Agreed. After watching his highlights, I don't think he is someone that will be looking to share minutes 50/50 but who knows. He possesses the same skill set that Mast has (not sure on his passing skills) and is much more athletic. It would be nice to get him to play the 5 and Kyle to play the 4. And another big to rotate with them.

I don’t think he’s coming to replace Mast. I could totally be wrong, but I think Fred is planning on him coming to supplement Mast.

Many boats have two masts. Rienk is the mainsail, Morgan is the headsail.

Remember how mast wore down at the end of the year. He was around 29 mpg and by the end of the year he looked like a shell of himself. The knee scope probably played a role. But this guy played about 23 mpg at NDSU. I anticipate it'll be around 18-22 here, mostly in Mast relief. Having a shooting big on the floor at all times too.

Yeah, we started Allick and Mast together toward the end of the year. Mast and Morgan wouldn’t be a fun scout for other teams. 
 

I haven’t watched much film on him though, can he be the primary defender on opposing fours in our system?

It'll be interesting how Fred manages that. I still think they need that athletic big, see Payne or Kyle. And they still should take one.

Getting enough size that Gary doesn’t have to play the four would be ideal. So having three solid players other than him to rotate at the 4/5 would be great. About 27 minutes each.

And against certain teams, Gary can still play the 4. But him showing he can slide into that 3 spot opens up quite a few different lineup possibilities, which will be great next year.

I might be in the minority but I don’t think we want Payne. Doesn’t fit our system at all, can’t shoot from the field or FT line and doesn’t have post moves aside from being really big and athletic. Does that change with a different coaching staff? Maybe but I wouldn’t bank on it 

 

give me Morgan, Kyle, and a freshman or sophomore big then we got our work cut out for us at the guard position yet

I guess I see Kyle and Payne in the same light. Athletic big that can defend. Very similar skill set/play style. Either works for me.

I think Kyle can play the 4 defensively and offensively as long as our 5 can shoot.  I have zero faith in Payne at the 4 defensively and well I don’t think much of his offensive game either lol.  Maybe I’m viewing Kyle incorrectly though.

Well payne played a lot of 4 at Minnesota opposite Garcia, so as long as the big opposite him can shoot, like Mast, I see him the same. I do like Kyle more, mostly because he's actually visited, but I think payne and him are interchangeable.

Kinda feel like Kyle might be a long shot. Been pretty quiet after visit and sounds like he is gonna take his time…  hopefully I’m wrong

We have 6 open scholarships and ran multiple bigs last year. Need doubles on the Mast though triples is best, makes it safe.

Payne is really just an interior defender. Kyle has more wiggle, would be much more versatile defensively so you could easily play him next to Mast.  That said, I’d take either or both.

Agree, don’t see Payne moving his feet on the perimeter like Kyle can but my biggest reason for not caring about Payne is attitude. Seems like a bit of a head case and might not fit the culture. JMO, no real info on him though.

Always been a fan of Payne game aside from him not being a very good passer out of doubles.
