Creighton Fan Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 I don't think the Minnesota job is as bad as some of you make it out to be. The state produces a fair amount of D1 talent and Minnesota is the ONLY D1 school in the state - no other BCS schools, mid majors or even low majors there. Not too many schools have that situation. hhcmatt, TheGov21 and huskerbaseball13 2 1 Quote
Silverbacked1 Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 Didn't somebody in another thread say that Shaka's wife is from the VCU area and that is one reason he stayed last year? For us old married guys, the old saying "if mama ain't happy nobodies happy" does ring true sometimes. Plus why does he have to move? He has a great paying job, and he is almost always going to make the NCAA because of his conference is getting weaker every day. Why does everybody always have to "move up"? Some guys have "stayed" and made it work very well. Quote

What drops the Minnesota job in a lot of people's eyes is the facilities. It shows a lack of commitment to the program. Fix the facilities and get the right coach and the program could very well be a solid top-half Big Ten team. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 There might not be another big program in the state, but there are plenty of top notch programs in the same vicinity who are more than happy to take players from Minnesota. Quote

Some guys have "stayed" and made it work very well. I don't know about anybody else's wife, but if I had an opprotunity to make a lot more money, my wife would be perfectly fine moving. The thought about him moving would be he'd have a better opprotunity to win a National Title. Whether he could do that at Minnesota is up for debate. I agree with you about not everybody has to move up. I think there are probably some coaches that wished they would have stayed where they were at. But the shot at a bigger school sometimes is too tempting. However Brad Stevens made a wise decision to stay put at Butler. Now with them going to the new Big East, he didn't have to leave his school to go to a high level conference school. Quote

No doubt. However, it is always easier to build a program when your state produces a fair amount of D1 talent and you are fighting to keep kids "at home" rather than having to pull them in from elsewhere. The fact that you don't have anybody instate to battle you means "keeping them at home" means they chose you by default. Quote
Handy Johnson Posted March 26, 2013 Author Report Posted March 26, 2013 Tyus Jones, Reid Travis and Rashad Vaughn are all top 50 recruits located here in the Twin Cities. None have committed, and I wouldn't say any are even leaning toward the Gophers. Izzo flew directly from his game Sat. to Mpls. to watch PG Tyus Jones win the State Title. He has the inside track on both Jones and Vaughn. Too much homegrown talent has went elsewhere during Tubby's tenure, and the players he has kept (Mbakwe,Williams) never improved. Quote
Blackshirt83 Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 I don't see Flip or Shaka going to Minnesota.. If they are smart they will make a run at Gregg Marshall. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 With all that talent there and no one in-state to take it, it's a bad thing for Nebraska if Minnesota gets better. Boooo on them for firing Tubby. We needed him to stay at least another year or two. Quote

Cookie Belcher Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 Shaka Smart and VCU are almost done with a new contract for him. Quote

Swan88 Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 http://twitter.com/SIPeteThamel/status/316629924591054849 Here is an ESPN report on the subject: "Ever since Tubby Smith was fired from Minnesota, and Ben Howland was relieved of his duties at UCLA, it has been assumed that Shaka Smart would be the top candidate to replace both coaches. . . . However, according to Wes McElroy of Sports Radio 910, and subsequently confirmed by Pete Thamel (of Sports Illustrated), Smart and VCU are in the midst of negotiating a long-term contract extension. McElroy notes, "Was told 'Shaka wants to stay here.'" We have to wonder what this news will mean for both high-major conference coaching searches. While there have been reports that Smart would be a top candidate for UCLA, we wrote earlier that there are other coaches -- like Brad Stevens, Billy Donovan, and Rick Pitino -- who are ahead of the VCU coach on UCLA's wish list. The whispers swirling around Smart-potentially-to-Minnesota had been growing louder since Smith was fired, but this reported extension should squash those thoughts." Quote
jamar1700 Posted March 27, 2013 Report Posted March 27, 2013 Press conference link. It's funny to listen to Sid Hartman's questions (really comments) to the A.D. He forgot to put his journalist hat on before he came and instead seems to be offering the A.D. his own opinions. http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/video/8706712-web-extra-press-conference-on-tubby-smith-firing/ Hahahahahaha! It is funny to listen to Sid. Funny peculiar.... You know he is like 152 right? And he has no clue what his hat is or where to put it? And nobody really listens to him any more, ever? Quote

The Polish Rifle Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 Looks like Texas Tech is interested in Tubby. Was just gonna post this, Doc Sadler still in the hunt for the Tech job it appears. Not a good sign for their coaching search. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 I hope Doc lands at Tech. I want to see him coaching again. They could do a whole lot worse than Doc Sadler, that's for sure. Quote

I'd be fine with him landing there, as Doc is good people, but I don't expect it to happen. He has always been so close to Billy G. I don't see Tech going with someone so tight with the last guy who didn't work out. I realize Billy not working out had a lot to do with non-basketball issues, but when programs go through change, they tend to go in a different direction. Doc and Billy have been joined at the hip as friends and basetball-wise for a long time. I don't think that will be helpful to Doc with regard to this specific job. Quote

And they could do a whole lot better than Doc Sadler. Why would he leave the cushy job he has now at KU? If I was him, I'd stay there as long as I could. He wasn't going to get a good coaching job after he got fired from NU so he ended up landing a great gig at KU. He gets to be apart of one of the greatest college basketball programs. Who would want to leave that. Quote

Cazzie22 Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 As Dan Patrick says, "these schools need to be sure they have someone who wants the job before they let go of their coach." Sounds familiar to when Solich was dumped. UCLA is not UCLA anymore. That era is over and even Bill Walton can't seem to understand it. Heard Tubby might be talking to Texas Tech. Quote

Hes in a great spot right now and if he gets the coaching itch again he will have to work his way up starting at a mid major. Quote
