Computer's in the shop, so I'm having to resort to other means. If there's already a place for post game thoughts that I missed, feel free to clean it up, @hhcdimes. Just a few thoughts the morning after.

*Disclaimer before I get too far along, I left early, so I didn't get to see everything, but I think I saw enough to get a decent handle on things. And I realize that Chadron St. is a terrible gague for this team.*

- The kids are gonna be alright. I was impressed by what I saw  from all three of the freshmen. Roby is just really good. Ran the floor well, can step out and hit some shots, can handle it a bit and he can leap. Will be fun to see him develop.

- Jordy is gonna have to learn to defend without fouling. There will be some growing pains. He's gonna be a load, though. You already saw the difference he made down low. He altered a lot of shots. He brings a youthful exuberance that this team could really use, as well. Loved seeing him dive for the lose ball on one his first trips down the court.

- Horne has a smooth stroke, too. That was good to see.

- Ed looked healthy and explosive.

- MJ is going to have some fun out there at the 4, I think, but not sure last night was his best night. That's ok.

- Jack looked a lot more comfortable this year than he did last year.

- Tai didn't play a ton, which I wasn't too shocked by. He'll play a lot more when the games count. The newcomers led the minutes column, which is probably the right call for last night.

- Didn't get a great read on Gill. Looked like he wasn't quite full speed yet. Had a couple of explosive plays, but nothing overly special. Hopefully as he gets more into playing shape we'll see the player we've been hearing about.

- Had the same thought about Glynn as I did Tai. Not concerned, just more of a night for the newcomers to get their feet wet than anything else.

- Curious to see how much time Evan Turner gets. He didn't show much offensively, but looked ok in the other areas of his game. I still think he'll be the ninth or tenth guy in the rotation, but he might play a few more minutes than I expected before last night. We'll see.

All-in-all, I left feeling encouraged after last night. Again, I know Chadron's not a good gague, and they've got a new coach of their own, but I've seen NU slog their way through these things before. They didn't do that last night. From the moment they stepped on the floor, there was a different energy and attitude than we've seen the past few years. There seems to be a bit of an edget to them. That's a good thing, even if it is spiked with a hint of naiveté. I have no idea what to expect from this team, but I'm excited to see what they turn into. This should be a fun team to watch.

You left early?  Did other HHCers berate you as you went?

Because when you're at a game you're never supposed to leave, even if there are more important things for you to get to.

Look, the laundry isn't going to wash itself. That would be a great invention though, wouldn't it? Just put all the clothes in a side compartment or something and the washing machine figures out what colors and fabrics can be washed together? I've always thought a washing machine that also drys your clothes would sell well. There's got to be a way to make that happen. I'm tired of forgetting a load in the wash and letting it sit there for a couple of days.

I didn't catch all of Miles' post-game but I wish I could have recorded it.

I think he said that, at half-time, he told the players about Glynn Watson "This cat could go out and get 20 points a night anytime he wanted" but, instead, was doing whatever he could to facilitate the offense.  That was clearly true.  Very unselfish play by Dr. Watson while trying to make everyone else better.  It's clearly his team and it's clear we have one hell of a point guard.

Miles says Jordy looked good, buuut ... he needs to work on conditioning, freethrow shooting, finishing stronger at the rim and not fouling.  Yep, pretty much.  But, wow, what upside that kid has.  He just needs to learn to play bigger.

I would say at the very least the 3 freshmen lived up to their hype.  All clearly warrant top 150 rankings.  I still say Horne is my darkhorse candidate for a spot in the main rotation.

Evan Taylor should have put to bed any lingering worries that we picked up a real stiff late in the process and wasted a scholarship for a couple of years on a guy who doesn't belong at this level.  Yeah, he had 6 turnovers.  Two of those were on really bad calls by the officials, IMO.  One he was called for a charge out near mid-court that should have been a block, and the other he was clobbered after crossing the timeline and the ball went out of bounds near the NU bench.  Miles gave the officials hell on both of those so I feel justified in saying those two weren't earned turnovers.  Still, 4 turnovers is too many and I think he'll learn to pass the ball a little sooner rather than dribbling into trouble like he did a couple of times last night.  But the kid has game.  He solves our depth problems at the guard position and will allow us to be a little more aggressive defensively than we might otherwise be without him on the roster.

