We've bled some spots since the last KenPom update, primarily due to several of our non-con opponents hitting a rough stretch lately and also a larger than expected loss to Kansas State.  Otherwise everything is kind of going as expected.  Ken has us with 6 conference wins right now.  If we can somehow figure out a way to flip two of the losses to wins I gotta think we have a puncher's chance at some post season action.  Time will tell.  Would sure like to start by flipping that Iowa game to a win.  Other than that there isn't a lot of change going on.  Maryland, Florida State and Boston College also have slipped some over the last week.

Once again, let's give it up for Tim Miles and the San Jose Spartans!  They started off the week with a one point loss at Pacific, a game they led pretty much the whole way until the last 90 seconds but just couldn't hang on in the end.  They did finish up the week with a convincing home win against Cal Poly, however.  The Spartans wrapped up non-con with a 9-4 record and are up to #158.  Starting to get serious year two Coach Miles vibes around here.  (Ironically, Ken predicts San Jose to get 6 conference wins as well.  Might be interesting to see if either of us can beat those expectations.)

Okay, that's today's KenPom update.  Here we go!

Tim Miles picked up a nice win tonight down at SJSU.  Previously once beaten UNLV goes down.

SJSU cracked the top 150 in KP.

Coach is doing a lot of things right out in San Jose.  Love to see it!

The most Nebraska Basketball thing ever would be in a couple of years, after Ben Johnson proceeds to fail at Minnesota (he's headed that direction despite how things started last season), the Gophers finally hire Tim Miles who goes onto propel Minnesota regularly into the top half of the league and stomp our asses with regularity.

And all the people on this board who rejoiced when Miles was fired and pretended that lack of AD support had nothing to do with our lack of success (in recruiting especially) will be out here saying, well, he just wasn't ready yet as a coach when he was at Nebraska, that he needed to go cut his teeth at a place like San Jose before heading to a P5 program.

I mean, I can just see this happening. Two years. Maybe three.

It was both satisfying and disheartening to highlight the Iowa name and slide it down as far as I did this morning.  Good win but we still have a ways to go to be able to compete at the top of this league.  The good news I see us being able to compete well against the teams in the 40's and below and there seems to be a growing number of those in the Big Ten.

Rutgers is surging towards the top of the league due largely to an impressive win at home over Indiana and a 1 point loss at Ohio State.  Can they keep it up?  Illinois has dropped precipitously since their huge loss to Dennis Gates' Mizzou team.  (great hire for Missouri by the way).

So, we finish up 2022 with an 8-6 record.  We'll need to get 8 more wins for NIT eligibility; can we get them?  KenPom says there are 6 games left where we are favored by or an underdog by one or two points.  We need to win all of those toss-ups and take care of business in both Minnesota games to get there.  Tall task, but not impossible.  I would have laughed in your face two months ago if you had told me we would end December with a puncher's chance at the post season.  Currently KenPom has predicted a 15-16 (8-12) regular season finish for us.

Tim Miles update:

The Spartans get a nice win this week over UNLV at home to move up to #144.  Big road game for him and his guys this weekend at Colorado State.  I'm sure this one has some extra meaning for coach.  Good luck coach and beat those Rams!

Since we're updating on teams not on our schedule, let me just add that North Texas is 10-3, kenpom #57, and they beat UNO by 30.

Eh, there's really no difference between the teams at the top of the league and the teams near the bottom. The order will change quite a bit as the year goes on. Wouldn't be a surprise at all if Northwestern beat Ohio State this weekend. Purdue and Minnesota seem to be the only outliers thus far. Even then, we definitely competed with Purdue and Minnesota could very well beat us.

Totally agree. Not a team in the league we can not beat on a given night (or lose to as well). It’ll be a roller coaster ride

Well i would think if there was ever a time to beat MSU at the breslin center it would be right before they play Michigan. Things are set up nicely
