  1. I’m going to have to disagree. First, they represent a quad 1 win opportunity. So that’s not like any other game on the schedule. Second, this game is Creighton’s red circle on the calendar game, and has been since the mid 90’s. And nebraska trying to downplay the rivalry and say it’s just another game is one reason why we get our butts kicked often. I guarantee you that Sam Griesel didn’t view it as no different than any other. And third, I’ve lived in Omaha my entire life as a diehard Husker hoops fan. I loathe the Jays. I loathe the sweater-vest and 3/4 zip wearing, snobby cu fans who make snide remarks the next day in the office. I’ve been putting up with it for over two decades as an adult. I hate that they developed into a relevant and nationally ranked program while their fans also cheer for 9 win seasons and bowl game appearances. I dislike that they built their program with a mixture of clean cut Korvers, Kalkbrenner, Dane Watts, and Grant Gibbs types countered by the P’Allen’s, Cavel Witters, Rodney Buford’s, and Mo’ Watson ilk. I loathe CU. I dislike Jayskers. I find them beyond annoying. I respect coach Mac as a coach but will never ever be a part of his plantation. Sorry to vent. I’m ready for Friday now. GBR!!!!

    It's Creighton Week

My hatred of Creighton has waned a little bit now that I no longer live in Omaha and have moved out of state. I still get fired up for this game, but not as much since I don't have to listen to Jay and Jaysker fans chirp about their team incessantly. I want to win this game for the fans like you that are still living in enemy territory. You deserve a dub, my man. P.S. Grant Gibbs was a thug, and I am bothered by you putting him in the clean cut category. Wearing an accountant's hair cut doesn't change that fact.

No vent. Creighton has an exceptional program and they have a very complimentary team. They suck.

  4. I’ve been getting incessant texts from my Jaysker coworkers all day today. One sent a short video clip of Coach Hoiberg today calling out Jayskers and said “maybe if nebraska wasn’t so terrible at basketball there wouldn’t be Jayskers” Which means they only want to cheer on the bandwagon. I’ve been through seven levels of 2000-2024 nebrasketball hell folks. I’ve driven from Omaha to Lincoln hundreds of times and driven home dejected by crapping games away. I’ve seen 6500 at the Bob for years and watched us as we toiled under Collier and Doc - when Tim gave us a glimpse of what could be but couldn’t sustain. Never once did I say “it’d be easier for me to just cheer for Creighton because they win” but apparently some fans do…

    It's Creighton Week

I have to think it's pretty important for in-state recruiting. Crayton kicking our ass on the court most every year over the past couple of decades has to be a factor in our dismal record in head to head recruiting efforts with Nebraska kids. At some point we have to turn this around. It's an important game beyond the Omaha pukes strutting around the office after another Jay win.

  7. Interesting to read the variety of opinions after the St. Mary's game. I only saw the second half, so I missed the worst part. Although I'm disappointed we let a non-con Q1 win slip away, I did like some of what I saw from the team. First, we played with heart and passion, and in some sense, that alone almost propelled us to a win. Meah is clearly a liability and a fish out of water in the 5-out set. Yet, he did some things on defense and provided some intangibles we needed. He altered a few shots and threw his body around on the boards to point that even when he didn't get the rebound, his effort allowed for Berke and others to do so. We will need him to play situational minutes against some of the bigger lineups we will face in conference play. I'm confident Fred and Co. will figure out how to best utilize him in those situations. Berke and Morgan will have to play 5 in order for us to be competent offensively. Second, the new guys haven't gelled yet in our offensive sets. Whoever noted that we don't have enough activity away from the ball was spot on. I am hopeful that will change once the lineup combinations take better shape. Way too many turnovers and sloppiness with the ball. I am a bit surprised Worster has committed so many turnovers. Too much dribbling and not enough side-to-side movement of the ball and failure to cut with purpose. We've also missed too many chip shots at the rim, not only in this game, but in the other games as well. It looks like we're rushing things and not playing under control when we get in the lane. Despite that, we were in a position to beat St. Mary's. They have some real dudes on that team and I wouldn't be surprised if they beat Gonzaga once during conference play. Finally, like Fred said, I think the lid will come off the basket for our 3 point shooting at some point during the season. Essegian has a beautiful stroke, but his footwork and balance have been suspect so far. While Griffiths has been a defensive liability to date, I think he's got the length and athleticism needed to be a good team defender and simply needs to have a fire lit under him to get him to expend effort on the defensive end. We will need his potential firepower on the offensive end at some point to get us over the hump. I'm hopefully optimistic that the pieces will come together in time to get us into position for another NCAA run. It would be a shame if that happened in late January and happened too late for us to have a legit run.

