Norm Peterson Posted July 7, 2023 Report Posted July 7, 2023 1. Anyone going? Fans I'm talking about. The AD put together a package I think about 3,000 bucks to join the team and go everywhere they go. Anyone jump at that one? For the record, I did not. 2. Nice to see Brice Williams made it to town, but he's going to be behind everyone else on being in basketball shape and picking up the offense and defense prior to Spain trip. Hopefully we get some sense of what he can do. 3. Sounds like Keisei is doing Japanese Olympic stuff while Rienk is doing Dutch basketball stuff and won't be making the trip. Does anyone know of anyone else, though, who won't be going or won't be available? Sounds like Juwan Gary is either 100% or close. Allick had some kind of toe surgery? Anyone know his status? Anyone else in the "out" or "doubtful" category? 4. Do all the players have all their passports together this time? Quote
49r Posted July 7, 2023 Report Posted July 7, 2023 I remember 4 years ago (or was it 5?) when they went on the Italy trip I was so hyped and watched all the games and getting excited... ...and now it's a big yawn for me. I might watch the games if they are streamed but won't be going out of my way to do so. Actually traveling to watch this isn't even remotely on the radar for me. So, the short of the long here @Norm Peterson is no. I will not be going. Quote

throwback Posted July 7, 2023 Report Posted July 7, 2023 I thought a few weeks ago Fred said all three bigs - Keita, Gary & Allick - were still rehabbing and may or may not be ready for game action by then. Consequently, we may not have much size available for the games. Worst case scenario we might have 6 scholarship guys cleared to play / in attendance - or 7 with Sam, who I assume will be getting a scholarship at some point with us only being at 11. For their sakes, I'm glad Tominaga and Mast can play with their nat'l teams this summer, but the short roster really puts a damper on the trip for the benefit of NU. Quote

OK, with that in mind, I'm working out a starting lineup for Spain. Check this: PG Ahron Ulis SG Jamarques Lawrence SF Ramel Lloyd, Jr. PF Brice Williams C CJ Wilcher OK, tell me ONE THING Rienk Mast has that CJ Wilcher lacks. OK, besides that. Well, I mean, OK, but other than that, too. Listen, CJ has a big body. He can DO this! He'll go into the season as our heir-apparent at Center. Kinda by default, but, y'know, still ... Go CJ!!! throwback 1 Quote

I am assuming both players negotiated playing for their National team as part of the package to play for good ol NU.. So I certainly do not blame the players. I am also of the opinion that we don't have the leverage or lineage that some programs likely have in order to say no. Edited July 13, 2023 by Huskerpapa Woody Boyd, HuscurAdam and thrasher31 3 Quote

I can't disagree with this take more. Representing your country on the world stage is the highest career goal for many players. They're not about to give that up to play some college exhibition games, nor should they. I have a feeling if Keisei had to choose between forgoing international play or not returning to DONU, I don't think it would work out too well for us. We're don't exactly have the high ground as a program to make those demands. Quote
jimmykc Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 As long as they do not get injured, I'm sure the quality of competition they face will be better than what we see in Spain so it should be a better chance to improve their personal skill development. HuscurAdam and Handy Johnson 1 1 Quote

What they miss out on is the opportunity to bond with their teammates and develop cohesion on the floor. It takes awhile to figure out how the new faces fit in and for players to settle into their roles. We're a better team in November and December if some of that happens in Spain in July and August. This foreign trip, we're a bit hamstrung in that regard because of the short roster. But we probably don't have a very difficult non-con so it probably won't matter much. Quote

hhcmatt Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 I believe Hoiberg attributed some of the success of Keisei last season to his experience playing for the Japanese National team in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup. Faux Mike Peltz 1 Quote
