uneblinst's postgame chatter: vol 16; ed 28- Minnesota

It just doesn't look like this team does much to get a lead. But then you look up and they are up 20 pts.

We cannot drop a home game to NET #89 or a road game against NET #122. So, even if we beat Ohio State, I'm gonna still feel like we've got to avoid any bad losses.

    Both are Quad 2 right?

This team has a lot of the same things working for it like the good Nee teams did.

The run that the 90-91 team had was exhilarating! Did that team care as little as this year’s team about who was scoring big each night? I seem to remember different guys having big nights regularly. I think that’s a huge strength of this year’s team too. And hopefully when it’s crunch time the right player will step up at the right time. GBR!

I don’t think there’s a problem between them. They both look to get their own shots first. But Keisei threw a lob to Brice and he got fouled and went to the line on the play. They each like to hunt their own shots, but they are team players and I don’t see any animosity between them.

OK, good, glad to know. Thanks!

No. Rutgers would be a Quad 3 game. Must win. Cannot pick up a Quad 3 L at this point. And losing to #122 anywhere would look bad.

They beat us at home may put them as a Quad 2, but I get what you are saying

That was the best defensive performance I have seen in a long time.

The guys were flying around and made Minnesota earn every point.

We did a tremendous job limiting Garcia and Hawkins.

    Gary had a phenomenal night.

He shot the ball with a lot of confidence.

We easily could have scored 85+ points if we hit some shots we usually make.

This team is so much fun to watch.

    Go Big Red!

Guys, this iteration of Rutgers isn't beating this team at home, on Senior night.

    I hear you, in theory.

We've also never won 7 consecutive conference games in the 21st century. And our goal is to clean out the rest of the regular season. Is it possible? Yes. But any conference game isn't guaranteed.

It was just 2 seasons ago that a 8-21 (2-16) Nebraska basketball team won at #23 Ohio State and at #10 Wisconsin in back-to-back road conference games.

I know we won and I don't want to throw a damper on that, but this seems to be a recurring theme on the season: Keisei doesn't seem to like to pass to Bryce and Bryce doesn't seem to like to pass to Keisei. Neither assisted on a made shot for the other today. And there were times where they each made a harder play when the easier play and higher percentage play would have been to the other.

Stop it, guys. There's too much riding on this season. The offense stops when the ball stops in one guy's hands.

I noticed around the under 5 mark in the 1st half , there was a possession that Keisei was doing his curry impression with Brice wide open at the 3 off the elbow and Brice just shook his head, like he knew no matter what KT is putting it up. Than after that Sota put up back to back points on KT and Gary was kinda yelling at this direction. Could be something, could be nothing but it’s def something that could bite us in March.. the 14 team didn’t really have this problem I don’t think, shields respected Petteways heat checks, and petteway knew shields was his automatic secondary go to, with Walter available in the corner.

This team is the best defensive group in the Big Ten, plus they legit have 7 different dudes who can be the offensive guy any given night. It's beautiful basketball, even if shots don't go down early on, the defense holds serve. I love it.

Trust me on this. That team had more internal issues than this team does. I won’t go into too many specifics, but you had a mix of older players trying to quickly gel with the transfers Miles had brought in. Gallegos was used to getting many more shots than he did that year, a few players that had played larger roles the previous were largely relegated to the bench, and a player got kicked off the team during the season. But going on that hot streak cured a lot of issues. This team has a guy who transferred here under the assumption that last year’s top scoring threat wasn’t coming back, but then he did come back. So they’ve had to adjust and gel. The last few games, KT and Brice have communicated quite a bit, even just the two of them. They hunt shots, yes. But I think Norm’s observation about tonight was accurate. Let’s hope it was just a blip.

@AuroranHusker, hold your head up brother. You're not alone in the struggle my friend. And don't apologize for nuthin'! This place has done the same for me as it is for you, and for that, I'm grateful.

This is what a good internet community can do when stuff's working right.

Also, if for any reason you have any issue with pain medicines and need any help or assistance, this is what I do for a "living" so feel free to PM me if needed.

Thanks, brother. Together, we got this. My kid will eventually be all right, it's harder on the parents, I think; our kids are pretty resilient. 👊

Tough Nebraskans get tougher when times get tougher. 💪

There's probably still something there. There certainly was earlier in the season, but you can't see it as much through the television so I haven't noticed it these past handful of games. And winning helps everyone's attitude become more positive. This is on Brice to just get over it imo. We need Keisei to do what he does. As an opposing coach, trying to get your guys to sprint and chase Keisei around screens consistently over the course of a game scares you just as much as Zach Edey does. CJ plays similarly but I've never seen Brice scoff at him. Just get over it, man. Keisei is an unselfish kid who wants to win. He's genuinely happy whenever someone else makes a play. And he's the one guy on the team who consistently is willing to give up his body and attempt to take charge when an opposing player is barreling down the lane.