  8. It's going to be even more painful this year with the football game the day after because there will be jayskers in my face shitting on Nebraska on Friday that will be in the trenches with me for the football game on Saturday. Screw all jayskers

It's different it's just a little off because we're playing so early in the season. We're playing in Hawaii this season. The last time we did that the Creighton SID trolled us at 3am because he was hate watching our game. The one time we won at the CHI Center was because we had a guy on the team who cared about beating those guys. Let's beat these jags!

I’ve never understood the “brotherly love” between Husker fans and CU fans who say “I cheer for the other team outside of the once a year meeting” blah blah blah. CU fans can kick rocks and I wish they’d lose every single game they play. It’s a rivalry. We don’t have to wish them well outside of our game.

  14. The only point of distinction I'd make is whatever time measurement you use it's preceded by "HATE Creighton". Examples - HATE Creighton minute. HATE Creighton decade. HATE Creighton millennium. Etc. I think it should be more along the lines of, "HATE Creighton a little more than usual week." Or maybe something a little more succinct.

  15. Growing up in Omaha, I have always separated my hate for Creighton from the fan base to coach Mac and their product on the floor. I hate their fan base; I don't hate Coach Mac or their style of play I actually think they've had a lot of fun players to watch this past decade. That being said, growing up in Omaha, I've put up with Jayskers my entire life they suck. They always have their noses stuck so high up in the air for a program that has only made one elite eight you would think they've been to multiple final fours the way they act. At least Husker football fans have seen winning so can act that type of way (to a degree). Creighton has not. Describing jayskers to my out of state friends they all see the stupidity that being a jaysker is. It blows their minds when I tell them yeah so basically 70% of their fan base cheers for Nebraska in football, baseball, and volleyball then come December they all hate Nebraska. It's never made any sense to me they suck I really hate their fan base, but have a ton of respect for what Coach Mac has been able to build there.

  16. Long time listener, first time caller. As a Jays alum growing up in Nebraska, I promise I come in peace. I support both schools in all sports unless it's that one day where they meet. Certainly doesn't work out well for me during VB season! Couple of good points made here... - Believe me when I say the sweater vest wine and cheese crowd bothers most CU fans as well. As a resident of the upper deck often in sweatpants and a hoodie, the lower bowl can really suck the life out of the crowd. But their financial support over the years likely has a say as to where the Jays are as a program, so I guess we tolerate it. - Does CU circle this game every year? Yes and no. I'd say this year the Husker game is probably the 4th most anticipated home game. 1A and 1B are KU and UConn. I'd say Marquette is always pretty heated and exciting, and then Nebraska. Certianly gets fans in the seats, but I don't think we'll be making any "Beat Nebraska" buttons...maybe - For this game, it is interesting defensively. Nebraska loves to double and trap, which can often leave shooters open. St. Marys took advantage and if you look at last year, Scheierman took 19 threes, which is insane. I imagine they double Kalk and continue to trap baseline. It's a matter of if that will cause CU to panic or find the open man and make shots. - Jays defensively always funnel everything to Kalk down low. They force you to drive off of the 3 and take a tough 2. Huskers haven't exactly lit it up from 3 and the Jays 3-pt defense this year has been subpar, so that's something to watch. If Nebraska can hit a few 3s and some tough 2s in the paint, watch out. - Kalk often gets labeled as soft, but truth is he is just told not to foul and use his length to alter shots because when he comes out, the Jays are in trouble. Sometimes that works, and sometimes Derrick Walker torches him. Curious if Nebraska has a guy that will take on that challenge this year. Overall, it should be fun to watch. I'm thinking 78-71 but I could see either team coming out on top. Should be fun!

  17. Potts led the team in both scoring and rebounding as well as playing respectable defense against one of an opponent’s bigs. No one player can replace her. Thankfully we have other scorers but rebounding and interior d now become big question marks. Last night the team rebounded well and played generally solid d, but the caliber of opposition will soon ramp up significantly. Most B1G teams play two bigs so Petrie and Hargrove will be keys going forward. And the other largely unspoken factor is the play of Markowski, which has to get much better.
    3 points
  18. Better effort in 2nd half. Rimdal addition is huge with Weidner out. I would pair Petrie with Markowski in the starting lineup. Coley and Moriarity have opportunities to step up and be more than role players. Everyone has to step up to reduce the impact of losing Potts. Too much sloppy play for my taste. Bench played better than the starters.

