PA announcer

Am I the only one who is annoyed and embarrassed by the PA announcer? I know we got a new guy last year but didn't figure he would make the trip to the new diggs.

I didn't seem to notice so I'll have to pay more attention tomorrow. I did hear a couple times where he trailed on and on and on at the end of a players name.

He is horrible.  I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that he has essentially no experience doing this.  Sounds like he should be announcing the title of an infomercial product instead of a player name.  

 

Would love if they had an NBA-style guy who was exciting/intimidating with his voice.  This guy sounds like my dad trying to announce names.

He is horrible.  I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that he has essentially no experience doing this.  Sounds like he should be announcing the title of an infomercial product instead of a player name.

He's been doing the state basketball games at Devaney for years!

I hate when he says "now let's play Big Red Basketball" right before the tipoff.  I was hoping that would end and die at Devaney but sounds like it's made it way to PBA as well.

That's kinda his schtick.  He's done if for years at state.

Most times at the Devaney it sounded like one of the parents from the Peanuts cartoons.

Before Miles got here, I think they had Pat Combs from the old "Combs and Baylor" radio show doing the announcing.  He has good pipes.

 

Before that, I'm not sure who it was.  But then, quite a few years back, probably during the Collier era, we had a guy who was soooo good he got hired away to do NASCAR announcing or something like that.

 

Anyone remember that?

Combs and Baylor were awesome!

 

John came to my high school last month to introduce his ACT Test Prep class.

 

He's a bit of a spaz, but I always loved listening to those guys.  I called in to that show a few times.

Yes, he is awful.  His act works fine at a state basketball game but should be no where near Husker basketball.  Yet another example of Boehm's inability to maximize the aspects of the program that are 100% in our control.

The Drake announcer was reprimanded by the league for doing that crap and it stopped.  If you guys don't like it you could just make a call on behalf of Northwestern to the B1G and see what happens.

I'm pretty sure his name is Doc Weineger or something like that.  At state tourneys he always would say, "now lets play state tournament basketball."

I liked at the open house dunk exhibition where Pitchford kept doing dunks.  After each dunk PA guy would give out a WAL-TER PITCHFOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORD.  Just kept saying it and nothing else.  No adjective of the dunk, just kept the name on repeat.

 

I think he has zero personality, and his delivery is awful.  We can get somebody much better.

And I will go on record that I hate the Let's Play BIG RED BASKETBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL thing too.  I think this guy just likes hearing the sound of his own voice.  PA announcer's job is to get the crowd into it, not give himself a stiffy from hearing his own voice.

I just always think his pronunciation of Benny's name makes him sound French. It's how French people asked me if I knew "Toh-nee Park-AIR" when they found out I was American. And the mental image of Benny in a beret is priceless. So I guess there's that, although I don't know if it's points in favor of the PA guy or against.
