pretty obvious he's back next year. Though there's still quite the stretch of games where we could lose 4-5 in a row and it could be ugly.

Then shouldn't he get an extension?

If retained, he'll at least revert to his original contract, with maybe earning back some or all of his reduced compensation from this year.  At least that's how I understand it.

And yes, I imagine an extension is also a distinct possibility.

Fred's finally figured out the formula.  It's unfortunate that significant injuries has derailed what could have been a really good season.  Besides Gary and Bando, losing Q and Lloyd has left this team with little depth.  The fact they still compete their tails off night in and night out is a testament to the character we finally have on this team and the coaching they have received.  I am not sure I care at this point how many more we win as long as we compete and play hard.  The deck is squarely stacked against this team  and I do not believe they will fold like a cheap lawn chair.  I do not want to go through another coaching change at this point.  It's a total crapshoot and there are just no guarantees as we've seen with Hoiberg and the lofty expectations we had for him initially   Hoiberg has the formula and if we can fill out the roster next year with a legit scorer and point guard, I like what we have coming back (ok, a dominant big would help as well!).  Plus, our freshmen are going to get invaluable experience which hopefully is a springboard for their development and gives us better depth next year.

I don’t disagree with a lot of this. I too am weary of coaching searches.  But a lot of us said the same stuff when Tim was fired.  Grass isn’t always greener, team plays hard, injuries derailed what could have been a good year, just have to find a few solid transfers to fill out our rooster again next year…

So while I too am weary of coaching searches, I still want to see this team make the post season or wouldn’t be upset if we looked in another direction at years end.  If we weren’t willing to “settle” for a coach who took us to the dance and 3 post seasons, I don’t think we need to settle for one who hasn’t won more than 10 games in a given year for four years straight (so far).  Still holding out hope that we win more this year.

If this wasn't rock bottom for them last year, then clearly they don't know what rock bottom actually is.

And I'm guessing that most of the Ohio State basketball team would start for "the Ohio State" football team.

Speaking of football players playing basketball and vice versa, I always thought Tom Osborne should have recruited Mikki Moore to come over to the football team just for goal line situations. Have your 300# DL line up as a fullback; have a couple of wideouts fade to each corner.

But Mikki Moore was 6'11 with really long arms and one of the best vertical leaps on the basketball team. Put him in the slot, throw the ball high like you're running a lob play for a dunk, and make some little DB try to cover him.

I always figured it would be fun to watch and at least worth a try.

Can we add Nate Oats to the list of "coaches we want but we're not going to get"? He's 4-2 against ranked teams (W: #12, #1, #1, #21; L: #20, #15) and 7-0 in the SEC right now.

He was at the top of my list last time we were talking about vacancies and he's continued on an upward trajectory since then.

Yeah, he's got Alabama ranked #2 right now.  I'd find it doubtful he'd leave there.

I believe he should get out of the shadow of Saban and the football team.  Come to a basketball school like Nebraska. 😉

My, how the mighty have fallen.  There was a time when Georgetown DePaul would have been the highest rated hoops game of the week.

I was just talking to someone about the "what ever happened to..." schools.  What were the other programs that compared to Nebraska football, and Georgetown basketball was the first that came to mind.  I thought of the great DePaul teams in the 70's-80's as well.  USC baseball could be another, at least compared to the glory years when they were in the CWS as a regular.

Yeah, never underestimate the impact a great coach has on a program at any level.  Almost every program will suffer once that coach departs.  Wooden from UCLA, Bear from Alabama, Meyer from DePaul, Dr. Tom from Nebraska, Knight from Indiana, Miles from Nebraska...just to name a few.

I see what you did there. 👀
