Actually, you've gotta wonder about why any highly ranked player (or his parents) would want to commit to a team / coach that under-performs with highly ranked players. UNLV is a classic example. Consider this:

1. Last year's UNLV's team included one Rivals five-star junior, three Rivals four-star juniors, two Rivals four-star freshmen, and a host of three-stars to fill-in-the-cracks; and

2. Last years UNLV team finished tied for third in the Mountain West with Nevada, had a 10-8 conference record with one win in the conference tourney, had a total of 20 wins, did not make the NCAA tournament, did not get an NIT invitation, and did not accept a lesser tournament gig.

Apparently young players think, in UNLV's case, that past under-performance is not predictive of future under-performance. Hard to figure!

But if you read any of the UNLV fans tweets you would think that they won the NCAA last year. The one guy even told Cornish to come here because they raise banners. Ooooookaaaayyyyyy.

We will be fine, we already have some guys signed this year that on paper might not be what we think we need, but they will keep, this program from dropping and will only help to build.

The other two Deng and Cornish would just be cherries on top. We just aren't "there" yet with the "it" players but we will be. We will be.

Well...the crystal ballers are making predictions...two of them coming in today...Jerry Meyer the national guy and Michael Bohlin the Georgetown analyst both predict Cornish to UNLV. Closing percentage tumbles again. Who's next?

Oh good. Predictions made by two guys who have never been to Nebraska, never seen our facilities, and don't know our people. Those should carry a lot of weight.

Sorry about bumping my own post, but get this: this past season, UNLV played University of Nebraska at Omaha on November 15 in Vegas. UNLV prevailed, as one might expect, but by a score of 73-70. Also, Colorado St. swept UNLV last season--on Feb 5 UNLV lost to the Rams by a score of 75-57. And on February 22 UNLV lost 90-91 in overtime to Boise St. Now those are great examples of high-performance by highly ranked players . . . not.

Not going to say they are right or wrong but these are recruiting analysts and insiders that are "graded" for making these predictions. They usually wait until they "know something" or have "heard something" before they predict. Jerry Meyer is 100% correct when he has picked for UNLV and Michael Bohlin is also perfect when picking for UNLV. Let's hope they're wrong this time.

Why would you want to play for someone who has to "make room" for you?  Isn't that an indication they treat their players like chattel?  You go somewhere that is busy clearing room for new players, isn't that an indication that next year, they could be making room for someone to replace you?

That's about as smart as planning on a long term relationship with Elizabeth Taylor.  Or, for those too young to remember Liz, like someone planning a long term relationship with Madonna.

dude, Madonna is like 60 years old now...

She's 55.

And before Madonna turned 20, Liz Taylor was already on husband #6.

Meyer also previously had Cornish to Nebraska :(

Jerry Meyer predicted Cornish to Nebraska on 5/6.  I would think once they make a prediction it should be set in stone....but apparently not.  It's a fun little thing to follow but I'm not so sure they have any inside info.  With that said, Ill be surprised if Cornish picks us.

Guys go to Oregon to play football because they have cool uniforms. He's probably been naturally inclined to lean towards UNLV like many people would because it's in Las Vegas.  We'll see how he feels after he actually gets there.

The thing with Cornish we have going for us is that his parents seem highly involved/invested so he's less likely to pick a school based on fluff. I know I'll be slightly less disappointed if he picks Wake Forest over us as opposed to UNLV.

I think swan is seeing the same way I am and that is if you listen to some of their more vocial fan base one would think that they had a great year last year and every year since they won their one title.

I don't see them as being the same team next year so they may be better, but to read what some said to try to get him to not come here where made up to sound better than they are/were.

I also agree that mom and dad may have the biggest swing vote in all of this. He was going to Tennessee first, it is not like he is just looking for the first time. Don't know if this helps us or not, but we kind of are like Tennessee if you kind of think about it.

From what I hear, Momma Cornish is running this show. If UNLV can convince her that going to school 6 blocks from the Strip is the best thing for her son, then we may be in trouble. Not saying they won't be able to do that.

Also heard he hated Wake.

Parental involvement in this one gives me some hope.

Las Vegas is simply not a place to send your young son if you want him to focus on school.

How many Academic All-Americans have they had?

Depends on how much House credit UNLV gives to parents on visits at their hotel.  May be enough to entice them.

Tim Miles probably hasn't had an "under-performance" season in his entire career. Committing to Tim Miles is a commitment to an extraordinarily successful "over-performance" coach. There may not be a coach in action today who has out-performed Tim Miles in this regard. The Tim Miles' performance history is one of the best predictors imaginable of future "over-performance."

If basketball is the main factor, I think we have unlv beat.

we are in the superior conference

we'll be preseason top 25

we have a greater need for a guard

superior facilities

newer arena

better coaching

a better chance to play right away.

more exposure to scouts and tv viewers.

I don't know what the policy is in the recruiting forum on reposting from other sources, but I did actually get this blurb emailed me today, supposedly from JC Shurburtt at 247.  Apologize if this was already posted, but I didn't see it in this thread:

"Shooting guard Jordan Cornish (New Orleans, La./Brother Martin) told Taylor Bern of the Las Vegas Sun that the UNLV staff has made him a top priority and also cited the storied tradition of the program, along with his relationship with five-star Runnin' Rebels signee Rashad Vaughn as a reason that UNLV is under heavy consideration. He visits Las Vegas this weekend and will decide next Tuesday. Nebraska and Wake Forest also are under consideration. Currently, all signs from sources point to the Runnin' Rebels."

To me, that sounds pretty locked down for UNLV. I think in his mind he's already there, especially if they will make room for him.  I don't even think logic plays into it much.  UNLV has definitely sold him on an idea before he's even set foot on campus.
