good win. OSU looked worse than I've seen them. That might have been their worst game of the year. They're not that bad.

But we didn't play our best, either, for most of the game, so it's kind of a wash.

Solid faux neutral court win on the resume and an 11-2 non conf in sight.

Then we can wring hands over yet another nasty opening conference schedule.

-The Brad Underwood Coaching tree most not have many branches, a little inbred. How many timeouts ya gonna call right before TV timeouts? And again, that offense is so stupid. Also, you can’t force your guys to play that crazy of defense for 30 games, while also asking them to run the most strenuous offense too.

-Lots of people saying we looked tired, rusty, etc... to start that game. Disagree, that’s just how Illinois, wait, I mean Okie State makes you look. Those dudes are blowing their load on every possession in the first half. Once they stopped to breath we smoked ‘em. That’s coaching and player leadership to stay tough and stay the course.

-Losing to Texas Tech was the best thing for us - it taught us how to play against crazy defensive pressure. Miles and Lewis have gotten really creative recently to get guys open. The set that got Borch a lay-up in the second half, and the back-door set that shoulda been a Palmer dunk were beautiful.

-This is my favorite Husker team I’ve ever been a fan of since I’ve been old enough to really follow them. The tourney year under miles was a good team, but I always thought TP and WP were pretty selfish. JP and Cope are a thousand times more enjoyable duo to watch than those guys in my opinion.

-James Palmer is so hard to guard if anyone in our squad can hit a couple threes. He’s a freight train to the rim.

-Sanford Pentagon puts on a great show - that was fun. Great meeting you in person @hhcmatt

I respect the fact that you may disagree, but my observation, and after just now watching the first ten minutes of the game, reinforces my take that we looked WAY out of sorts.  We missed open looks, we looked lost on both ends of the floor and we made a number of unforced errors.  That is not typical, and yes, some of it was forced, but most of it was self-implosion.

I think we can meet in the middle and agree that a lot of how they play can exacerbate if you were a bit rusty or off.

I would agree.  Remember that first half run only happened because we hit three threes in a row.  You also tend to figure out a difficult defense of scheme like that one as the game goes on.

On the other hand they certainly play it out on our guys like crazy especially in the first half. You could tell that their defense of intensity was not the same.

It makes you realize how impressive Texas Tech was when they did it to us the entire game.  After that game I said they would probably be the best defense of team we see all year.  Their number 4 NET ranking seems to be proving this correct.

didn't feel like making a new topic to ask this... does the southwest minnesota st game coming up count as a win? or is it just an exhibition?

idk, I was thinking the same thing. A couple of places I've been looking at, it doesnt even show on the schedule. obv they are not KP ranked as an FCS team. is this the first case of a midseason exhibition game? haha

It does not count for NET consideration.  We could lose that game and not have it count against us when it comes tourney selection time.

But it is not an exhibition game either.  The game will count towards our official win-loss record for this season.

So the Fullerton game is the last remaining non-con game that actually means anything for us.

Who woulda thought the thing that would take this team to the next level wouldn’t be roby taking his game to a new level(he has not) but Allen certainly has. He’s a threat to score 15 a night now and he musta picked up so much from Taylor and gill on the defensive end. He’s going to be a candidate to lead the big ten in steals I think

great job of miles getting him on campus and even a better job of getting the skill outta him in only his sophomore year.

Nice win, and a great crowd tonight.  By the way, this isn't the first time NU has played in Sioux Falls, but it's been a while.

Couldn't help but notice that there was a score typo in this 49 year-old article just like there is in tonight's OWH.  Some things never change, I guess.?

I'll take it! another W is another W, no matter how worthless it is. It's probably is debatable tho

Next day thoughts:

  • Apology #1 to Tom Allen. Early this year, I wasn't impressed and said so on this forum. I was very wrong. He has become a key part of the success of this team and will be going forward. Tom, I'm sorry.
  • Apology #2 to James Palmer. All through the offseason, I wondered if JPJ would be as effective this year as he was last year. I just wasn't sure he could match the previous year now that he had a lot more tape and other teams would try to game plan against him specifically. He did struggle early, but he is playing so well right now. It has been a lot of fun to watch. James, I'm sorry.
  • Roby continues to completely flumox me - and as above, thank goodness for Allen because he has taken over the #4 spot on the floor in my opinion. I am starting to wonder if Mr. Roby will figure this thing out. (I figured since I criticized Allen on this forum and he has come around, why not try it with Roby? Plus, I have a track record of being "opposite guy" in HHCC and it has worked out for NU as well. Might as well stay with what is working.)

That was the first season I was old enough to pay attention. Tom Scantlebury, Marvin Stewart, Chuck Jura, Leroy Chalk, Bob Gratopp, Al Nissen, Ken Cauble ... Augustana didn't stana chance against the Huskers.

Roby seems to be a guy with all the athleticism, all the right moves, all the skills ... but with very little instinct regarding what to do in any particular moment:

  • He has a great dribble drive, but he seems to choose to use it too often when he should pull up and shoot a 10-foot jumper.
  • He is a deadly shot-blocker, but too often attempts the block when he's out of position and likely to foul.
  • He's a skilled outside shooter, but he doesn't seem to trust his ability to catch and shoot in rhythm.
  • He's a good passer, but he lets the ball get stuck in his hands for too long.

I'll let more-skilled analysts break down his game more technically, but I see a player with a lot of potential, but not necessarily the basketball instincts to pull it all together, at least at his current age.
