I feel all kinds of emotions about this statement.  I'm not going to lie.

Not a good look IMO. Bryce doesn’t play the game as if winning is his primary goal.

I would wonder if these thoughts came from the same place that prompted him to tweet about NIL money

Could be. Just seems like he wanted to take a passive aggressive shot at his sons’ teammates under the guise of offering advice to future college recruits, while not actually providing any real advice. Never thought Coach McGowens would be a helicopter dad.

I actually follow Bobby McGowens on twitter. He does train/coach kids.  He makes the same sort of philosophical tweets that many in this line of work make.

So maybe he was subtweeting about the Huskers this particular time but there is a pretty good chance he wasn't at all.

Hopefully we can string something together in conference play. I know many on here seem done or close to done with the Hoiberg expirement.  I just don't see any good moving on after 3 seasons despite it being 3 terrible seasons. I'm hoping this year is just a case of biting off more than they can chew with a couple of guys who likely won't be here next year. One thing we can say is we have guys you can work with for the next few seasons. Haven't been able to say that in awhile.

If he was not tweeting about the Huskers, I owe him an apology. (poor timing though) If he was tweeting about Nebraska, he made a poor choice as a coach.

Going back to the game...

I do not want to under or overstate my simple observation.  I saw very little difference in how we played this game.  Effort was slightly better.  And we shot more effectively.   

We still have a lot more proving to do...and improving.

You didn't think the ball movement was better?

I hope McGowens' Dad's tweet is not a reference to what is going on at NU but the timing seems odd and the post is ironic given Bryce's recent play.   If you wanted to name a player on our team that does not appear to have winning as a primary goal I think Bryce would be the one named by a vast majority of people.    His lack of effort on the floor - particularly on defense - certainly rings of indifference toward winning basketball.    Difference between the way Bryce and Trey play in that regard is pretty striking.

On a somewhat related note - did anyone see Trey at the game last night?   I looked for her around the bench a few times and did not see him there.   Given he is not playing it might not be too unusual for him to have been excused given the time of year, but with Bryce playing you would have thought he would still be in town.

I had to go to a Christmas party so I gave my tickets away last night. I did watch the game on DVR. A friend of mine texted two video clips of the game. Both of the clips involved Bryce showing little to no effort on the defensive end. I wish I was technologically fluent because I would post them here. 

In the first clip, a guy blows by Bryce on the baseline with no resistance. Verge had to come help, leaving his man wide open for a 3. The shot was missed, but Bryce just stood there while his guy blocked him out and got an easy put back. In the second clip, Bryce played matador defense at the top of the key and the Burton kid got an easy layup. Hummel pointed out the poor defensive effort on tv. 

While I have been pretty hard on Bryce, I think he is clearly a talented kid and I think getting a 5 star to come to Lincoln was a significant development for the program. I'm glad we have him. Hoiberg said before the season that Bryce is not only an exceptional talent, but an exceptional person. The troubling thing to me is that he does not consistently play hard, especially on defense. I don't think he is soft, but at this point in his career, he often PLAYS soft. Perhaps it's a byproduct of being the most talented kid during his high school and AAU days. His dad's tweet about wanting your kid to go to a school where the teammates care primarily about winning was somewhat ironic. You would think a kid who cares primarily about winning would play with great effort all the time, on both sides of the floor. Objectively, Bryce hasn't yet demonstrated a commitment to playing with great effort on every possession. I hope he digs deep and learns to do so very soon.

The first clip began at 18:44 in the second half. The second was at 13:39 in the second half.

Those were the clips my friend sent me. I have a hard time understanding the mindset on those plays. If I'm out there on the floor, I have a responsibility to my team to do my job on the defensive end. Even if you didn't care about the team, I would think you would have a sense of personal pride not to be shown up. It's exactly what I was referring to about Bryce playing soft. I think your suggestion of applying the same standard of getting pulled for plays like this on the defensive end is the only way to deal with the problem. 

Since this is bag-on-Bryce (well-deserved, of course), it’s also worthwhile to note that, when he fouled out, we were up by 22.