The sophomores have all taken a step forward.  That's abundantly clear.  I can't say who I think has improved the most nor could I say who has improved the least.  I think they all look like they've stepped their games up a notch.  When the 4 sophomores were in the game, we absolutely were drilling the other team; Chadron went on runs against our bench.  (And, by "runs," I mean they didn't get outscored by quite as much.)  With this thought in mind, I'm going to lose patience if I continue to see uninformed fans claiming that Miles isn't/can't/doesn't develop players.  BS.

As I'm watching Isaiah Roby take over the game at times last night, I found myself feeling a lot less worried about how we're going to replace two 16+ ppg scorers.

I think this team looks better than they were a year ago.

   Pssst.  There are some washing machines that Do wash And Dry!  (think they are mostly in Europe though :o)  But think you're gonna have to wait a little more for one that sorts before washing.  ;)

My novice's impression of last night's exhibition game.  I think this is the most complete team we have seen under Miles.  I know Chadron State was completely out-classed, and not a good test, and Miles was in 'Experimental' mode, but I liked the Huskers balance of Offense and Defense.  Some players showed they could nail treys. Several players showed skill in driving to the rim. I'm liking the offensive look (shows what you can do with a little talent).  I thought Watson looked like a real floor general, dishing out assists to open players.  Defense looked good with several blocks and takeaways.  One of the student announcers made an interesting comment about Jordy's fouling; that is, his play looked  more egregious when he was guarding under-sized players.than it actually was, causing calls by the officials.  Not sure how true this is, but it might be easier for him when we get to Big Ten Conference play where there are more BIGS.  Overall, I think we might turn some heads this year.  :)

Oh? That's excellent news! I'm sure it'll just be a matter of time before they hit the big box stores here.

I should add a couple of things about Ed Morrow:

1.  Last year, it seemed like all he did during warmups was dunk the ball.  That used to bug the piss out of me.  He's not going to be able to just dunk the ball in games all the time; he needs to develop some other skills.  Last night, during warmups after halftime, I watched as Ed shot 17 footers from various spots on the floor and, wouldn't you know, early in the 2nd half, he nails a 17 footer from just inside the top of the key.  Keep broadening your skill base, Mr. Ed.

2.  There was a moment in the first half that Ed had the ball in the short corner with his back to the basket and closely guarded by a Chadron State player.  At this moment, Isaiah Roby had a clear lane to the basket and did the absolute right thing, which was to make a basket cut.  Ed could have easily made a bounce pass to a cutting Roby that would have resulted in a monstrous dunk for Roby and an assist for Ed.  Instead, Ed wheeled on his defender, went baseline and scored on a reverse layup.  The better play, in my opinion, would have been the bounce pass to a cutting Roby, but what are you going to do?

Watching that game last night left me upset.   Upset with AW3.   Oh why couldn't he buy in.   You add his outside shooting to this team and you really have something.

Two biggest concerns that stand out to me is going to be CONSISTENT outside shooting.   Gill will have games where he goes 4-6 from the arc and 1-7 the next.   McVeigh should be solid, but not real optimistic on others.   Horne showed he could hit it but he needs to get better defensively to consistently be on the floor.

Secondly, wish we had one more capable big.   Morrow and Jacobson are much improved.   And Jordy is a legit player, but one more body for depth would be nice.

As for the good.....

Ed Morrow is a grown man.

Jordy is big and strong.   Willing to be active.  Maybe too willing.   Needs to improve at the line.

Jacobson will just be solid.

Taylor impressed for his role.

