    What's up everyone?

My name is Patrick Howard, i'm new to the board! I used to cover the basketball team for Fox Sports/BigRedReport.com and now I just write an occasional Big Ten article for MajorOnions.com. Just wanted to introduce myself and I look forward to talking Nebraska basketball with you all, what a season it has been!

  2. If we continue to say this before every game, we increase our odds of getting it right at some point.

  3. When Coach Miles is down there on the floor motioning his arms for everyone to stand, damn near everyone in the whole arena should be on their feet. And, if they're unable to stand, they shouldn't have a problem with those who are standing. This is a basketball game, not a performance of the London Philharmonic. And the Husker Power chant has been around for a long time. Using it at the beginning of games in place of "Who Cares? You suck!" is brilliant: A) It gets the crowd loud and energized from the get-go with a cheer they know; and B ) It's certainly more sportsmanlike than what the red zone had been doing. Period. End of discussion.

    I feel bad for Iowa...

They are really going backwards. I think Indiana will be tough no matter what they do prior to playing us. Made a couple of tweets about Iowa This account just followed me. You can't make that up

  6. The "too" on "liking the discussion over here too" implies there's discussion over there. They must keep it hidden.

  8. Just tweeted: Robin Washut (@RobinWashut) 2/28/14, 1:19 PM Tim Miles was asked his thoughts on the Husker Power chant during opponent intros. "I love it." So it is written, so it shall be.

  11. Brought my grandma to the game and she said during the Husker Power chant that she thought it was rude. I looked at her and said "That's the point". She shook her head and smiled and said " I guess you're right". It's sometimes hard to change habits especially in the older generations. It will come. (NO my grandmother is not Jean)

  13. If the tip is good...we're safely IN the dance, and we're 1/2 game ahead of Ohio State for 4th in the league. We'd be talking about the possibility of playing Wisconsin for third. Just the tip.

  14. Iowa hadn't lost back-to-back all year, and now the Hawkeyes have lost back-to-back-to-back. That's FRAN-tastic!

  17. ... we are guaranteed to finish no worse than tied for 6th place in conference. And, for at least a moment, we'd be in a tie with Ohio State for 4th place. Think about that a second. None of the 6 teams below us can jump over us. They all have at least 9 losses in conference. They cannot get beyond 9 wins. And, by winning tomorrow, we reach 9 wins and are assured of no worse than a .500 finish in conference play. When was the last time we won at least half of our conference games and finished in the top half of the conference standings? Long damn time ago.

  23. I think that tomorrow is a huge bounce back game. Shavon, Terran, Walt and Ray all struggled to find their shots against Illinois. I dont see that happening two games in a row.

  28. Ronnie was a good kid. He used to live with Curtis Moore, Stan Cloudy and Anthony White in a house on F street and was always cheerful, polite and uninvolved in team controversy. I remember sitting behind the basket in Manhattan and watching him beat K State with a last second shot. Tragic that he passed so young but he did have a long pro career, successful marriage and contributed in a positive way to society. Not a bad legacy for anyone. RIP

  35. Says Huskers need 3 wins, however they can find them, , including Big Ten tourney. Says Minnesota needs 2 more wins against teams ahead of them in the standings, including Big Ten tourney.

  36. You're right. I made a pretty blanket statement. If it's physically hard for people to stand for an entire game or if they need to leave early because of that, it's not those fans I was meaning to lump into a group....the kind of fans that have been coming to games even in the darkest days of Husker basketball. I think I get overly defensive of people getting chastised for not standing because my mother went to Nebraska basketball games for 25 years and towards the end, she couldn't stand for the entire game....but dang it, she went...when many others stayed home. My mom is no longer with us, but she and My dad went to every game (even the athlete's in action games) for 25 years....They saw some good teams, but saw some not so good teams, too. Now, my parents knew their strengths and weaknesses and managed to get seats where nobody could stand in front of them (they were in the front row next to rail above a gate....but not all fans are able to do that...My folks stayed in the C section to keep those seats even though they could have moved into the B section, because they knew their limitations. I go to football and basketball games...I stand when others stand, I sit when others sit...but I tell you when two people are standing...and the only twopeople in the entire section are standing....I really don't get it....(to me they are just being inconsiderate to others rather than supporting the team)

  41. Can we organize this for the Wisconsin game? You think this wouldn't fire up the team? Holy smokes!

  42. So, our response to Jean, summarized: Yes, it's rude. Duh. That's kinda the point. You can't have a hostile environment without a little hostile. At least we got rid of the part where we yelled that the other team's players suck. Which is less sportsmanlike? Cheering for YOUR team during the other team's introductions? Or booing the other team during their introductions? You apparently didn't take issue with yelling that the other team's players suck. Why complain now? How is this even remotely worse? I've said it before but I'll say it again. This is the BEST tradition we've EVER come up with that is uniquely ours. It gets the crowd into it and it gets the noise level up and it is AWESOME. It's the only thing we do that fans from other teams might watch on youtube and say, "That's cool; we should do something like that."

  43. BTW, I'd be completely behind getting rid of the "Husker Power" chant if we replaced it with "Us Always"
    1 point
  44. It's possible to consider the timing of the chant to be rude. Before the chant from the student section was typically "Who cares, you suck" The student section is going to chant something (if they're not turned away or reading papers). Why not have it be positive? Why not have it be Pro-Huskers? Why not everyone get behind it?

  45. True confession: while yelling "Power" over-and-over at the top-of-my lungs and with gusto during player introductions, I thought, "This is kinda rude." However, it seems that fans in a sporting event are allowed, as a matter of social decorum, certain behaviors that would be taboo in an office environment or other social setting. For example, cheering over someone else's mistake would, ordinarily, be frowned upon--but cheering for an un-forced turnover is perfectly fine. Yelling at a judge might land someone in jail, but yelling at a ref--standard behavior. The difficulty for Husker fans is the long-cultivated reputation for being gracious hosts to opponents at Husker events. Hence, angst about such things among some fans (yours truly included) is unavoidable, even while we all still clap for an injured player leaving the floor or treat fans clad in opposing colors graciously as they leave the arena.

  46. This is the fan who tells you that you're cheering too loud. This is the fan that leaves with 4 minutes to go when the game is tied. This is the fan that will only stand when a t-shirt is being fired into the crowd. This is also probably a fan that donates $1000s of Dollars to the athletic department, so we can Hire Quality coaches like Tim miles, build practice facilities, and buy out coaches like Doc which all allow us to have something to cheer for.So, it takes all kinds...if we only had people that just bought a ticket and yelled loud....we probably won't end up with much to cheer about. Hello Jean.
