Look what Drake has done with an entirely new roster and numerous Division II transfers.  Kids coming up a level have much to prove.  It may not always be true but we have had more success with players coming from lower levels.

Drake hasn't had to endure the nightly fist fight at the Big Ten level of competition, either. If they progress deep into the NCAA tourney then I'll give them their due props.

Hey Cazzie, I did a poor job of responding to the idea of your original comment. I actually do agree with what you're saying. The point that I was trying to make is that with the Big Ten level of competition you have to recruit Big Ten levels of ability and athleticism. Some lower level guys have those abilities, but the competition to recruit them is pretty darn fierce.

#1 for me is we HAVE to get more athletic.

#2 Point Guard that can create shots for others (think Wooster could do this) AND actually be a threat to put the ball in the basket (Wooster not so good at this).

#3  Combo Guard and Wing that can put the ball in the basket regularly when left open.

#4 Back up big to give Mast some relief.

#5 Rim protector but also a 4 that can score on a regular basis.

Hard to know how many to place on this list not knowing who (if any) Fred tells they need to move on. I am hoping that Mast, the two Freshman and Berke and Essegian stick around.

My wish list last portal season wasn't realistic. Who knows who will enter the portal and who won't, but a somewhat more realistic wish list that might check some of your boxes could include...

#2 on your list - Josh Dix. But he would likely have much better $ offers. Can be a primary ball handler, very good vision. Elite shooter. From Council Bluffs.

#3 - Jamarques Lawrence. Some smoke is going around. No idea if there's fire.

#4/5 - Bangot Dak. Has a relationship with the coaching staff. Has developed well at Colorado. Could play the Allick role at a higher level.

A Mast/Berke/Dak (or similar) frontcourt rotation (with Frager in a swing 3/4 role) would have the potential to be > the '24 frontcourt, which was >>> the

             '25 frontcourt.

That would be a good start.

I will be in the minority,  but I hope Gavin stays.  He looked like a deer in the headlights this year.  I am hoping another year in Fred's system will get him to be the player he was suppose to be coming out of high school.

My philosophy would be to take guys with multiple years of eligibility remaining.  The ones with one year remaining seem to struggle.

I agree. College basketball teams will have 15 scholarships available going forward, right? Hoiberg (like Miles and many/most other coaches) preferred not to fill all 13 scholarships anyway, for good reasons. Gavin doesn't seem to be a bad locker room guy. He had good body language on the bench and his teammates speak glowingly of him. Maybe he wants to transfer down to a lower level at this point. But if not, might as well keep him.

I'm indifferent. If they're able to clear room on their roster via walk ons moving on, I'd be fine with it. Right now they have 4 spots available going into next year though with the new 15 roster limit rule. Good chance Burt isn't here, and wouldn't shock me on Jacobsen either. That would put us at 6, and I'd be fine with that

Also keep in mind that the transfer portal is a long period of time. First may not always be best.

Reink, Brice, and Juwan were all mid to late April commits. So strap in.

It's not quite as frantic as football, where the spring semester is starting up soon after the season and players need to get enrolled.

The numbers make him look like a 6'2" Frankie Fidler as he can get to the line, seems like he can pass, and your guess is as good as mine if his 3pt shot is going in.

Wouldn't surprise me if Purdue went after him. Film kind of reminds of Lance Jones, who took some pressure off Braden Smith last year.
