I've gotta say I'm glad we don't play the Mavs this year. They just beat SCST 91-59.

The Mavs have pretty good ball handling/shooting, especially from their perimeter & wing players.. Omaha also beat a UMKC team by 30 (101-71) that hung w/ the Jays for a while. Omaha will play at South Carolina State next Monday, in a quirky scheduling home-and-home one-week series.

Mind boggling good play by UNO so far.  This a club that cannot even go to dance for couple more years.  How they are so good(yes small sample size) is amazing.  They led most of the game at Iowa and barely lost to UNLV on the road as well.  Those are schools I would have expected to hammer a team like UNO.  And they are drubbing the weaker teams on schedule so far.  It is a nice secondary school to be able to root for living in Omaha and having gone to grad school there.

why are they not able to go to the dance again?

They are transitioning from D-II to D-I, and transitioning teams have a 4-yr ban from the NCAAs in the process.

They have to wait so many years after joining Div 1 to be eligible, for some reason.

I believe one reason is to keep teams from making the leap to the "big time" that don't appear to have a game-plan for improvement in competition level as well as raising financial support necessary for D-1 athletics.

They (UNO) sort of remind me of the South Dakota State women's basketball team during their transition years in the mid '00 years: great record, but ineligible for the NCAA due to the transition period.  The Jacks, however, did compete in the WNIT during that time.

I think that UNO would be eligible for the NIT or CBI or such if they do well enough.  Or are they ineligible for ALL post-season tournaments until the transition is complete?

Interesting that UNO had that blow out score with Simmons only playing 1 minutes due to injury.  We struggled with that team for 30 minutes, and UNO blows them out missing their best player.

Many of you probably noticed the chippiness of SCSU during our game.    Well, there was a double ejection in the SCSU-UNO game.

And I think their coach gets paid like $110,000 per year.  Let that sink in a little bit.

I love that it gives kids another D1 option in this state. Hey, Norfolk's Jalen Bradley had 15 points in 12 minutes last night, although it was mop up. And CJ Carter of Benson has been outplaying Simmons. It's bound to help the sport in general.

There are a bunch of D1 caliber players in Omaha right now, if they can't get into Creighton or NU, UNO could find themselves with a nice little team when they're eligible for the dance.

I was going to say something along this earlier.

The state of Nebraska (and especially Omaha) produces some quality basketball players, but a majority of them are not at the Big 10/Big East and to an extint Missouri Valley level.  Having a school like UNO where they are low level D1 gives those players a chance to stay close to home and play at the D1 level.  Just look at the guys that were previous mentioned Bradley and Carter.

To build on that.  Just imagine if Metro Community College in North Omaha would have a basketball team.  They could be very good.

I was more referring to the academic side of things, though. There are a bunch of players in Omaha over the next couple of years that have the talent, but not the grades.  Probably three of four kids at Central alone. UNO's the easiest of the three schools to get into.
