uneblinst's postgame chatter: vol 16; ed 7 - Cal State Fullerton

A workman like performance over a scrappy opponent.  CSF had some size inside and held their own on the boards. Max Jones looked like a very nice ball player not only scoring but as a distributor. We had a difficult time guarding him.

We settled for few too many threes but overall a decent performance.  The defensive intensity will need to be increased next Sunday. 7-0 is  nice start.

Never put them completely away. Seemed like they played sloppy at times and didn’t shut down Jones defensively. Going to run into this more in the B10.  Need to have answers for that problem.

Really would like to see Hoiberg get Rice, Diop, etc some minutes in these preseason games in patches. 

Glad to see we only missed one FT.  just sloopy play all around IMHO. The team looked disinterested in playing today.

Coleman was sloppy with the ball.  4 turnovers in 9 minutes is not a good ratio.  Lawrence 6 assists 0 turnovers.  Struggled shooting, though.

We played well enough to win; yet playing like that moving forward likely will end poorly.

I really like Jawan; but he has to learn that not all open 3's are good shots.  Just saying.

Rebounding was bad.  We gave up way to many offensive rebounds/2nd chance opportunities. 

Keisei was perfect from the floor and the line.  Yet, what the hell, get him the ball.  He did not get enough shots today.

Jones was a tough guard today.  I'm not sure we have that one guy that is a defensive stopper.  JL is solid but a taller player like Jones took him in the paint and scored consistently.  Williams and Gary had a tough time guarding his drive.  Like @1HuskerDad I wanted to see Rice and Diop but with point differentials taking into account, Hoiberg must of felt he couldn't play them.  I really hate that part of the power rankings.

All wins are good wins.

There was no energy in the building today, both from the team and the fans. I’m hopeful that in the future the crowd can provide that energy when the team is playing a little sluggish.

It seems to me that BW does not want to ever pass the ball to Keisei. There were a couple games early where Keisei was forcing it a lot, but today he was clearly looking to get others there shot and move the ball. Something has to get figured out here.

I’m a little bummed that Lloyd didn’t get to play. I’m curious if he has anything that he can offer the rotation, and he just needs his chance to crack into it, or if he is just not quite ready for this level yet. 
 

Jones for CSF can score. I really hope this injury doesn’t linger as I hope they can win a few games this year and help our SOS.

I thought I saw him back in the game after the injury...

I would rather learn lessons from a 13 point victory than a 21 point loss.

If we play well enough to win for the next three months or so, color me pink.

•-With the win, Nebraska improved to 7-0 for the fifth time in school history and the first time since the 1992-93 season

*-Nebraska’s seven-game win streak is the longest since an 11-game win streak during the 2010-11 season.

*-Nebraska finished the game 19-of-20 from the foul line, marking the second straight game NU shot at least 90 percent from the line (min. 10 att.). It is NU’s best performance (min. 10 att.) since going 12-of-12 at Minnesota on March 3, 2012. For 20 attempts or more, it is NU’s best foul shooting performance since at least the 2001-02 season.

*-Nebraska has scored 80-or-more points in each of the last four games and in six of seven games this season. NU has now won its last 13 games when scoring 80+ points.

*-It is Nebraska’s best foul shooting effort inside Pinnacle Bank Arena, breaking the mark of .923 (12 of 13) against Penn State on Feb. 13, 2016.

•-Nebraska hit a season-high 12 3-pointers in the win, the third time the Huskers have hit 10-or-more in a game this season.

•-Nebraska put five players (Rienk Mast, Brice Williams, Juwan Gary, Keisei Tominaga, Jamarques Lawrence) in double figures for the second time this season and the first since the season opener against Lindenwood.

*-Jamarques Lawrence dished out a season-high six assists without a turnover and finished with a season-high 11 points. He is the ninth Husker to post a double-figure game this season. Lawrence’s previous career high in assists was four, set three other times, and he 12 assists and no turnovers in the last three games.

*-Rienk Mast led NU with 19 points, as he is the first NU player to lead the team in scoring more than once this season.

*-Nebraska had 18 assists and nine turnovers, the third straight game posting a 2-to-1 or better assist-to-turnover ratio.

•-Keisei Tominaga tallied 17 points on just field goal attempts. Tominaga was 5-of-5 from the field (4-of-4 from 3) and was 4-of-4 from the foul line. HE also tied his career high with four rebounds. 

*-Juwan Gary had 13 points off the bench, as NU has had at least one double-figure scorer off the bench in all seven games.

Scored front row seats. Action is way different up close. CSF had some large guys, and Jones was a tough matchup. I didn’t think we rebounded with as much intensity of previous games, actually thought we moved the ball well. KT was amazing g w efficiency, but yes, some guys don’t look to be looking for him much. Thought KT actually didn’t force things today and passed it well. JL was good and Mast hitting three triples was nice. Coleman kinda hurt us in the second half and got pulled after the stretch he had of turnovers. All in all, 7-0. Entire week to rest and recover and prep for a tough 3 game stretch 

If Creighton gets as many second chances as Duquesne and Fullerton did, we won't win that game. 

Not much to glean from that game. Looked a little disinterested and low-energy today. Won’t be a problem in a week. 
 

7-0 before Creighton, like all of us said had to happen. Well done, fellas. 

Did what needed to be done to win. Can't expect great performance every game and 5th game in 14 days. Add in a possible Thanksgiving hangover and this type of performance could be expected. CSF seemed to make every open shot they took. On to the blue birds.

We can score.... but if we try and outscore Creighton, things will not go well for us.  I feel like we've lost a little bit of that intensity on D the past few games and that can't happen in the games coming up.

Also-- as noted, our intensity on the glass has also taken a tumble as of late.  Because of that, we've given up a lot of 2nd chance looks and that's really hurt us.

Overall though, we continue to do what we want to do and that's win by a pretty large margin.  These next three will tell us a lot about where we are at/think we're at.

Defensive intensity will be ramped up significantly next Sunday, Juwan Gary will make certain of that. He'll have the fellas ready to rock.

Today was a workmanlike effort, it was a bit of good, bad, and ugly at times. I've been very impressed with Lawrence, he's in command of this team. And Mast seems to understand how to gain matchup supremacy. I have no issue with Williams' ability to let the game come to him although I wish he'd be able to rebound better.

Tominaga is the #1 offensive weapon NU has and the rest of the squad needs to work better at getting him the ball when he cuts or fades to 3. It will take more time to gel, but they're 7-0. It can't be all that bad, thus far it's been mostly good. Clean up a few mistakes or misreads & they'll be in a position to compete with good programs.

Allick and Gary have been the 2 who exert a lot of effort to rebound better than most on the squad, now they need to teach the others to be tougher with the rock when it's up for grabs because they can't continue to lose the battle of the boards & be loose with the ball a la Coleman, or B1G teams will make them pay dearly.

For now, let's enjoy being undefeated, no one else in the state of Nebraska is. GBR

That also doesn’t look as daunting as it did before the season either, especially if we could get past CU who is probably the toughest of the 3.
