uneblinst's postgame chatter: vol 16; ed 18 - Rutgers

Recommended Posts

Let's flip the script of the thread.

This game is over. Nothing more we can do about that. Now we get to see whether this team has what it takes to be resilient and find ways to win late in the season, shorthanded and tired. Every team goes through injuries and fatigue. Some rise to the top, some don't.

Next game is Saturday. It's time to show the committee what kind of team we are.

The same thing we did against Minnesota, we did against Rutgers.  We let both teams pressure us and wilted.   Part of it is having a combo guard try to learn point.  Part of it is getting pushed around for rebound after rebound.   Losing Gary when we did was a huge blow.  Overall, defense was decent until we had to rebound.  Just needed 1 or 2 rebounds.

One beef with the refs.  They rightfully called 3 seconds on Mast.  In the 2nd half, 11 for Rutgers was in the lane for 12 seconds.  He went in the lane with 16:10, never leaves the lane, catches the ball with 16:01, dribbles 2 times, and finally shoots the ball with 15:58.  There was a make-up call by not calling a foul on Gary in that same sequence.

Peeking at the B1G standing added to my frustration. We are two awful road game halves from being in 2nd place with the tiebreaker over Purdue. Sometimes I think why do I care so much just to see my fanatic heart ripped out every season. On the flip side, if I stop watching and caring, we probably become a blue blood, and I would suffer the misery of not getting to enjoy their success. Just a lose-lose it feels like sometimes. I'm guessing that others feel the same! The life of a Husker Hoops fan.

Last year, we were not a great road (2-9 prior to our last 2 games) team, but won our last 2.  The year before that, we were 0 - 8, and won our last 3.  2 against ranked teams.

We protect home court and get hot on the road, we can still make something of this season.   We have 2 absolute must wins, and then it's time to start playing better on the road.  It starts with defense, and not having scoring droughts.

Welp. Kudos to Rutgers for playing tough. Piscataway is a hard place to win, but better team wanted to win last night.

-Need to hear something on Gary soon. If he's back this year, and that's a big if, allick and potentially diop or Rice need to step up. Brice will have to play down to the 4 some too.

-easily the worst game I have seen from mast this season. Clif is a good big, but he took the fight to mast.

-allick was pretty productive, and he'll need to continue that carrying forward, as he's the guy I pencil in as a starter.

-j law got easy looks early, but needs to knock down one of his 3s. We've seen him be a good shooter, so it is likely a confidence thing. Him figuring it out in Gary's absence would be a massive development.

Nothing really good from that game. Road bug bites them again. Fight on the glass over the next few days in practice and be ready for a MASSIVE game vs NW on Saturday.

Would be nice to have Blaise in games like this

With Gary's potential long term injury, him providing something became a bit more important than the past.

I don't feel great about a guy getting his first minutes of the season halfway through big ten play, but that's the world we live in

I have no inside news and can find nothing this morning, but Gary's injury looked like a typical Achilles tear. I doubt he will be back and we should hear the definitive diagnosis this morning. I hope I am wrong.

That's what a lot are saying. I don't know if I saw anything pop when he was running, but I'm not a doctor nor will I pretend to be one lol.

I'm working under the assumption he won't be back.

Game was so intense that one of my boys got irrationally angry and the other one dropped a curse word after that basket Rutgers got at the end of the half with .1 on the shot clock.

My kids, who don't normally watch games, where watching this one with me.

My wife said I've never seen you like this after a loss.

I wasn't angry, I was just sad.

At what point does Fred tell Blaise to man up and play?  What's it going to hurt at this point?  This isn't going to be the only game we struggle to rebound in going forward, especially if Gary is out.  I mean just look at Mast and Allick, they took a physical beating tonight (Allick's face and Mast's cuts/scatches on his arms).  Rutgers are a physical team and just mug the heck out of you.  It would be nice to have another big guy to put in there to help them out.  Diop isn't ready to be that guy either.

Time to move on though.  Hopefully we can get a win on Saturday and get things turned back around.  GBR!
