Silverback said it in another thread, and I agree with him, I think Miles needs to pat a few more backs and scream a bit less. He just unleashes on those guys. I hated that when I played. I know I turned it over, you don't need to yell at me telling me I turned it over like he did at Benny and Fuller tonight. Benny looked like he was about ready to punch Miles tonight.

Miles obviously knows his players better, but surely not all of his players prefer getting screamed at rather than sat down and taught.

How did this effect how things played out tonight?

That was like a whole rollercoaster of a season all packed into a single game, no?

We came out focused, got a big lead, and all of a sudden we're in la-de-da land again, looking around and letting a team get back in it...and all of a sudden a terrible shooting team starts hitting 18 footers and it's a tight game. Looks like we made the right adjustments in the second half.

Boy, Shavon has that 14-15 foot jumper down, doesn't he? He also was money from the FT line tonight.

Andrew once again with a quiet 19. I had to double check early in the game to see if he was in there.

Watson got the start but really had sort of a passive just out there night that we, including me, kill Benny for. Shavon ripped him a new one on the way to the locker room for that end of the half pass fail through 3 defenders. I have a feeling he bounces back vs Northwestern

Benny came out firing last night and had a great stat line of 8 points, 4 assists, and 0 turnovers in 22 minutes. Some teams block shots and some teams don't. Gotta have Benny be more aggressive scoring against a team like this that doesn't block shots.

Jacobson: 21 minutes, 1 Foul
Morrow: 12 minutes, 3 Fouls
Hammond: 5 minutes, 3 Fouls

We're already a team that fouls too much. That's why Hammond is coming onto the court with 14 minutes to go in the game. He followed up those 3 fouls with a bunny hairball and missing 2 FTs.  This guy needs a holiday break big time. Ed had himself a decent game in those 12 minutes. I know he might be limited offensively but doesn't it seem like he's often in the right position for a back door pass or oop to the basket?

McVeigh: The stats show that he poured in 9 points on 3 shot attempts. They don't show some of the weird stuff he did like having a wide open shot 1 foot from the rim and firing it out to the 3 point line.  Freshmen!

Tai looked good tonight. I want to believe that this is a continuation of New York City Tai and not Beats Up on Bad Opponents Tai. There was no crowd in NYC and it was a library in the Vault tonight. How much does intense noise effect Tai?

Nick was solid until he had a bad turnover + bad defense play that pretty much banished him to the bench. WTF was that 3 point airball?  At least he was aggressive in garbage time.

No idea when but doesn't it seem like Johnny Trueblood will contribute 5-10 minutes stretches of relevance at some point in his career here?

Postgame Notes
*-Nebraska started a pair of freshman for the fourth time in Tim Miles’ four seasons, as Glynn Watson Jr. joined Michael Jacobson in the starting lineup. The last time NU started two freshman was on Feb. 22, 2015, against Iowa. The other two instances came during the 2012-13 season.
*- Nebraska’s 81 points marks the Huskers’ fourth 80-point performance of the season and first since scoring 82 against Tennessee on Nov. 27.
*-Nebraska shot 50 percent from the field, including 56 percent in the second half. It was the third time NU shot 50 percent or better this season.
*-Nebraska’s 17 assists was the team’s second-highest total of the year and most since having 19 against Delaware State.
*-Nebraska got 30 points from its best, its highest total since scoring 48 against Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 22
*-Tai Webster’s three steals was a season high (previous high two on four occasions).
*-Nebraska outscored Prairie View A&M, 48-16, in the final 17:33
after Prairie View A&M took a one-point lead.
*-Ed Morrow Jr. had a career-high and team-high six rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench. Morrow’s previous high was five on four previous occasions.

Nebraska Head Coach Tim Miles

On the team’s confidence level heading into this game
“I think in our pregame radio show I told Kent (Pavelka) that you don’t shake out of these losses quickly and easily like we had against Samford. Sometimes there’s this period where you still feel like you’re at the dentist office, like I’m not done with this root canal yet. I thought we relaxed in the first half when they went on the big 16-0 run. I think it was a 20-5 run, but it was fueled by turnovers again. It was the same mistakes but I thought we came out and cleaned it up in the second half and were better with the ball. I wish I could point to one guy but you can’t. We spread out those nine turnovers amongst seven guys. We just got to keep getting better or they’re going to be in great shape through practice. We run for every turnover, either we really like the treadmill or we are sharing the ball too much.”

