With seasons ending around the country, this will become a hot topic.  We will need to fill out our roster with several impact transfers.  It's going to take a small village  to replace Brice and Juwan.  Let the madness begin with one in our back yard.

So depressing we’re onto portal talk when p5 conf tournaments haven’t even started.

Have we ever been done before boys state basketball had even started?

Our wing depth is pretty much zero right now. Especially with proven experience. Need 2 guys for sure

Frager, while people are hearing good things, is an unknown at this level. As is rhymes. Gavin I'd be shocked if he's back personally. Id start with getting one for sure stud at each spot, wing and PG, and then evaluate the portal/roster and go from there.

Stats only way-early wish list

PG: Dylan Darling (6'1") from Idaho State - 20pts, 3 rebs, 6 asts, 45/37/82. Also gets close to 2 steals. Has shot more free throws than Brice has has this season

Wing: Javan Simmons (6'7") from Toledo - 12 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts, 56/20/75. Has only taken 5 3s so definitely a rim threat. Can afford a non shooter with Rienk being a pick and pop threat

Wing/F: Alvaro Folgueiras (6'9) from Robert Morris - 14pts, 9 rebs, 3 ast, 56/41/78. Also averages over a block and steal a game

Post: Rafael Castro (6'11") from George Washington. 14 pts, 9 rebs, 2 asts, 67/no threes/62. Might not be heavy enough to battle in the post but intriguing given he also averages more than a block and a steal a game

Post: Noah Williamson (7'0") from Bucknell- 17 pts, 8 rebs, 2 asts, 54/32/61, also about a block and steal a game. Also 250 lbs so could probably hold up in conference play

My favorites are Darling and Folgueiras.

It would be helpful if you could put $ amounts next to their names. 😉

Couldn’t have said it any better.

Mast at center (if he’s truly coming back) is about the only thing set.

Sadly it is true. I hope Rienk Mast's back, we certainly need him to be back & better than ever.

I’m sorry but we will need to absolutely flip this roster and pay major $$$ to compete next year. We lose 6 guaranteed, I can’t see GG staying, and I just have a guess based on history one of our redshirts will leave. I could also see guys like Bolis and Jacobsen leave (just seeing writing on the wall and wanting to actually play somewhere).

We’re gonna have to bring in a minimum of 8 guys imo.

agreed but a lot of $$ is freeing up with all the seniors leaving. Just have to prioritize shooting/scoring a bit more than we did last year

Has Fred has been subtly recruiting Josh Dix through press conferences for two years now? Some quotes...

"Hell of a player"

"Most underrated player in our league"

"Future pro"

"Maybe an NBA player"

Hopefully Dix and Sandfort don't like the new coach at Iowa. 😅

I think with the transfer portal you have two options.

Try to find freshman and sophomores who are looking for a fresh start/it didn't work out at their last place. You hope to hit on these but mostly you know you're going to have to continue to develop and find guys who fit the culture you are looking to build.

-- or --

You gotta pay for straight up mercenaries. One year left, full-on dawgs, ready made to win right now.

I don't think Fred has the option to go with the former. It's win next year or he's gone.

Theoretically the former needs to be Connor, Gavin, and Berke, so you are right that it's option 2 this go around.

Yep.

With Mast, Berke, Connor, Gavin - you need to pair that with an athletic, aggressive, paint hunting dawg. Then you need to try to replace Gary with some kind of versatile, athletic, defensive presence. Last I think you need an athletic 3&D guy.

5. Mast

4. Berke

3. Versatile athlete, chaos coordinator

2. Athletic 3&D Guy

1. Paint hunting, aggressive/athletic point guard.

Bring Sam, Connor, Gavin off the bench and hopefully another versatile big and shooter.

Break out the check book this off season or break out the check book next off season to be buying out a fired coach.

Just looking at the last 3 years of transfers on our rosters...

Players from big programs that left for whatever reason:

Juwan Gary (Alabama)

Ahron Ulis (Iowa)

Rollie Worster (Utah)

Braxton Meah (Washington)

Connor Essegian (Wisconsin)

Gavin Griffiths (Rutgers)

Berke Buyuktuncel (UCLA)

C.J. Wilcher (Xavier)

Derrick Walker (Tennessee)

Emmanuel Bandoumel (SMU)

Players that excelled at a lower level and moved up:

Rienk Mast (Bradley)

Brice Williams (Charlotte)

Andrew Morgan (North Dakota State)

Boogie Coleman (Ball State)

Josiah Allick (New Mexico)

Sam Griesel (North Dakota State)

We've been pretty accurate lately in our assessment of guys coming up from the mid-major level. Brice was a grand slam, Rienk was a home run, Griesel and Allick were great pieces, and Andrew Morgan was meh. As for the guys from the power conferences, it seems to be more sporadic in terms of hitting or missing.

Of late, we've had more success with guys moving up from mid majors. I don't think there's an exact formula really, it's about finding the right fit. I lean towards the mid major under this current climate personally.

The staff as a whole outside of this last cycle, has been pretty on the money with who they've brought in and those guys making positive impacts. The PG duo from last year in ulis and boogie was a disaster, but they were options 4 and 5 iirc. I'm looking forward to some of these guys getting better in the off-season after a taste of basketball here. Portal wise, we'll see what it holds. JUCO ruling could inflate it a bit, but there's the revenue share part that could hold some guys.