Gill was a bit of a let down to me...but still showed he could score...wanting to see him a bit more fresh

McVeigh showed he could shoot

Webster was solid

Watson is terrific and could have done so much more.

Horne had a nice shot

Roby=man crush

The biggest thing to me....there's no bums in the group of 10.   In the past we've always had liabilities and holes.   Guys who were considered defensive guys, not because their defense was good, but because their offense was so bad.   No longer.   We're complete.   You see a legit 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on the floor.   You aren't robbing Peter to pay Paul.   That's exciting.

Oh yeah I also liked what I saw, a lot.  Looks like we will play hard.  We crashed the boards- really went after the offensive boards, didn't do the launch and run back on d that we have the last couple of years.

We scored on some fast breaks- even got out and ran when we didn't have numbers and then pulled it up.

Ran some offensive sets last night- saw guys going to spots, WAITING FOR PICKS, SETTING PICKS, then moving on.  Hit the back door high low for at least 6 points.

"comment about Jordy's fouling; that is, his play looked  more egregious when he was guarding under-sized players.than it actually was, causing calls by the officials."  Thought the same thing. Whem you are 2 times bigger than anybody else on the other team some times you get called for things that you won't against somebody of equal size and strength.  He does run well as twice I saw him bust his butt to get down the floor on a fast break.

No long scoring droughts even against crappy teams we always seemed to not score for a 3 to 10 min period every game.  Didn't do that last night.  Hope that stays part of our new look.

All in all was fun.  Was happy, and now have some new guys to cheer for.

Was weird to go to the Vault and not see either Benny or Shavon come out of the tunnel.

I like how he dribbled damn near the entire length of the court with his left hand like it was nothing.  That one last dribble with the right seemed a little awkward though, I suppose it was so he could gather for the dunk...

Announcer in Video:  "Isaiah Roby; Welcome to Nebraska!"  Rather, shouldn't that be "Nebraska, Welcome to Isaiah Roby!!!!!"   :)

Beautiful. Well done, Red Don.

I really like this Roby kid. :D

I feel like Ed hitting that 17-footer is what I thought he needed to be able to do in the off season. And I said as much. Felt great to see Ed swish it like a pro. NU will need that so later Ed can bangarang.

And Evan Taylor is a kid I was very happy to see join Nebrasketball.  An athletic 6'-6" player who is willing to do all the small things that make a team win was exactly the kind of player that NU needed after that one guy decided to depart. NU will be better when ET is getting after it defensively. And that drive & dish to Roby for a dunk was a thing of beauty!

One major takeaway after watching the scrimmage and exhibition.  We are going to be better than the experts have predicted.  How much better???  That is to be seen.  We have had teams in the past where we had "depth" where our 8th and 9th players were similar to our 2nd, 3rd and 4th players.  That said, the 2nd through 3rd players were pretty average.  This team we are 9 to 10 deep (heck 11 if you include Nick who can provide glue minutes).  But one through ten is pretty interchangeable on this team.  The great news, this group is very talented.

The thing that makes it tough is that seven of those players are sophomores or younger.  If that group of players play to their talent level AND play a mature game, we can greatly exceed expectations (in my humble opinion).

I'm really anxious to see how the freshmen respond to having to defend similarly talented (or perhaps just similarly sized) players as them. I hope they get that before facing Dayton. Louisiana Tech could be that team, especially if the arena isn't as energized as it usually will be. That will be a big test, I think. There were a few times where they were a little slow or soft and that's gonna get them beat against better competition.

Cruel trick by BTN today - I set the DVR to record Chadron game replay that was supposed to be broadcast this afternoon, and tried to watch it tonight. Instead, they substituted a replay of NU-OSU football in that time slot.

Bastards. Didn't need to see any portion of that game again.

Looks like they've rescheduled the NU-Chadron replay for Friday at 1 a.m. If they end up replaying NU-Wisconsin football from 2014 in that time slot instead, I may be smashing my DVR.

Fell for the same trick. Needless to say, not too happy.
