  1. 1. What production does Roby give us?

    • Similar to Jack this year
    • Similar to Morrow this year
    • Closer to Glynn/Jacobsen this year
    • Bench/Redshirt
  2. 2. Horne?

  3. 3. Gill

I have trouble believing that either Morrow or Jacobson will play the 4, at least next year. Jacobson neither has the ball handling nor foot speed to play against B1G 4s. Morrow is athletic enough but needs to improve ball handling dramatically. I guess MJ can become more athletic and EM can improve his ball handling skills but just not confident that will happen.

We tend to slot out rosters more based on defense than offense so who can Morrow or Jacobson guard seems more important for determining where they play than their offensive skills. I don't think either of them is an offensive focal point next year either.

Yes, you are correct hhc and defense is where I believe MJ becomes a liability. But you have to have some court skills on offense to play the 4. Unless you center is a stretch player your 4 has to have some ball handling skills to avoid a multitude of turnovers. this is where I see EM's weakness.

This is my prediction with the current roster and signees. We will be deep and I think minutes will be tough to come by for Fuller, Evelyn, and Horne.

Your lineup predictions reflect what a glut of players we have at 1 1/2 spots:  Guys who aren't big/tall enough to be true 5s and maybe not quick enough to be true 3s.

Jacobson is not a 5 in the B1G.  He'll play there by default if we don't get someone else, but if we do get that someone else, I think you're right that he shifts to the 4.  OR he backs up the 5.

He hasn't shown the athleticism to play the 4 yet.  Not at a middle-to-upper-tier B1G level.  And he'd have to fight the following players for minutes at the 4: Morrow, McVeigh, Horne and possibly Roby.

Morrow is far more athletic; I believe Horne has better post offensive skills and can step out and hit mid-range out to the arc; McVeigh was a better scorer in fewer minutes.  If we find a 5, Jacobson might start at the 4 but he might not.

I think Roby needs to be White's understudy.

I'm not as versed on the new guys as you are so I'll defer until I actually see them play at the college level before I render an opinion. If we could get a true center it would greatly change our fortunes for next season

The minute Gill becomes eligible he immediately becomes the best player on this team. May not be a better shooter or rebounder than White, but he is an overall better player.

Just curious why you say this?  Have you seen Gill play or just basing it that he is a transfer from Louisville?  I hope your right as people seem to have pretty high expectations of him.  I have yet to see him play so can't make any judgements on him but hope he is as good as everyone thinks he is.

Many freshman that are defensive liabilities are not as they get older.  Jacobsen is a smart, crafty kid by evidence of how many offensive put backs he gets despite some physical limitations.  This will translate to being a better defender as his career goes on.

I'm hoping for a starting lineup of

Watson/Gill/White/Morrow/5th Year XFer Big

Webster the first off the bench.  I think he should be Watson's backup as well.   He's valuable because he can be more than serviceable at two positions.   McVeigh, Roby and Jacobson are the next 3.

I hope this happens, it gives us a lot of versatility.

If Gill is as advertised the most important thing in my opinion is getting Glynn to improve his spot up jumper. If we have three guys who can knock down open shots on the perimeter and Ed / C inside we can be much better.

You just can not put out a lineup in which only 1 guy will consistently shoot the 3 at a good rate. I know Benny and Tai improved but they are still hesitant this year to shoot. You have to have guys ready and willing to knock down shots. That is why I like Jack as well.

Very deep next year.  If we make the proper strides in the offseason we have the makings of a decent club next year.  Tai is going to be very good next year either in or out of the starting lineup.

That's what has me optimistic.   So much more depth.  Miles spoke the other day about empty minutes.   No offense to him...but we don't have a Benny Parker next year.

Anton Gill is the 3pt shooting, lane driving, missing verbal leader that this program so desperately needs. If reading about the potential of guys you haven't seen yet gets you going, here's a double redbull for you from BR.

I'm pretty sure I can name 3 starters on next year's team:

PG  Watson

SG  Gill

SF  White

With Webster backing up the 1, 2 or 3, really.

THAT is a SOLID backcourt.

I feel comfortable that we can find a serviceable PF from among the rest of the guys on the roster.  What we still need is a guy who can wheel and deal in the low post.  That player hasn't yet been identified, unless the rumors were true.

Jacobsen isn't probably ever going to be an all-conference player, but he's going to become an extremely valuable member of this team. I think he's going to be a major stereotype embodiment.

Ubel part 2.

I think he'll be Jacobsen part 1. He's better than Ubel in some areas.

I think Jacobsen if he can simply grow into his body will be good enough to play the 5. He needs a full off season. I think next year we have the ability to play a multitude of lineups, from Watson, Gill, Webster White and Jacobsen to just about anything. Endless possibilities.

"If you saw Gill during a home game, you may have noticed him whispering in White’s ear during a timeout, or say something to Shields, or encouraging others."

This I have noticed, and it's great to see.

Did you see Jacobson standing next to AJ Hammons and Isaac Haas?  He looked tiny.  Benny Parkeresque.  Granted, Haas is a bit of a beast.  But he's giving up more than 2-3 inches to Hammons as well.

Here he is with Haas

Tai may very well be an important starter on next years team.  If he continues improving (that we have seen over the past few weeks) he may be a viable offensive weapon that goes along with his defense.

Dang, I still would love to see a 1-3-1 type of zone with Tai at the top (similar to Cookie B.)  He has the quickness and length to create the same type of issues that Cookie displayed.

Tai won't start ahead of Andrew White.

I don't see him starting ahead of Anton Gill.

I don't see him starting ahead of Glynn Watson at point, either.

I could agree with you about Tai starting, but then I break it down by position and I just don't see it happening.

I think Tai gets minutes and I think he'll be valuable in any of the backcourt positions.  But maybe not starting, just because we have quality players in front of him.

Now, if he grows 8 inches over the summer ...

Here is Gill mostly punishing the rim 3 years ago. He's spent the entire last year working out.

I'd suspect that defense and overall depth of talent were the reasons he wasn't playing at Louisville.

That video reminds me of me back in the day (when I had an 8 ft rim and a nerf ball.)
