Perhaps the most amazing aspect of this signing is that this 6'10" guy seemingly drops out of nowhere into Fred's lap without a word or report of him mentioned by any of the media gurus or on this board which usually mentions anyone remotely interested in NU. This staff certainly plays things close to the vest when they want to. Probably to hide prospects from the Hurleys.

Robin said in his article that Fred and his staff deliberately didn’t let any info out about him until Monday night after he had already committed to them. You have to think they felt too much info got out with Sanogo that they wanted to protect this one.

...and already some here have him penciled into the starting lineup as a major impact guy.   I'd imagine that by the end of the week we'll probably be talking all Big Ten honors and early draft entry...

Ha!

Here's the deal: had we known about Eduardo Andre and been discussing him for three months (or a couple years) already, we'd have been to the "early draft entry" stage long before now.  And had Hoiberg & Co. been openly battling the likes of Illinois, A&M and Northwestern, we'd be breathless with our victory over Power 5 suitors.

Remember when names first came up like Whitt and Sanogo?   We were all doubters at the beginning . . . and then we watched old videos and saw other schools competing for their services . . . and we ultimately came to see them as great prospects.  That didn't happen here.

So, we are just now coming to understand this player and what he will bring to the Vault.

Frankly, I'm excited by the potential: (i) his hands are a huge upgrade (compare, e.g., Morrow, Jordy, and even Yvan), (ii) his mobility is a rarity at the five, (iii) he can elevate quickly, once the ball is in his hands, (iv) he is new to the game but has a solid foundation for it.

Can't wait for practices and the season to start!

P.S.  Hoiberg & Co. excel at the short-time recruiting process, and they seem to prefer it over a long process.  Sanogo and Andre are Exhibits A & B on why that is.

If things got out, they were worried other teams would negative recruit or try to jump in late? All of the above?

I guess I don’t follow regarding Sanogo. He was a pretty big recruit so it’s not like we can keep him under the radar.

He had insinuated after Sanogo that things in the local media didn’t help their standing with him.

My guess is that if HOL, OWH, or the LJS Got  stuff out about going after Andre that similar actions could have derailed that for them this time around.

I think he and Stevenson are similar athletes in that they are of average explosiveness with very long arms.  Not complaining!  He's certainly athletic enough and his height looks legit.  I think he's a steal.  I wouldn't call him better than Sanogo, but he's definitely taller/longer and more of a true 5/rim protector/shot alterer, which we didn't have on the roster until Eduardo committed.

Stevenson has much better than average explosiveness.

He has a 7’ wingspan.  That’s a 6+ inch advantage in vertical.  I think he’s very athletic, but an explosive leaper isn’t how I would personally describe his athleticism.  He’s reaching up to the rim, not looking down at.  Just my .02.

As long as he blocks shots like Mikki Moore, rebounds like Venson Hamilton, plays post defense like Derrick Chandler, has the offensive post skills of Tony Farmer, has the ball handling skills of Isaac Copeland, runs the floor like Isaiah Roby, has the attitude and court awareness of Brandon Ubel, and shoots the three like Brian Conklin; well, then, I'll be happy.

Throwing Andre out there against Elliot Elliason gave Elliot bad flashback memories of when Zach Sterup beat the hell out of him on the same floor a few years earlier.

Same.  One of the best nights of Husker Hoops watching I can ever recall.  To top it off, I got to meet a lot of these fine folks at the HHC pregame party that night.  Tremendous night all around.

I should have just read the Sanogo thread first. I’m caught up now. The timing of Heady’s article was not ideal, and who knows what a 17-year-old uses to make important life choices. Sounds like he was a Seton Hall commit regardless.

Did we have four quarters then in college men's games? I must have also disremembered this. And did anyone keep their Senor mustache as a souvenir? And I have totally forgotten Maverick Ahanmisi.

No, there are no quarters in men's college hoops. . . there is in the women's game.

From Shamiel's bio at Pitt:

The Storyline
  • An explosive athlete with the leaping ability and strength to finish in traffic
  • Showed the ability to play as a big wing or undersized four-man a year ago ... can create matchup problems with his combination of size, quickness and athleticism
  • Has a nice shooting stroke out beyond the three-point line as well as the ability to put the ball on the floor
  • Possesses a 40 inch vertical and a 6-11 wingspan … strength and quickness allow him to be an effective defender and rebounder against bigger opponents
  • Continued improvement with intensity and attention to detail in practice will lead to increased minutes
  • Enrolled in Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences

Well, that is a hair more explosive than my abilities but to each their own in passing judgement 😀

Yeah I remember reading that.  Certainly hope it's accurate.  The vertical jump can be manipulated pretty easily, but I'll concede with the evidence rather than my eyes. A true 40 inch vert at 6'6" would put his eyes right at the rim when he's dunking, fwiw, and that's with a one step takeoff.  It's an enormous vertical leap.