Anyway, on a positive note we have a really, really good basketball team right now. We are finally looking like Hoiberg's Iowa State teams when they were as fun to watch as anyone in the country. Fred finally has the players who are willing to run and execute his stuff, and the counters to that stuff, and the counters to those counters. And it's beautiful to watch. We can beat you a number of different ways offensively. We have four guys averaging 12+ ppg, and two more guys off the bench who can get hot and go for 20. And the other two guys in the rotation are hometown kids who will pour their blood, sweat and tears into every possession. And if nothing is going right offensively, we can now beat you in a dogfight with our team defense. No coach will be excited about playing Nebraska in March.

I've been saying it for two weeks, just "WIN OUT"! A lot of great things will have been accomplished with a lot of great things still ahead of them in the BTT & beyond. GBR!

That's what I expected from Hoi-ball from the jump, I am so glad that Freddy was given the chance to remain at NU and figure his shit out. It's been a thing of beauty to watch, and I am hoping to see some historic stuff accomplished real, real soon. GBR Always.

To your last point, I've mentioned this in multiple places and can't always remember who I've told, so bare with me if you've heard this, BUT ...

I feel like this would be a REALLY difficult team to prepare for on a two-day turnaround. Say, Saturday or Sunday in the first weekend of the NCAA tourney.

I say this for two reasons: 1) similar to what you observed, we have 7 guys who can legitimately pop off from 3-point range, and a couple of guys who can score inside, along with 3 guys who are really solid mid-range scorers, and you're going to have to work hard on defense to shut us down; and 2) some people might call it a "junk" defense, but it's certainly not a defense that teams would see a lot and it's really effective at running teams off the 3-point line but still keeping them out of the paint.

If we somehow make it to the dance and win in the first round, the team that faces us in the round of 32 has their work cut out for them. It's one thing to watch this group on film; it's another thing to actually try to execute against us. We lack high end athleticism, so we're not invincible. But, in terms of scheme, if you haven't faced us yet, and you just got done putting away Middle Tennessee State, and now you have two days to prepare for whoever's on the other side of the bracket and it's us? Well, good luck with that.

I guess I see what you're saying, but keisei was basically being smothered all game. I saw Brice look his way when running off screens, but no opening and moved onto the next read. Didn't knock down any of his 3s, which one or two had to have come off passes from Brice without remembering, and all of his shots were self created.

They were also throwing doubles at keisei on dhos forcing him to pass to a big underneath or allick in the corner. Good gamelan by ben Johnson to shut the water off from him. Force him to create his own shot and don't give him C&S opportunities. He did have a lob pass to Brice at the rim which would've been an assist had he finished it, but got fouled. I saw keisei point in his direction afterwards as if to say "I got you" after the play. There may have been opportunities to look each other's way more often, but the gamelan they had was working, and it led to a 20 point win.

I don't see much animosity between them personally, but I don't pay that close of attention to stuff like that.

Well that was a fun one to be at.  Those 2 hour drives back are a little rough though.  A few notes from me.

    - There were a couple of times where I thought the roof was going to blow off the place.  We missed the big shot, but overall crowd was great.

    - To overcome the shooting start we had was big and the way we did it was partly due to D.  We certainly made the gophers uncomfortable and didn’t give them many clean looks.

    - Being in house, I didn’t notice the refs much yesterday which was a good thing.  Surprised to see so many comments about them this morning.  I thought they were consistent (for the most part) at least which is all I ask.  There was only once (on an and-1 drive for Minny in the 1st half followed by a KT drive and no call) where I was upset.

    - Happy that Fidone didn’t blow an ACL at half and wouldn’t mind seeing the dude who won the dunk contest do one of those over the goal posts after a pick-6 this year lol.

    - I thought Ben was relatively calm considering what was on the line for Minny.

-Huge kudos to the students.  Our Students really are great for not being known as a basketball school.  They’re loud, keep the energy, and the “NIT” chant made me laugh (even though the NIT probably saved Johnson’s job) lol.

    - The OSU game now is really a “nothing to lose” type of game.  We’ve already assured ourselves a .500 conference finish.  We can beat OSU but it won’t be easy.

    - This team man.  Love them.  Love the fact that we can beat you with multiple players.  Love the fact that we can beat you inside at times and from outside.

    - KT had a struggle game.  CJ couldn’t get going.  But Gary and Williams picked up the slack and it was never in doubt after we pulled away.
