AW-III IS BACK FOR HIS SENIOR SEASON (SOMEWHERE)

Recommended Posts

Dimes, I think you make a good point about having backups at White's position to blunt the loss if he does decide not to come back.  Granted, it's still a big loss, but of all the positions where it could occur, we seem pretty solid at his. So ...

Where I think I differ from your proposed lineup is as follows:

What I've read and heard suggests to me that Gill can be a combo guard who can play either backcourt position.  I expect him to do that.  I think we have a three-headed monster at the guard spot that incudes Gill, Watson and Webster.  I think any of them could start and we could have Watson-Gill, Watson-Webster, or Gill-Webster starting in the backcourt on any given night.

Minutes are harder to come by at the other three spots where we have lots of options and quality players who can't all start or get big minutes.  But I think this is where we see Roby and McVeigh.  White might see some time at the 2 (assuming he returns.)  You might call him a third guard in a 3-guard lineup.  But I think we'll pretty much see 2 of the 3 guards listed above pretty much at all times.  Let's just say if Roby comes in and plays guard with three other guys on the floor not named Watson, Webster or Gill, I will be surprised.

I think Horne could surprise some folks.  It'll be interesting to see what Jordy gets to do, especially if Jacobson plays more 4.

Note:  I get and I grant what Dean Smith has said about the 4 and 5 being basically the same spot.  But for clarity of discussion, it helps to designate them differently.  Besides, Jordy represents more of the throwback true 5 rather than a combo forward who plays the role of the "big."

I didn't actually say they were the same spot. I said people get caught up on labels. The 4 used to be a power forward and then those Europeans came over (and Kevin Garnett) and started shooting jump shots so we had to come up with a new label leading to the stretch 4. You have to get certain things done on the floor and if those things are happening you don't have to do it the way everybody expects it needs to be done. You need a post game but Mark Aguirre showed you primary post can be the 3 and your team can be very successful.

OK, thanks, I misunderstood you.  I was thinking back to Doc's offense with a switching high-low pair of bigs.  And, other than their individual skillsets, there wasn't a lot of difference between Jorge Brian and Brandon or between Ryan and Ade in terms of how they were utilized in those sets.  I'd assumed that's what you were describing.

Under Miles, we've never really had that guy who sets up in the low blocks and who you try to run the offense through.  There's been a tiny, little bit of post-entry passes in the Miles era.  We saw a handful in the Maryland game in the Big Ten tourney dumped in to Ed Morrow.  When you don't have an Aleks Maric on your roster, I suppose the labels of 4 and 5 carry less meaning.  That might change in the near future now that we have a truly big "Big."

I think it's possible that Jordy could be that next Aleks Maric for whom the label "5" or "center" actually means something.  And the role of a Michael Jacobson alongside a true 5 would be different than when we basically have two 4s doing the job of holding down the paint.

Is Andrew really going to force us to hit refresh all day and night?

FWIW, I read somewhere that he is announcing tonight.

Correct.  He said he will have his decision made this evening so not even sure it will be announced then or not

Hopefully he stays.  He's obviously not getting drafted this year, so the D-League is going to be his path to the NBA if he wants to go now.

Not sure what to make of his tenure at Nebraska if he doesn't come back to finish things out.

By all accounts is a great young man, a leader on and off the court.  But leaving after one pretty solid season, playing for a (record-wise at least) bad team...just seems like there is some unfinished business here.  Both individually and as a member of the program.

Will anybody remember him in 5 years if he leaves now?  He has an opportunity to really cement his legacy by finishing out his eligibility at Nebraska, potentially being part of something special this year and also taking on his Jayhawks.

This type of stuff matters more to the fans than to him, I'm sure.

That being said - the D-League isn't going anywhere.  Neither is Europe.  But this is his last chance to suit up in the Big Ten and become that POY contender and superstar that Nebraska desperately needs.  And improve his draft stock at the same time.
