  2. Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-3) vs Boston College Eagles (5-2) ** B1G-ACC CHALLENGE ** Date: Wednesday Nov 30, 2022 Time: 8:15 pm Arena: PBA Broadcast: ESPNU Boston College Info Head Coach: Earl Grant Location: Chestnut Hill, MA Conference: ACC Nickname: Eagles Mascot: Baldwin the Eagle Last time out: Beat Rhode IslandOpening Line: Nebraska by 6.5 Famous Alumni: Jared Dudley, Dana Barros Other: The last (and only) time Nebraska played Boston College was 8:15 at the PBA on a Wednesday night on ESPNU (11/29/2017) Former Nebraska assistant Jim Molinari is an assistant for Boston College This is the last year of the B1G-ACC Challenge after 24 seasons as ESPN will no longer have the rights to air Big 10 games. Nebraska currently stands at 5-6 all-time. KenPom Analysis: Appears to be a dribble drive team that doesn't take (or make) many 3s. Thus far they're winning games with defense and their ability to turn teams over surely could bother Nebraska. Player to watch: Makai Ashton-Langford Expect the Senior Langford to spearhead any ball pressure on Nebraska. Leads the team in scoring and assist, poor outside shooter KenPom most used lineup PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 3 Jaeden Zackery 6-2 215 So 11 Makai Ashton-Langford 6-3 180 Sr 5 DeMarr Langford 6-5 220 Jr 24 CJ Penha 6-7 230 Sr 1 TJ Bickerstaff 6-9 220 Sr 12.0 2 3 Jaeden Zackery 6-2 215 So 11 Makai Ashton-Langford 6-3 180 Sr 45 Mason Madsen 6-4 195 Jr 24 CJ Penha 6-7 230 Sr 1 TJ Bickerstaff 6-9 220 Sr 10.5 Others to watch Demar Langford is MAL's brother. Another physical defender who can't shoot from outside Jaden Zackery was on of BC's best outside shooting threats last year, hitting 48%. For whatever reason he's been taking the ball to the hole more. Rarely leaves the court Div II grad transfer CJ Penha is their most reliable bucket in the paint at the 4. Bickerstaff is a rim defender and rebounder, unreliable touch. 6'10" Freshman Armani Mighty plays a few situational minutes per night but is generally unreliable. Cincinnati transfer Mason Madsen is a willing defender who leads the team in 3pt attempts, hitting 32.3% on the year Backup 4 man Devin McGlockton functions as the small ball 5. Good shooting glue guy. Freshamn backup PG Chas Kelley has struggled this year with his shot and turnovers. UNL Game Notes Probable starters for Nebraska 5 Sam Griesel G 6-7 25 Emmanuel Bandoumel G 6-4 0 C.J. Defensively Keisei had 7 deflections and the team forced 17 turnovers The Skinny: Earl Grant is a GRIT guy. He cut his teeth as an assistant under Gregg Marshall and both Winthrop and Wichita St as well as Brad Brownell, two know GRIT coaches. Grant's mantra is "Gritty not Pretty" The one quote I saw from him was two sentences long and both sentences contained the word grit. Would not be surprised if his Halloween costume was Gritty, the Flyers mascot. You're not going to out-grit this man. Thus, expect a hard nosed Eagles defense that will try and jump passing lanes all night and hope that Nebraska can limit the number of pick-6 passes they've been carelessly throwing lately. BC has been so poor at shooting from outside and Nebraska has been so good at defending without fouling it seems like the Eagles will struggle to score 60 in this game. What is the limit on Derrick Walker turning into Royce White in Orlando? Last year he transformed from a 40% FT shooter into a 72% shooter while becoming one of the NCAA's most accurate shooters. Now he's bringing the ball up the court and initiating the offense. Nebraska is on to something here. How much will it make a difference in the W-L record? I think Nebraska matches up well with Boston College but expect the grit guys to make you sweat out the result. Prediction: Nebraska 68 - Boston College 61 View full article

  4. Generally yes, but this year, at DS, not so much. This is where the loss of Akana hurts us. We lost a server and defensive specialist in Knuckles. Hames can serve and dig well. Evans can't play front row at all. He's trying to fill with an outside hitter playing back row (Batenhorst), and doesn't bode well against elite 8 and better competition. He's missing extra back row chair parts this year.

  6. One thing that helps cook is that he's stockpiled a lot of extra chair parts. He'll need to find the right one, and make the repairs, but he at least has the chair parts on hand.

  7. We lost one of the best back line players in the country due to injury. Overcoming an injury such as that, late in the season, would make a final four run remarkable in my book. But that is solely my humble opinion that may, or may not be shared by others. Team continuity and chemistry can be fickle. I compare it to a simple chair. With all four legs it is strong and stable. Lose one of the legs and it becomes much less stable and unless it is is properly manipulated and stabilized, will fail. Cook and his staff are the best of the best. If anyone can find the stabilization, it is that bunch. But again, it would be a remarkable feat.

