Gibbs clearly provoked the altercation!

As said in another thread, he made the initial foul when he jumped on top of Petteway in his attempt to get the ball.  He furthered the situation when he rolled on top of him.  Petteway then got in trouble by attempting to defend himself while underneath Gibbs.  So yes, Gibbs clearly was the one who provoked the incident.

Pardon my French... but Gibbs has been a giant douche nozzle for many years. Literally. Since he's 42 and getting a 9th year. Him and Craft of OSU both.

 

I'm sure both were jawing and jawing all day long, so both were equal to blame in getting each other worked up.

 

But no doubt on that play Gibbs was the instigator. Wasn't particularly close, since he jumped on Petteway and stayed on top for 2.5-3.0 seconds. As Petteway got on top and pushed him back, ref pulled them apart. So Petteway wasn't on top/in control until the last 1.0 second.

 

Petteway wins the battle that Gibbs started. Douche.

Give me a break, people.  Both players are competitors.  Gibbs went after the ball and ended up on top of Petteway.  Both players got tangled up and just let the intensity get the better of them.  Seemed to me like a double foul would have been the more appropriate call, but at least the officials recognized that it wasn't a one-sided provocation by either player.

Here is a distinction that seems significant:

1. Gibbs, the instigator, walked off the court with a smirk on his face and to cheers from the crowd, by my observation.

2. By contrast, Petteway, who merely reacted to abusive behavior, was broken up in the locker room and apologized to his teammates, according to Tim Miles.

Teran wasn't helping Gibbs out by having his arm wrapped around Grant's neck.  Not easy getting up that way.  But I will acknowledge I also saw what Swan saw, the smirk on his face when one of his teammates greeted him on the bench.  Not sure who that player was but he obviously said something to Gibbs.

Of course his arm was wrapped on him after a could few seconds of Gibbs holding him down and throwing elbows. I'd imagine most would act like Petteway in that situation. What's funny is Gibbs acts so tough on the court but he wouldn't last a minute with Petteway in a real fight.