  22. I have family members who do the same. But I never understood, and will never understand, the Creighton fans who'll root against Nebrasketball, then put on their Husker shirts for the football/volleyball/baseball games. And for that reason I've always hated everything about Creighton, and always will.

Would you wear a Red Sox hat with a Yankee jersey while walking in the Bronx? Rationalizing your Jayskerness doesn't change anything. You're still a Jaysker. Pick a side of the rivalry and loathe the other, like us civilized folk.

  27. It's easy to pick out who lives in Omaha and who doesn't A win or a loss versus a rival has little to no bearing to the outcome of the season. I don't have to live with the consequences of coworkers after this game, so that probably plays a role. But this is more people taking a rivalry personal than it is seeing for what it is. It's like the Big Ten trying to force a Nebraska/Iowa rivalry over Thanksgiving. It's whatever you make it. But vent away! Appreciate your perspective!

I have actually seen us beat them once in Omaha. (Benoit Benjamin was their star and Willis Reed was their coach). Maybe I could also count the CHI game when we beat Oregon there as well. (As I recall, we had to bring our own court then)

Creighton could very well come out and make 12 more threes than we do and run us out of the gym like last year and most games vs them in the last 25 years. But they aren’t nearly as good this year without Scheierman and Alexander. Their backcourt is not very impressive. Pop Isaacs isn’t a typical Mac guard. He’s erratic, has poor shot selection and is terribly inefficient. Has been his whole career. Neal is not very skilled and can’t shoot. Ashworth can shoot the crap out of the ball, but his ball handling and lack of quickness gets exposed against bigger, more athletic guards. And that’s pretty much it for their backcourt right now. Not much depth there. If Creighton makes <10 threes and you can somewhat keep Kalkbrenner off the offensive glass, you can beat them.

Meah/Berke/Morgan have a lot Fouls to Burn on Kalkbrenner, but I think the cumulative affect of them plus a Juan Gary leaning hard on him throughout the Game should get us to the Winner’s Circle.

  36. Just another game on the schedule, no different than any other. As with the prior games, I hope we start to gel as a team and exit the non-conference slate with a respectable record. I'm more excited about squaring off against some of these newcomers in the Big Ten.

I live out state and have never hated Creighton. I enjoyed their success from the time of Red McManus and Paul Silas through Eddy Sutton , Tom Apke, Tony Barone, Dana Altman to the present. But I always am a Husker first. We need a win Friday afternoon and evening. To me, anything that brings attention to basketball in Nebraska is a good thing. I clearly understand the dismay of those of you who deal with Jayskers daily.

Was a pretty selfish frustration foul 90 feet from the basket. You have to be smarter than that.

  40. "so Petrie and Hargrove will be keys going forward." ..... So far I think I can see development/advancement in Petrie's play from last year. I really thought that Hargrove would adapt more quickly to D-1 play and perhaps she will but right now she doesn't seem able to contribute much. Her size and strength put her in a good position to contribute, but she needs to get confident and assert herself - as Hake as done. But i hope we don't wait a year for that to happen

  41. I forgot to add I also hate this "we don't care about Nebraska, Nebraska only cares about us, we care more about the big east" approach Creighton fans have taken the past few years. Them pretending they don't care about an in-state rivalry, yeah ok whatever

  42. As Amy stated in the post game presser, it will be all hands on deck to put a little extra in with the loss of Potts. Agree with Petrie moving into the starting spot. Think Hargrove is still adjusting to the D1 game so she would be better coming off the bench.

  47. I'm going to point to one more thing that led to the loss--when we went up 5 in the second half and turned it over on 5 or 6 consecutive possessions. That was just unbelievably brutal. Involved no missed 3s, but was devastating.
    1 point
  48. Janowski was 1-6 from 3 in the intrasquad scrimmage and exhibition. I love his future, but I don't think he's ready. Before we decide this team needs shooting so badly to burn a redshirt, we need to start by giving more minutes and shots to Essegian, Griffiths and Morgan and less to Ulis and Meah.