Jasen Green redshirting Fr. Isaac Traudt redshirting Active in-state guys we said "eff it" out of HS: Sr. Baylor Schierman, 12.0/9.3, 44% from 3 Sr. Sam Griesel, 10.9/5.1/4.4 Sr. John Tonje, 15.1/6.3, 38% from 3 Sr. Josia Allick, 9.5/8.0 in 29 min/game Jr. Charlie Easley, 9.0/2.9/1.3, 42% from 3 So. Frankie Fidler, 11.0/5.5 in 31 min/game Fr. Luke Jungers, 7.3/3.1, 31% from 3 Not sure where to list the Arops or Donovan Williams because we didn't really blow them off coming out of HS. I'm including Easley in this group, though, because he was a walk-on who is now a scholarship D1 player. And we didn't offer him. But, anyway, who's having more of an impact: The guys we whiffed on or the guys we spurned?

  12. If they get to 18 or 20 teams, basketball scheduling and maintaining relatively balanced schedule strength becomes pretty easy - play everyone 1x and play your "rival" 2x. That gives you 18 or 20 conf games. For a program like NU, dropping back to 18 conf games would be nice - gives you the option of having a couple of non-con cupcakes while you're building the program vs playing Purdue and USC a 2nd time. However, I don't think TV will allow them to go below 20 conference games. Volleyball can follow a model like basketball - easier to have equally balanced schedules with more teams since they play 20 conf matches now. Football becomes trickier the bigger they go for maintaining balance - you almost have to go to 4 pods with 2 rotating pods in each division - not sure they'll do that though. Seems to be a lot of push for no divisions and random schedules. There's no way to maintain balanced schedules that way, unfortunately, but they can have the big names play more often for TV ratings. Baseball plays just 24 conf games out of 56 total, so they could use more conf games. Competitive balance is really out of whack now when you don't play 1/3 of the conf teams each year and there's no divisions. If they have some warm weather sites (USC, UCLA, etc) they can use in Feb and early March, though, they can get really creative with weekend pods and more conference games and find a far better competitive balance than they have now, something like they did during the Covid year. It's going to be very sport specific. Hopefully competitive balance gets most of the consideration, but TV dollars will definitely play a role.

  14. I still cannot believe they didn't call a foul on a Bryce game winning attempt in one of the overtimes last year.

  15. After the games on Tuesday... ACC 5, Big Ten 3 Monday: Va Tech takes down Minny by 10. Pitt over NW in Evanston by 29!!! Tuesday: Maryland over Louisville by 25. Louisville is bad this year. Clemson beats Penn State in 2 OT's. Quite the game. Illinois over the Cuse by 29!!! Iowa takes care of Ga Tech by 16. Wake Forest beats Wisco at Wisco. Chucky with an ill advised 3 at the end. 78-75 final Virginia wins at Michigan 70-68. Quite the drama in this one as VA missed some FTs and it appeared there may have been a foul on the final 3 attempt for Michigan. Wednesday: Boston College @ Nebraska Purdue @ Florida State (ouch) Ohio St @ Duke Rutgers @ Miami UNC @ Indiana Michigan St @ Notre Dame

  18. We had a couple of English guys standing next to us for the game today and they both agreed the US had a legitimate chance to beat the Dutch on Saturday so take that for what it’s worth. Also for what it’s worth I agree with them.

  21. Just looking at the two groups, it makes me think maybe you need to be patient with a kid and give him time to develop. Speaking of which, Kevin Cross is currently averaging 16.1 ppg, 6.0 bds, 4.1 assists while hitting 84.8% of his FTs and 55.3% from the floor. Now how deflated do you feel?

    Inevitable?

Absolutely. Frost getting fired was a completely different situation. Football was in a downward spiral with some decent talent on the team with the potential that the season could be salvaged under new leadership. Trev specifically said after he fired frost that part of the reason to do it so early was to give the team and players a chance this year. On the basketball side we have a under talented team that appears to be battling their butts off to get anything they can out of the year. Hitting reset and canning our coach doesn’t give the players a better shot to win, it probably gives them a much worse shot.

  25. OMG yes. Great point. We almost turned the entire roster over, so it's not inconceivable that he could have built a roster in year 1 much like the one we're fielding this year. As much as any of us might criticize Keisei for being a defensive liability, is there anyone who would prefer Matty Kavas? Yeah, me neither. I wouldn't even take Jervay over Keisei. And I would definitely take Sam Griesel over Cam Mack even though Cam was more of a natural PG. The biggest apples-to-oranges critique is that Banton would have been immediately eligible if he was entering the program now. But, I mean, generally speaking, this is more like what I would have thought we'd be building on.
