I see the front lines of Maryland and Purdue and I cringe. The middle of the Conference seems a little soft, but we will be presented with match-up problems throughout. We would need to steal a couple "surprises" at home and have some Freshman get their sea legs fast, but I don't need to be talked off the ledge quite yet...

Can we? Yes.  But, we would likely have to win out at home as we have not been a good road team under Miles and that will probably remain true this year with all of the young guys.

We need to beat Northwestern and get off to a good start.  Win that one, and then we can worry about whoever we play next.  Can we get to .500 in the league?  Perhaps, but things could also go very bad...remember, we do not have a post presence.  That is going to be exploited by the coaches in this league.  We have to find a way around that glaring problem.

We do play Purdue twice but we only play Maryland, Iowa, Michigan St, and Michigan once.

We play Rutgers, Minnesota, and Penn St twice.

We're not a great team but we do play a very soft B1G schedule.

And we play NW twice.  Yes, they are much, much improved, but still better than facing Maryland, Mich State, Michigan twice IMO.

There is no reason we can not compete with Rutgers, Penn State, Minnesota and Illinois for last place this year but we have to win 2 or 3 of the next 4 games to not finish last. Unfortunately losing tends to become accepted or even expected once the losses begin to pile up and we have to win a few of the next ones in order to not do this. I think we can forget about .500 already.

Per the OWH...

"The current Big Ten skid is 11 games — the final nine last season and the first two this season.

That is believed to be the second-longest in school history. World-Herald research shows a 13-game skid, encompassing the last six Big Six Conference games in 1943-44 and the first seven in 1944-45, as the longest. There was a 10-game streak in 1963-64 (last four) and 1964-65 (first six)."

One of those 11 games was a conference tourney game. I'm not sure of the semantics rules on this one.

Luckily we have Rutgers/Minnesota coming up if we can't pull out the unlikely victory tonight.  Have to think we can find a way to get back in the W column soon...right?

Rutgers on the road won't be an easy out regardless of how bad they are though you gotta think we grit through and win.

I just don't see this team falling apart like last year

Well.... we're off to an 0-3 start, Rutgers and Minnesota are absolute MUST wins if we want to keep the NIT dream alive (Yes I just typed that). We drop those two and things will go South in a hurry.

I honestly believe the next 3 games (Rutgers, Minnesota, Illinois) are winnable games and then things get tougher again.  Would be nice to get back to .500 in conference play but even if we win those three, the next games would be:  Michigan St, Michigan, Purdue and Maryland.....OUCH

If they can maintain their current level of play, at a minimum, and hopefully incrementally improve, they may have a shot, which 3 games ago I was thinking it might be a scramble to get to 5 conf. wins.  Granted the last 3 games haven't been against the cream of the league crop, but the way they've won (2 blowouts and a fairly convincing win against a decent Illinois team on the road) is very promising.  Webster, Watson, Morrow, Jacobson & McVeigh have picked up their play considerably lately which takes some of the pressure off White & Shields.  Stay consistent with this level of play and they should be very competitive going forward.
