Delving into this PSU thing a little further: Rothstein projects two UNC transfers to leap into the PSU starting lineup.

Puff Johnson spent 3 seasons at UNC. As a junior (Covid sophomore) he only commanded 16 minutes and scored 4 ppg at UNC. But he'll start at PSU? D'Marco Dunn played just 10 min/game and scored 2.7 ppg his sophomore year at UNC last year. But Rothstein projects him as a starter too.   I mean, if they were freshmen and didn't contribute much, I could see them blossoming somewhere else. And maybe they'll be all that. But their historical performance so far wouldn't afford much basis for that kind of projection.

Would agree with the above...we need a softer schedule to put together this roster in addition to getting some Ws on Hoiberg's resume. Whether or not this comes back to bite us tourney time depends on how the conference ranks.

I'm all for a challenging non-conference schedule but doesn't do us any good if you lose all the difficult games which we did last year.  At this point, Fred needs W's and gain this team some confidence.  We can help our SOS once we get to conference play.  The downside is you can't afford to lose any games to teams with 200+ or 300+ KenPom ratings.

We're gonna have one of the worst non-con strength of schedule in the nation this year.

Well we had one of the best last year and that didn't help us one bit. This year's group needs the non-con to build chemistry and confidence, so I'm good with feasting on cupcakes, at least for this year. That said, it would be nice to have just one more game vs a P5 or solid mid-major team at home.

I don’t think we are in any position to call any non-conference foe a cupcake. Too many times the cupcakes have emerged victorious.  We need success early and often.

Houston had the #1 NET last year despite a much weaker SOS than their P5 peers. Iona, Drake and Yale played a combined 2 less Quad 1/2 games than Nebraska, and won a combined 6 vs Nebraska's 8, and all finished 30 spots ahead of us in the NET. The NET made scheduling tough irrelevant.

The key is margin of victory. We need to beat the bad teams badly. Keeping the scores close when we lose is big too. All of the double-digit losses last year overshadowed the close wins over good teams.
