Just a little opinion from me on the scholarship deal. If we have scholarships to I want all of them fill if the person who gets it is deserving. Why wasted a scholarship on a player you know won't play (Vooch) when you can save it for a good player you can get next year?

Pelini really pushed the conference angle with Jordan. Asked him why in the hell he'd want to play in the MWC when he could play in the B1G? Heard he was really good with the family.

Who's UNLV's football coach and does he care to take time out of his day to promote his university to a basketball recruit? Is he relevant enough for said basketball recruit to even care?

A lot of people have suggested that Pelini has been upstaged by (and is no doubt threatened by) the success and dynamism of Tim Miles.  The fact he spoke with a basketball recruit suggests maybe the notion that he feels threated by Miles is BS.

We are not over the hump in recruiting.  Hard to compete against programs that don't really care about the kids, will tell them what they want to hear, and view scholarships as one year contracts.

Not saying we can't get there, just saying we have a long ways to go before we land top 150 recruits here, especially athletic 6-8 to 6-10 guys, which Jordan is not

OK, so Jordan is not one of those athletic 6-8 to 6-10 guys that we're not ready to land.  Am I missing something here?  There's a type of player we're not yet ready to land and he's not one of that type, so ...

Unfortunatly I think you are correct.  Eventually we will start beating out some of these schools but when UNLV comes calling it's hard to turn them down.

Why?  Because it's a big city with casinos?  Lots of recruits turn them down every year.  What's so special about UNLV that you think we can't compete with them?  I mean, if you had said, " ... but when Duke comes calling it's hard to turn them down" I could understand it.  But UNLV?  What's so special about them?  The slot machines?  The hookers?  What?

In Jordan's case I think it's about playing with his buddy Rashad Vaughn.

Style of play is also a factor.  Why do you think Iowa keeps getting good recruits?  Because they score the ball.  UNLV has the "Runnin' Rebels" tradition of uptempo basketball.   Our identity for the last 15 years has been slow, low-scoring basketball.  Even with Petteway last year we were still like 275th in scoring offense.

Lets just be clear about UNLV.  Some of their recent recruits:

2014:

G Rashad Vaughn - Rivals 5-stars (#8 overall)

F Dwayne Morgan - Rivals 5-stars (#15 overall)

C Goodluck Okonoboh - Rivals 4-stars (#31 overall)

2013:

G Jelan Kendrick - Rivals 4-stars (JUCO)

F Christian Wood - Rivals 4-stars (#40 overall)

2012:

F Anthony Bennett - Rivals 5-stars (#7 overall)

G Katin Reinhardt - Rivals 4-stars (#38 overall)

F Savon Goodman - Rivals 4-stars (#72 overall)

These guys have recruited 7 players ranked among the top-75 NATIONALLY over the last three seasons.  They aren't beating the likes of Nebraska and Wake Forest for those dudes.  They are beating Duke, North Carolina, Florida, Kansas, UConn, Kentucky, Arizona, etc.  How are they doing it?  I don't know, and it doesn't matter...but the fact remains that if they can out-recruit absolute blue blood programs for guys, clearly they have something pretty compelling going for them.  Should we really be surprised that a kid they tell "hey, we'll make room for you" would want to jump on that?

I get all the turnover and transfers and yada yada yada...but guys who literally can go anywhere in the country are choosing to play at UNLV.

I don't think if Cornish in fact picks the Rebels we should tear the kid down (I do hate his twitter behavior though, but I digress) like he made a dumb or ill-informed decision.

All we can do is sell a kid on our strengths, and hope that's enough. UNLV is kind of a gorilla in the recruiting game.

Because they currently are and historically have been a much better basketball program than us.

No, they aren't Duke.  But I think they're firmly in the "second tier" of household-name college basketball programs, especially since they've risen back to prominence in the last few years.  We aren't even close to that, yet.

When you start showing them the history of the Runnin Rebels kids pay attention.  It's the same reason why it's so important for us to get football recruits in on gameday because the history and tradition of NU football blows them away.  I'd agree that I think NU would be the smart choice for him in regards to his future but UNLV is a very popular choice if you are just worrying about playing basketball.

Not to mention that Anthony Bennett was the #1 pick in the NBA Draft last season.  When their coach tells kids he can get them to the NBA, there isn't much better proof than the #1 overall pick. Yes, we are on the rise.  Yes, we have a future NBA player on our team.  But there is no question that is a huge selling point that we don't have yet.
