  1. Omaha is hosting the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament at the Century Link Center next season. How absolutely poetic would it be for Nebraska to get their 1st ever NCAA Tourney win in Creighton's home arena? And how much would it kill Creighton fans if Nebraska was able to make the Sweet16, while playing in Creighton's home arena? (especially considering Creighton will likely be watching the tournament on TV at home). That has the potential to be the ultimate gut-punch from Nebrasketball to Creighton, because you know that the local Omaha and Lincoln media will take full advantage of all of those potential storylines... Just throwing that out there. Not sure if it has been discussed on this board yet.

  5. Are these the same analysts that picked us last for this past season? With that being said, I think we should finish anywhere from 2nd to 6th at the very worst.

  6. 49r, I think that only explains part of it. If Brandon had been capable of putting up 11.5 points as a junior when we sucked and had trouble scoring, I don't think we'd have sucked as badly or had as much trouble scoring. Remember, that was the season where Diaz was out for extended stretches with his foot problems. And still Brandon only scored 6.7 ppg. I think a bigger part of the difference was in the way Miles utilized Brandon. He got him to dribble-drive and take defenders off the dribble to attack the rim. That made a huge difference. Miles talked during one of his radio shows last year about how he tried to get Walt to do what he had Brandon do, but that Brandon took to it more quickly. I think there was a night and day difference between Brandon Ubel as a junior and Brandon Ubel as a senior. Totally different player. And I think Miles deserves the credit for that.

  7. Yes it would but do you think Miles can do it in a matter of 7 or 8 months. To some people's standards, that's not very good. Moses knows someone who could do it in 7 days.

Thanks to GTA in the "Moses Ayegaba is N" thread on the Haymarket Hardwood: "Interesting nugget from BR... Ayegba said his relationship with Hunter played a key role in him coming to Nebraska. Indiana, Boston College, Miami and Long Beach State also showed interest in Ayegba as a transfer, he said."

  15. Your math is wrong. 694 minutes / 84 fouls is one foul per every 8.26 minutes. Given that you are allotted 5 fouls per game, he wouldn't, on average, reach 5 fouls until he participated in 41.3 minutes of playing time. Hey no one told me there would be Math here!

Good post. If he can give us 15-20 good minutes, I think it will have a big trickle down effect on the rest of the team.

  19. Today on Sharp and Benning in the morning, Gary Sharp commented that Nebraska is on the verge of a deal for a big-time matchup. He didn't get into specifics, or anything, but he sounded like he knew something that isn't yet public knowledge...Just throwing it out there.

  20. Honestly, If Ayegba can be a utility man, then that is all that I think Nebraska needs from him. Look at Rivers...He didn't stuff the stat sheets, but I think he brought something very valuable to this team that isn't found in the stats... If Ayegba can play with the kind of intensity that Rivers does, but do it with a 6'9", 250 lbs frame (with a 7'4" wingspan), then this team will, again, make considerable improvement. And again, equally as important, the addition of Ayegba allows Pitchford to play the 4-spot, rather than having to play out of position in the 5-spot. I think the statistical jump/development that we will see as a result of this addition will actually be on Pitchford's stat sheet...

Fair enough, Norm. FWIW, I happen to agree with you, I just think we have to be careful with our expectations of what Ayegba will bring to the table next year...whether he's able to develop into a serviceable player or not. All I hope for is he can be the rim-protecter we desperately missed last year, and we can get 15-20 MPG. That's worth the scholarship, IMO.

  22. We're getting better but we don't have that sort of depth and Miles doesn't really seem like a press guy...he's much rather them set up to prevent fast break points. I'd like to see us press every once and a while though.

  23. "40 minutes of Hell" ala' Arkansas 1994, hopefully we'll have enough interchangeable parts and flat out talent that we can come at people in waves. All of this will sort itself out of course, but it's nice to have a stacked roster without a HUGE drop-off between your 7 to 10 players.

  24. ...and let's be honest, he was either destined for Cornell or the Land of Corn. We will gladly take him. (Sorry for the cornish joke ) and Cornell is the original "Big Red", too, don't forget. The nickname "Big Red" for Cornell teams originated in 1905. The late Romeyn Berry '04, then a recent Cornell graduate, was writing the lyrics for a new football song. Since Cornell had no nickname at the time, Berry simply referred to Cornell as the "big red team" and it caught on. Berry was graduate manager of athletics from 1919 through 1935 and was recognized as an outstanding authority on Cornell, its traditions and personalities. He was a distinguished writer and newspaper columnist locally. For his musical composition Berry won $25. The song earned a spot in the Cornell Verses, joining rowing songs and other lyrics descriptive of Cornell life.

  25. Here is a comment I made elsewhere on this subject. Foul trouble propensity is, obviously, an issue for Ayegba. However, Jim Molinari might be able to help a little here--after all, the Leathenecks led the nation last year in fewest fouls committed while ranking second in scoring defense. Progress for Ayegba on his foul propensity issue will, in and of itself, increase the value of his contributions dramatically.

He sets a nice screen, too. As far as expectations, it's a damn site better than leaving the spot open for another year. Even 15 minutes of big muscles and long wingspan gives us more than what we'd have without him. And he might yet blossom with a change of scenery. He might have just needed to get out of G'town.

  28. Miles is and always has been a man to man guy. Now, he is smart so if zone is in our best interest you will see some of it, but I would be shocked if the base defense is anything but man.

Why wouldn't there be high expectations? Of course my definition of a high expectation may differ from yours. I expect him to provide solid minutes, be a great team player, playing within the role that is defined for him. I expect him to guard the post, and protect the paint. I expect him to set terrific picks. I expect him to rebound, and even if he does not get the board, I expect him to box out the world. I expect him to score when the opportunity exists. I expect him to improve his free throw percentage exponentially over his past few years and I expect him to score five to eight points a game. I expect him to make his teammates better. And finally I expect him to be a good citizen. I do not think that those expectations are exceptionally high. I believe they will be acheived quite frankly.

  36. I see a similarity between Hammonds recruiting ranking and those of Frank Kaminsky. Both were 3 star by Scout and Rivals. FK got 4 from ESPN while JH has 3. Neither was in the top 150 player of any service. In position rankings FK was 22, NR and 19, while JH is 17, NR and 23. Rivals and Scout listed FK as 220# in high school while JH is 5 to 10 lbs heavier. Looking at their pictures from high school they both look like skinny armed young kids. Kaminsky has obviously put in his years of work and we see a finely developed project. Miles is a character and attitude searcher. If he thinks he can mold Hammonds into a player, I trust he will.

  39. It's not important to Miles & Co. as I suspect Hammond could redshirt & work on his game while bulking up in a first-rate strength, conditioning & nutrition program. Win-win for both Jacob and NU with today's signing of Ayegba & his immediate one-year eligibility which will assist the team now & then Jacob can be developing toward his potential behind the scenes.

  40. Probably need to be more concerned about Pitch's father thinking Walt will be NBA-ready in a year than Walt himself. And, of course, Shields will be at NU for the duration. He'll likely enter med school at some point... TP is the only one who will likely leave after a B1G POTY season a la Stauskas.

  41. I don't think Nebraska is going to land Deng. I think he will end up at Baylor. It's just the feeling I get. I think Nebraska has a better chance of landing Domingo from Georgetown. I see Deng visiting. With the amount of time Harriman has recruited his fellow countryman he at least honors his visit and after that you never know.
