It seems to me that to compete in the Big Ten a team needs at least 8 players with Big Ten level talent.

Have the     Good Chance     Fair Chance     Long Shot    No Chance

Talent Now      Next Year          Next Year       Next Year      Any Year

Petteway                          X

Smith                                X

Biggs                                X

Gallegos (Off bench)        X

Pitchford                                                X

Webster                                                 X

Shields                                                  X

Hawkins                                                                           X

Parker                                                                                                                           X

Rivers                                                                                                                           X

Vooch                                                                                                       X

Wagner                                                                                                    X

Fuller                                                                               X

Hammonds                                            X

So, if I am correct, next year after Gallegos is gone, we will have three players with Big Ten talent, four with a good chance of having the necessary talent and two with a fair chance.

So, lets say for the sake of discussion, that three of the four (which is pretty optimistic) with a good chance indeed develop the necessary talent. That would mean we have six of the eight players we need to compete in a meaningful way.

That would also mean that we would need two more of the four players in the "fair chance" and "long shot" category to develop into Big Ten level players to give us eight.

We have an open scholarship and there may be a couple of tranfers, so an infusion of talent could come in from outside the program.

Bottom line: It looks to me like we have a fair chance of being an 8-8 Big Ten ball team next year but only if we get a post player who can play physical and block some shots

our roster is fine for mid level ambitions. we'll need more horsies to aspire much beyond that. but I'd be thrilled with a mid level finish next year with the guys we should have returning.

I'd be a little caution about the Hammonds kid.  He hasn't played against the best competition.

I agree.  I think too much has been made of his 150 rating.  It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up redshirting and I wouldn't mind that. It's all a hunch on my part, of course.

I'm a little more optimistic about Fuller than Bkamler is.

Why is Rivers a never will and Vooch is given a chance to?  Vooch has looked lost when he has come on the floor albeit mop up duty.  Rivers, while not the best player on the floor, showed some nice things at times last year.

Now: Petteway, Biggs, Smith, Gallegos, Shields, Pitchford

Next Year: Hawkins, Webster, Fuller

Probably never: Vooch, Rivers, Parker, Wagner

Not sure how you can say that Shields and Pitchford are not "B1G level talent" at this point. I understand Pitchford doesn't weigh much but his ability to hit the 3 creates mismatches against other teams bigs.

Shields absolutely has the talent and he proved it last season.

If we finish 8-8 in conference next year, what will happens to the other two games?

When Vooch first got here I thought he could help us at least as a shooter but after watching him play what little he has played I have seen that he is actually slower running the court than Almeada. The other day he shot an air ball from point blank range...an air ball for the love of god! Finally he has grit....he's too laid back to fight like a big needs to.

I had talked to a few managers the other night and they said Fuller has come on very strong in practices the last 4-6 weeks and could of definitely be playing major minutes this year if he didnt redshirt last November.

I went online and facebooked Fuller this past week and asked him how things were going with his redshirt this season and he said really well as he is now at 205lb and strength coach Wilson wants to see him at 215lb by June.  He said he was at 192 when he decided to redshirt last November.

Fuller said it has been hard to watch and not help the team this year, but he sees the big picture in the coming years and expects to be ready to contribute.  He has learned a ton by watching all the games so far and cant wait.

Good news for next year as he will be a freshman with Hammond

Excellent, thanks for sharing!

Given the severity of his injury it'd be a long shot for Tim Wagner to even contribute any meaningful minutes.

I think a column of "unknown" was needed in here.

I am really hoping that Fuller can be deadly from 3. We really need it, among other things.

I'm over our strategy of putting up 3-point attempts. I would really like to see us being more aggressive driving to the basket. We rely far too much on, albeit bad, 3-point shots. Especially toward the end of games.

Coach Smith confirmed on the show tonight, that Fuller has really been playing well since he came back from an extended Christmas break.

I don't understand the question?

Do you mean who can start on the average big 10 team?

Who can make the team for the average team?

Who could get 5 minutes or more at MSU?

Aren't they all on a B1G team?

The question was how many players do we have on this team that have enough talent to "compete" in the Big Ten. Not start out

0  and 4 every year but maybe go 1-3, 2-2, 3-1 or so to start the Big Ten season?
