He wasn't going to count against us next year anyways. He's just taking a shot on trying to play one more year. Probably at a mid major.

Wondering for the sake of wondering if he'd count as a scholarship here if he received the medical redshirt and stayed.

All this talk about who stays/goes.

Listen: It's year 4. You're Fred Hoiberg. You kept your job for another year, but there are no more do-overs. It's put up or shut up time.

You do not have the luxury of taking on a project.

You do not have the luxury of keeping a project.

You must find a way to win in year 4.

Anyone on the current roster who isn't a sure bet to make the rotation next season needs to go.

Try to keep your best recruits (you can't go entirely scorched earth because, in the event there's a season 5, you don't want to have to do this all over again.)

Identify your biggest needs and hit the remaining uncommitted recruits as hard as you can, along with the transfer portal once it opens in full swing.

You need:

The best available scorer

The best available pure shooter

The best available rebounder

The best available ball-handler/distributor

You better hope you can catch fricking lightning in a bottle.

Yup was just thinking about Walker at the 4.  The way he shot FTs there makes it seem possible he could live a bit on the perimeter.

If Blaise Keita is as good as advertised, then it's a matter of working backwards from there.

Been saying that about Walker at the 4 for awhile as well.

My source still says that both Walker and Trey are 50/50 to come back.

Both are in a great position for next season as they are guaranteed starters along with being team leaders.

Really might come down to NIL money available for them both.

Everyone is trying to solve our problems with players when in reality the problem is and has always been the coaching. Recruitniks understand recruiting because it is easier to understand than what it takes to be competitive and win. Winning for next season happens during the off season. It happens in the gym and weight room when no one is watching. It takes discipline, accountability, and attention to detail. It can be boring and is definitely a grind. It takes efficient use of time by the coaches for the limited amount of practices they are allowed.

I'm not a huge fan of Lat, however I don't want to see him leave. I certainly don't want to see Tominaga leave. He is your quintessential bench player and we are going to need those. Having those guys back is stabilizing to a program that needs stabilization. New players who come in and won't have to look around the floor to see who is in charge.

We need this team to stay as intact as possible. What I saw this team accomplish the last couple of weeks of the season, even with out Bryce, was very telling. For FH to keep his job I think all he has to do is keep us out of the Wednesday game of the B1G Tourney. He needs to keep us competitive throughout the season minus the occasional blowout loss which happens even to the best teams.

When I look at our roster the only real need we have is to get a PG. A stretch 4 is a bonus but we can make due with our current roster.

The coaching moves made by FH are going to be extremely important and I'm far more interested in that as it will tell us something about the direction FH has envisioned.

Matt A. leaving is important as it signals that FH is going to be more deeply involved in recruiting. It also tells me that his replacement will actually be a more active coach.

If FH can keep most of the pieces of this team together that would be huge. Coaches often don't have a lot of control over that. I'm OK with Lakes leaving, however I want the core returning players to stay, most importantly Walker and Trey. They are going to be leaders and we are going to need leaders on this team. We are going to need guys who battled through this season, where knocked down and got back up again.

Can confirm, Matt's wife pops up, but not Matt.

You might have that backwards....

But then again, maybe not. I've heard 44 has that problem.  😉

You have two separate situations withtTrey and DW.  DW  is likely ending his basketball career when he leaves here...correct?  He is working towards his graduate degree and already has started a business.  His education is now free and the NIL money will assist him in building his future without debt.  That is quite  a luxury. I suggest he will take advantage of the situation if at all possible.

Trey wants to continue with basketball.  If Bryce is back, Trey is back.  If Bryce leaves, Trey will likely weigh his basketball options.  Stay here, or go pro which includes possible NBA looks.  His tenacity, his athleticism and his prowess on the defensive end will earn him a look.

If he comes back, it will be to further hone his offensive skillset.   Right now his long and mid-range game is fairly pedestrian.   If he can improve those two elements of his game and maintains his ability to slash...then I can see him playing in the league with his brother after next season.  Heck, if Banton can do it, I sure think Trey can as well.

I have a couple of irons in the fire that would lead me to postulate we have a replacement lined up.

Recruits, that's another story.

Having a replacement lined up already would be excellent. Mark Hsu is one I know we were in on when Fred first came, but went elsewhere