On the defensive intensity in the second half

“I thought we were better on the ball. We were good on the ball early. Against Samford I thought we were good on the ball early as well and then as we didn’t score we really relaxed. We’ve got to really ride out that defensive intensity and make it pay for us on the other end. You need to get some quick easy shots and some stuff in transition. I thought the second half it was really critical once it got to 33-34 the guys really locked in. I don’t know if they called timeout or we did. I think they did. They had a kid limping around. Benny (Parker) was really vocal in that timeout and then went out and played accordingly.”

On the rotation going forward

“I think with this team right now we are still finding our way. I think I’m going to keep the starting guards the way they are right now. I’m going to let that ride out for a while. I think I feel comfortable with that. Jack (McVeigh) has struggled shooting the last five games. But Jack still does a lot of things right. I’d like him to score more. He’s a smart player; he has a great mind for the game so he brings a lot of intangibles to the game even if he’s not making shots. The post rotation is going to be Michael (Jacobson) and Ed (Morrow Jr.) and then when Jake (Hammond) comes back around we will see where he fits in from there.”

On the confidence level of the team heading into conference play

“First off, I believe in my guys. Things were bad the other night and I’m not going to divorce them when it’s bad and then remarry them when it’s good. But we need to get better and we need to get better in a lot of ways, not just defensively but offensively.  We need to have better resilience. We will allow teams to go on big runs. We will also go on big runs.  You can’t allow that in the Big Ten and the competition is hot and heavy and it’s going to come at you hard and fast.”

Junior Guard Andrew White III
On the ups and downs of the game and what led to Prairie View’s first-half comeback…

“They had confidence. There’s a lot of good teams out here. A lot of well-coached guys. I think teams just bring it. When people come into Pinnacle Bank Arena, everybody’s trying to get a win. For a lot of the opponents we’ve had, so far, this has been some of the best atmospheres they’ve been in. It’s just a game that everybody circles on their schedule, so that’s why we see teams at their best every night.”

On what gave the Huskers the spark in the second half to put Prairie View away…

“Togetherness. We had a meeting this week, and we were talking about holding everybody accountable for what they do on and off the court. We really stressed togetherness. In this profession, coaches are going to get on guys, but it’s our job, as a team, to pick guys up. I think by us having a slow first half, it really tested our togetherness, so I think we made a lot of strides in that aspect. That helped us get our feet under us and have a breakout second half. That’ll be something more crucial for games going forward than just the game today.”

On the team’s confidence heading into Big Ten play…

“I think everybody’s kind of neutral right now, honestly. When you end your first school semester and you’re heading into Big Ten play, I don’t think your non-conference schedule should have you too high or too low. We’ve had some decent wins and some bad losses, so I think when you get into conference play it’s like a new season, its zero-and-zero. I think everybody should have a neutral mindset so that those who have played well up until this point aren’t too high on themselves and those that have not played well are not too down on themselves. I think that’s the best approach to have going into a tough conference schedule like we’re going to get into.”

Junior Guard Tai Webster
On Coach Tim Miles’ message at halftime…
“It was just that we put ourselves in the position that we were in and that it was up to us to come out and play like we know we can play. Just focus on doing the little things well and just come out with effort and togetherness.”

On Coach Miles’ halftime attitude…
“I wouldn’t say he was upset. It was more supportive more than anything. He just wanted us to play like we know we can play and just try to get everyone on the same page.”

On if the team was mad or frustrated that Prairie View was as close as they were at halftime…
“I wouldn’t say mad. They’re a good team at the end of the day. They have a lot of good individual players on their team. It really showed, at that one point, when they started going. It really showed what they can do. They stuck around with some good teams. I wouldn’t say we were mad that they were where they were, just more… if anything, just mad at ourselves and mad that we put ourselves in that position.”

On his defensive performance in the second half…
“I felt like I was kind of, in the first half, just floating around not really doing anything. It’s been my thing for a while to get it started on the defensive end, so I just try to focus on that. Obviously it came around on the other end.”

