KNTK - Morning Take:  Believe in Husker Hoops? / 2-minute drill

http://theticketfm.com/media/com_podcastmanager/MorningShow/1-31_close.mp3

KNTK talks about how the Nebraska Hoops band immediately kills the vibe during the game. What are your thoughts on this? "Kill" the band? Revamp the music the band plays? Coordinate the speaker music/band music better? Do you like the band the way it is right now? I'm curious to see how others feel about this.

No offense to the band at all!!! As I feel they are important. The timing must be improved of when they play.

There was one time out Thursday in the second half where crowd really got going and time out was called. If they would have cranked a loud song like the did later in game it would have been rocki g. They went to the band and it really tanked the mood. There is a place for the band by timing of when they play is key.

The pep band is great! Love it!

This is a college team. The pep band is a part of the college scene. It plays the school's fight song, it plays the school's traditional songs, it provides a rallying force, and it brings energy to the arena! It provides a high level of live and great-quality sound volume that fills the room over-and-above the crowd noise, instead of recorded sound over the loud speaker. The pep band is particularly enjoyable at the conclusion of a game when we are all basking in the glow of a victory.

On coordination with related activity, the pep band actually comes in and out of performance exceptionally well, from my observation, with the game and loud speaker activity--it appears that they work very hard on this.

Actually, I find it hard to believe that a substantial group of people perceives the pep band as anything but a great asset for Nebrasketball games!!!

Yup.

Timing is debatable.

That's about it.

They can and will be more creative if they are allowed to be.  We need the Pep band, and I love the Pep band.  Understand that the band is simply a part of the "presentation" and they are directed as to when they play.  If you have a problem with the timing and so forth, do not take it out on the band, instead, find out who the actual choreographer is...

Yeah I don't think anyone here feels pep bad is a bad thing. Timing is the issue and its not really up for debate. Even the other night in our section the guys behind us were saying the exact thing questioning timing. I can't remember one time that the bad got the arena as fired up and out if their seats as it does when some Of the arena jock jams etc songs are played.

That being said you can't have a true Husker event without the tight song and some other pep band songs as they do a nice job and will always be part of this university and should be.

This dude is nuts.  Keep the band.  OK - I wouldn't mind doing away with that slow intro they are talking about, but I love everything else about our pep bands.

Hey, if they want to do away with tradition, lets stop calling ourselves the Huskers.  I mean, who husks corn anymore?  Maybe we can be called the Fighting Smartphones.  Yeah, and do away with red and white.  Let's paint the PBA from floor to ceiling with acceptable earthtone colors!

This was also an issue of odd timing between pep band & piped-in music at the Bob, maybe they'll figure it out a lil' better by the second year at the Vault. Keep in mind, there's a lot of moving parts in the production of Nebrasketball and it's ever changing as the game goes along that essentially prevent a "perfect" mix of live and taped music...

Pep band stays. Any other talk is ridiculous and sacreligious. It's COLLEGE SPORTS. COLLEGE BASKETBALL. One of the best things about the Bob in the 90's was how the pep band would get ROCKIN' during timeouts. Maybe we could bring back guitars with it to boost the level.

Get rid of the Scarlets. Honestly... with no yell squad due to no tumbling....the Scsrlets, while attractive, are major buzzkills. The student section does a better job than the Scarlets.

I just ignore the cheerleaders. I remember starting the "and white", et al. (related to red/white call & response chants) and the cheerleaders were furious we were doing it. They would stare us down every time we "ruined their cheers". Fortunately for the students, we didn't care what they thought and it's now a solid "tradition"/chant that the students still use.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the students are the ones that make the traditions, build and sustain the momentum, and the cheerleaders really just follow along. No offense. I mean, it's tough to have 10 girls pump up an entire arena, but it's the students that really make a difference.

And black jerseys.

At the Indiana game I said to my wife what a "buzz kill" it is when the crowd is rocking and then the music goes away and the pep band plays. I have nothing against the band but WE DO NOT NEED A BUZZ KILL!

Do I believe that bands belong in college sports?  YES!

Do I like our pep band?  HELL NO!

Well- the band is fine- its the leadership and the style and the timeing that really blows!  I dont think that they have changed their music AT ALL for the last 3-4 years!  Every game, same music at the same time of the pregame/game.  They need to learn new, updated, current music.  Not the typical pep band stuff from the '80's.  I have gone to the conference tournament the past 4 years and the "stuff" that the other school's pep bands blow our "stuff" away!  Yeah, also not a fan of the Scarlets "show" in the first timeout in the second half.

I'm not a fan of the band. I'm not saying get rid of them, but would like things to change. Examples are change music and don't play when we are on a run and the other team calls a timeout. Biggest buzz kill. I'm also not a fan of the music that the arena plays. The DJ or whoever does the basketball games need to change. They haven't changed the line up once this year. And they haven't played Let Me Clear My Throat, which I think is like our Jump Around song that Wisconsin does. Change timing and get some new songs for the band, I would be fine with it.

The band is great. Would like the fight song and maybe even Gary Glitter (which was awesome during the glory days) during the other team's TOs. The Scarlets routine was a huge bring down last game (and really every game). It'd also be nice if we ditched the 1996 Jock Jams CD.

Jeez, talk about living in the past!

"Rock 'n Roll Part II" is about as played out as it gets.  I vote a great big NO for bringing that crap back.  I mean, really, should they also start playing the Rocky theme?  How about "25 or 6 to 4"?  Maybe a little "Jesus Christ Superstar"?

I think we're trying to AVOID having the band go stale here, not encourage it.

I would also put the following songs on the no play list:

Seven Nation Army

Zombie Nation

SportsCenter Theme

I agree with this completely.

I also think they need to play a whole lot louder.  This is not a symphony, guys...volume is the key here.

If you want to see an example of a good pep band, you need to look towards the MEAC or CAA (or A10 now that VCU is a member) and try to copy what their bands do.

It's loud, they make you pay attention, and they keep the crowd into the game.

I like the band.  I don't think they're a buzz kill.  It's certainly possible they could do some things to improve the effectiveness of the band during timeouts but their music isn't all "old" and they help to create the atmosphere rather than ruin it.

I think one of the problems with updating their music selection is that not all "current" music is suitable for pep band arrangements.  How would you arrange a rap thing to be played by a band, for example?

But their current play list includes at least a couple of songs that have been released within the last year or two.

I'm sure you probably can't stand One Direction, but "Best Song Ever" was released just last summer and they already have it arranged to be played by the pep band.

And I'm sure some will say they can't stand Bruno Mars (irrelevant artists get picked to perform in the Superbowl all the time) but his song "Locked out of Heaven" was released in October 2012, about 15 months ago, and it's already been arranged as a pep band song.

The people who say they haven't updated their musical selections in 4 years or so haven't been listening.  Unless you're talking about songs like "Hail Varsity" or "There is No Place Like Nebraska."
