Watched the highlights.

Rollie looks outstanding on defense and very, very good on offense.  He’s an awesome pickup.

I’m gonna guess our energy guys are Gary and Morgan.  For those of you who have seen Morgan play, is it fair to say his presence was missed today?

Is Berke out of shape or do we want his playing weight up for the B1G?  His body type looks very different that UCLA, but I liked his rebounding and skill.  Lots of upside there.

We definitely have some pieces and a lot of flexibility for our potential lineups.

It was an exhibition, so pretty ugly at times, but I definitely see the vision of this team.

-Gavin hit some pretty good shots. Some open and contested looks. Glad to see him get some shots to fall. In contrast, Connor couldn't get anything to fall.

-As many have said, Berke was a bit bigger than I expected. He has some good size to him and I liked him bringing the ball up when he was on the floor. The plan seems to be rotate him between the 4 and 5 depending upon lineup, and without Morgan today he was asked to come off the bench.

-rollie is going to be awesome. He mad a few plays that had me feeling great about having a pg again. He didn't take any shot outside of 5 feet and ran the offense effectively. I'm going to really enjoy him.

-meah operating as a handoff hub isn't something I love, but if they get him to dive more on those handoffs it would work with him. I don't expect anything from him but defense, dunks, and rebounds. All of which will be important come big ten play.

Sloppy on offense most of the night, but defense locked in, which was awesome to see honestly. Get some quality reps in this early non conference slate going into st Mary's and Creighton

There will be a couple lineups with this team that won’t have the shooting acumen we had last year. I know some on here don’t want him to shoot a three at all, but Gary will need to keep defenses honest and shoot a couple. He shouldn’t be hunting shots but a couple catch and shoots from the corner or wing are what we’ll need.

As a team, we looked to be playing slow and reactively rather than anticipating and playing quickly. Saw our ball handlers try to push it from time to time but the other four weren’t getting up to that pace. That speed hopefully comes along a bit more each game.

We also played guys that won’t be regular rotation players for ~40 mins. That’s good and bad, good for their experience and motivation, bad for getting time in a game-like setting for our rotation players who are still learning to play together.

Am I the only one that is absolutely alarmed about the rebounding? I think the shooting will come around, but we just got out rebounded by a small D-II school. I did not see the kind of effort or intensity that is necessary to compete for rebounds in the Big Ten. Frankly, we looked soft. We know Gary is going to bring it on the glass, but I'm not confident in anyone else besides Worster.

Hopefully, they we just disinterested against an overmatched opponent, but that would be a whole separate problem because our season starts with a bunch of cupcakes and just winning those games isn't enough. They need to run up all of those margins to help the metrics that are key to getting into the tournament.

I expect us to be a better rebounding team than last year but not expecting us to be elite on the glass, so yes that concerned me as well. Juan should never get just 1 rebound and Meah should be getting closer to 10 than 5 IMO.

Berke getting double digits in the scrimmages is a good sign though. I hope Morgan shows some desire on the glass as well.

With the length (and depth) we have we should be holding our own for sure. I’m not real worried yet but definitely something to keep our eyes on.

I also hoped we would be better on the glass with the additions this year, although with the offense coach likes to run it can be difficult to hit the O boards as everyone is spread out on the perimeter with that 4 out, 1 high post set.  We do need to control the defensive glass better this year, or you might as well go back to a smaller lineup with shooters.

Ya prolly one of my bigger concerns but some of those rebounds were a product of maybe them shooting so many 3s and leading to some long rebounds. But you’d think we would of been able to get more offensive rebounds ourselves!

I think the opponent played a part in our effort yesterday. But the way we play defense makes boxing out a bit more difficult than straight man by having so much space between you and the person you're responsible for boxing out. You have to be very disciplined to know when the shot goes up and keep yourself in front of who you’re guarding. The offense has a bit of an advantage facing the basket and likely knowing the shot is up before the defender, and picking a good angle to get around them. Hopefully as a team we get better at it as the new faces do it more.

Overall I thought we played alright.

GVSU was definitely pretty good.

They will probably be better than some of the teams we play early in the non-con.

GVSU plays Purdue on Wednesday night.

It will be interesting to see the result of that game.

Before I worry too much about our bigs, I would turn to a couple of guards/wings that were problematic.   They have to check their men instead of running by them.  I won't call anyone out yet as this was an exhibition, but if you watch next week, let's see of that issue is resolved and if that fixes the issue.

The two guys mentioned for their rebounding acumen earlier in the thread, well, each of those 2 had only 1 rebound, namely Juwan & Rollie. Meanwhile, Berke pulled down a dozen rebounds. Am I missing something with the "rebounding woes"? It was an exhibition against a team that shot a ton of outside shots with a lot of weird caroms. I'm not too concerned after one weird exhibition game. Let's see how it goes in the next few weeks & come back to the discussion. Box out & grab the ball. It ought to be all right. NU has guys who can rebound, but only time will tell. GBR

DIdnt watch the purdue game at all but my guess would be grand valley wasnt playing as inspired as they were against us... playing two big ten teams in a row seems demoralizing especially if the second one was against the national runner up. At least I hope thats what cause the disparity in the two scores 🤣 either that or purdue is like 30 points better than us (as of today) lol