Prairie View A&M Head Coach Byron Rimm II

Opening Statement

“Poorly played game by Prairie View. We didn’t adjust to certain things, and we didn’t play hard and just didn’t listen. I’m very disappointed in how we played and that’s kind of been an ongoing thing all year. We’ve been staying close with a lot of big teams and the second half, they’ve been beating us up and blowing us open in the second half. We’ve got to figure out a way to get better.”

On senior forward Karim York’s performance

“Right now he’s doing a pretty good job. He’s six-foot-nine, he can lift and he’s a mismatch for a lot of teams that we play against and he’ll be a mismatch hopefully in our conference.”

On moving forward after this loss

“It’s a bad loss so try to improve and just move on.”

I do agree with the point about Miles backing off a little bit on the screaming at the kids during the games.   Generally that is not something that bothers me but it does seem like we have too many guys that play like they are too scared to make a mistake.   Tai is one that seems to go into a funk at times when Miles blows up at him.  That was what happened at the Samford game and I think there was some carryover to this one - but in the second half Tai made a really good pass to Andrew and all the sudden he was energized and was the one that really keyed the blowout in the 2nd half.   Lots of people criticize Tai and he does deserve it at times - but when he is playing well he is clearly our 3rd best player overall in my view.   We need the "good Tai" to be there more often and that happens when he plays aggressively and takes chances.   We can't have him playing like he is afraid to make mistakes because then he is simply not effective.

With one large exception I do like the quotes from Miles about the rotations going forward.   We need to focus on a 3 man rotation at the 2 guard spots with  Benny, Glynn and Tai.  Personally I would start Glynn and Tai and give them the bulk of the minutes with Benny being the sparkplug off the bench he was two years ago.  Miles says he plans to keep starting Benny and Glynn which I don't understand because I think Benny is so much more effective coming off the bench and Tai is the most mentally fragile of the three.   At the 5 spot you rotate Jacobson and Morrow using Hammond only in emergencies.   We are not going to get great production out of that spot but as we saw for FAR too long against Samford we are simply awful without at least one of the post players on the floor.  Morrow is another kid that seems to play as if he is scared to make a mistake - we need to get him enough minutes to get more comfortable on the floor and give him some confidence.   At the other two spots you get as many minutes as you possible can from Shields and White and then fill in with McVeigh and maybe Fuller a little bit.   McVeigh hit a 3 toward the end of the game which might get him some confidence back in his shot I hope.  Fuller drives me kind of crazy.  He seems to always be around the ball and involved in plays when he is in the game.  Sometimes can't finish but last night had a couple nice finishes with his off hand in the 2nd half.  But then you have things like him having a wide open look in the 1st half and throwing up an airball that really was not even close to the basket.  Kid is supposed to be a shooter but that was one that you knew was not going to draw iron as soon as it left his hand.

All in all the nonconference was pretty much as expected except for the Samford game.   Big 10 will be a challenge for this team although in relative terms we have an easier schedule than most with just single games against MSU and Maryland.   I said at the beginning of the season that I would be delighted if we went .500 in the conference.   That is certainly still true although at this point I am not as optimistic that we could actually finish that high.   Would be really nice though to do well enough to at least stay above .500 overall and get an NIT bid so Shavon's senior season has at least some positiveness to it.   I think that is possible (maybe not likely but clearly possible).  But for it to happen we need to have guys like Tai and Morrow step up and play aggressively and with confidence.

I played for coaches that could blister paint and had my share of dressing downs so I am not saying that we need to coddle them.

But I sit in the first row of the third deck and I can hear Tim... might be time to pull it back a bit.

The team has played better in the past when we had the Tim who was jumping up and down, getting in a good d stance kind of clowning around, telling the crowd to make some noise.

Also I don't want to sound old but kids these days do react to positive more than negative at least I have found that to be true in my years of teaching and coaching.

Just my $.02.

Friend I sit with asked last night if Fuller bunking up has maybe hurt his shot?

Wasn't he lifter of the year? I know it isn't suppose to but man the stroke on his high lights look nothing like now.

Yeah, Nick was Lifter of the Year a season ago; this year it was Andrew White III.

