Notes from UNL

  • Keisei Tominaga scored a career-high 30 points. His performance was the first 30-point game by a Husker since Alonzo Verge had 31 points against Michigan on Dec. 7, 2021. It marked his third 20-point game of the season. Before today, Tominaga’s career high was 23, most recently against Boston College on Nov. 30.
  • Tominaga’s five 3-pointers was a season high for any Husker. Tominaga was also the last Husker to have five 3-pointers in a game at NC State on Dec. 1, 2021
  • The Huskers shot 53 percent from the field in the win, marking the Huskers’ eighth game this season shooting 50 percent or better. The field goal percentage was NU’s second-highest mark in Big Ten play this season.
  • Nebraska committed a season-low seven turnovers in the game. The Huskers’ previous low had been nine turnovers on three separate occasions, most recently at Penn State on Jan. 21.
  • Jamarques Lawrence narrowly missed his first career double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. His 11 points were one shy of his career high, while his nine rebounds were a career high. Lawrence also had a career-high two steals and matched his career high with three assists.
  • Derrick Walker filled up the stat line with nine points, six rebounds and a career-high seven assists. He also had seven assists at Minnesota on Jan. 7.
  • The win marked NU’s first home win over Penn State since 2019. NU had lost the last two matchups in Lincoln.
  • Nebraska’s 72 points was its highest total since scoring 81 in an overtime win at Minnesota on Jan. 7
  • Nebraska held Penn State to 40 percent shooting, the ninth time NU has held an opponent to 40 percent or less from the field
  • Nebraska out-rebounded Penn State, 33-32, and is 4-0 in conference games when out-rebounding its opponent.
  • Nebraska never trailed in the game and led for all but 1:16. For the first time this season, the Huskers never trailed in a Big Ten game. Overall, it was the fourth time Nebraska has not trailed in a game this season.
  • The Huskers shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) in the first half, their best shooting performance in the first half of a Big Ten game this season.
  • In the first half, Tominaga scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. He then scored 16 points in the second half on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-6 from the 3-point line.
  • Seth Lundy made eight 3-pointers for the Nittany Lions. The eight treys were a Penn State program record and tied the Pinnacle Bank Arena record. Minnesota’s Malik Smith in 2014 and Wisconsin’s Brad Davison in 2020 also knocked down eight in Lincoln.

If Fred truly loved the fans, he would've allowed Lundy to get one more trey to erase the previous record holders.

What a nice walk to PBA today. Sun was shining, temps feeling like close to 60 degrees. Reminded me of a March Sunday back in 2014 against Wisconsin. Much different stakes and scenario, of course.
This was a very fun game to be at. Entertaining, good basketball. Coach Rhule was there. Followed Tominaga on Twitter during the game.

My funniest moment, one I can’t believe happened.
During a gear grab, a t shirt is launched and smokes a lady who wasn’t paying attention in the face. That was kind of funny. Gal next to her was concerned and tending to her, when all of a sudden, the gal next to her who was providing “care” gets smoked by another t-shirt. She immediately stands up and yells down towards the court. Grabs her friend (the original one who got smoked) and they head out of there, to complain.
Sadly, after that, all t shirt gear grabs were just gals throwing them 8 rows up in the 100 section. Will always remember this.

Interesting comments from Rapheal Davis after the game. (I did text to speech) “This is the day that made me realize why they call him the Japanese Steph Curry because it goes beyond His shooting ability from the logo - he’s gonna make shots all over the floor but his ability to move without the basketball is big time, his game play is better live - guys not really seeing him, the cuts-he found ways to affect the game outside of the three-trying to get him looks and to 30 points in this game. And I don’t think Penn State respected him. I’ve been in this league, Ive played against guys in this league. And Tominaga doesn’t pass the look test for some guys and they treated him like a scrub and he made them pay every single play down the court”

Fred did an excellent job managing our rotation this game.  It’s almost like he has figured out who our reliable players are.  Lawrence really has taken a big step forward.  Sam Hoiberg is such a breath of fresh air…the kid is a very smart player.  Walker is still struggling a bit but we need the big guy.

I thought Fred did an excellent job of minimizing the negative plays when Wilcher and Breidenbach were in.  As soon as the bad plays started happening the core guys came back in.  Really one of the best jobs managing the game that Fred had done here.

This.  I thought the first half looked like a team that could go .500 down the stretch.

Big win, good win, burst State Penn's bubble potentially

If the Big Ten really thought Penn State was a bubble team or really cared about Penn State basketball, they would have sent McJunkins or Pfeiffer or Lamont or one of their other hatchet men to put a thumb on the scale.  Instead it was a pretty well officiated game for the most part (at least in my opinion).

Part of the effort to speed up concessions is that there are people with rolling coolers set up where you can just buy a beer.

Yesterday in the 2nd half I hear "ice cold beer" behind me as the guy with the cooler is rolling through the concourse. Every day I feel better about the Trev Alberts era.

You mean every time you have an ice cold one?

Yeah, I have no clue what to say about the dispersal of shirts.  About 10% of the crowd (and very few kids) get an opportunity to grab the shirts.  Lol, you have adults jumping over others for a shirt that is too small for them...I actually saw a dude walking out of the arena carrying three of them.  Maybe he gives them out as gifts.