The bulking up hurting your shot is like an old wife's tale from the 70's. Unless you're in the Mr Universe pagent strength only helps your shot. What he's lacking is confidence. In pregame he didn't miss and I mean that literally. If he missed a three in warmups I missed it and then he airballed his three in the game. Success breeds success & unfortunately that works in reverse. I sat 15 rows up last night and watched most interactions between Miles & players coming out. I couldn't hear him raising his voice from where I was (people must have a different definition of screaming than I'd do.) and not once did I see him wearing a Bo Pelini face. I saw some intensity at times but he was never close to being out of control. If you want to see people explode, go watch Coach K, Roy Williams or Iszo.

We sit in the corner behind the bench so I watch this all the time. He was not bad at all last night, maybe once but I have seen a few times where he has gone over the top that I have not seen since he has been here. I had never seen him go after anyone for as long as he did to McVeigh that game. Seemed way different than anything in the past. I think he likes this team but is a little more tense for some reason this year.

Tai is another one whose shot looks good in warm ups most of the time but as you said confidence is a killer if you do not have it.

* Bulking up shouldn't have an effect, but bulking up your head does.  A number of these players simply cannot catch and release their shot in rhythm.  They have that slight hesitation, and that hoses them.

* As far as Myles yelling at the players...ho-hum.  I do not think it is too obtrusive at this point.  I would worry more if the coach is not blistering my butt, that would tell me that there is apathy, or the coach doesn't believe I have a chance to improve.  It is different when coaching HS and below, but in college, these kids probably expect it.

* That team last night was BAD.  We played fine the last 19 minutes of the game.  But for 21 minutes, we were a lost team.  No excuse for that really.  Hopefully we now have our poop in a group.

Now, kind of important...I believe we have our 8 man rotation set.  The only break in the rotation will be injury or foul trouble.  It looks like the rotation will be:

Guards: Glynn, Benny and Tai

Wings: Shavon, Andrew and Jack

Bigs: Michael and Ed

On the outside looking in: Nick and Jake.

Well I heard in the first half he yelled" Nick that is a turn over". When Nick did something. I kind of thought it was a no shit kind of comment. Not saying that he going off all the time but a couple of times this year he has had to have a coach or somebody grab him to get him in e huddle because was still jawing at an official.

I really don't care, but I think he has some kids who don't seem to handle that very well.

I also didn't think lifting would cause problems but thought I would ask for him.

Do you think Miles has the ol' "no less than four passes before you shoot mantra" imposed on the team?  Seemed like there were a number of times we had the opportunity to shoot a three in transition, or take one very early in the shot clock and we instead pulled it back out to work the half court offense. The exception being Andrew White obviously.

After some reflection from last night and moving forward... I think we got some stuff solved last night from a defensive perspective that might help us moving forward.

As dimes has said, that team competes with most teams it played until after halftime. We figured some stuff out and blew them out by 30+. We'll be alright. Just gotta keep our momentum moving forward.

I heard Miles in the post-game radio interview talking about the "punishment" for a turnover during practices.  Something like a hard sprint on the treadmill for a short period of time.  He followed the comment with a quip that we are either going to stop the behavior or we are going to have some players in really good shape.

I am of the opinion that if a kid cannot take hard honest criticism, he should not be competing at this level.  Goodness, I remember Coach Tony Sharp lighting me up and I was a small town walk on trying to hang on with my finger tips.  I further remember being told by an upper classman that if he didn't yell at me, it meant I wasn't worth his effort.  So I took the "feedback" from Coach Sharp as a compliment from that point forward.  Yes, Fuller's offensive gaff cost us a possession.  That can be important, especially if we are playing a good team in a close game.

Think about it this way.  If you shoot 50% from the floor, and you can decrease turnovers from 16 per game to 10 per game, that would be an additional six points.  Once you get into Big Ten play, those six points make a huge difference between a close win and a close/heartbreaking loss.

I agree on the rotation and we need to find some rhythm in our substitution patterns and minutes played.  Seems like coaches right now are making it up on who to sub in and who they are subbing for.  Hoping that with conference season starting, we shore up the rotation and get some consistency to who should be on the floor.
