I'm sure it certainly helps to know you have a sold out arena to be able to justify increasing the salary budget for assistant coaches.  The athletic deparment is probably getting an incremental $500-750K in revenue from increased ticket sales, not factoring in what they'll get for suite leases and concessions.  Reinvesting it back into the program makes a lot of sense at this point.

And in order to keep sold-out arenas sold out, you have to put a pretty solid product on the floor.  Which means if you want the cycle to continue and be self-perpetuating, then you better hire some guys who can land some guys who can compete with the guys who will be playing in that sold-out arena in January, February and March.  Looks like Miles is doing his very best to move us that direction.  Yay, Tim!

I love how Georgetown plays defense.  If he can bring some of those concepts as well as their work eithic along with him...oh wow.  Georgetown does run the Princeton offense, which isn't exactly a fit.  But I bet a bunch of his recruits would love to play the pace that we offer in comparison to the Princeton plays.

This is soooo exciting.  He may only be in Lincoln for a couple years, but hopefully his imprint on the program will be much more significant.

Well, I would think what this might mean in terms of recruiting is that guys that Hunter had established a relationship while at G'town now might put Nebraska on their list just like Illikainen seemed to have transfered his interest in us to follow that other guy who assisted us for, like, a season (what was his name?).

That guy was such a Johnson!

I still don't believe this is actually happening to Husker basketball.

I've got quite an assortment of welts from repeatedly pinching myself, but yes, this appears to be happening!

This is the recruit we've been waiting for the arena/practice facility to reel in.  This guy can open a lot of doors for us that 90% of assistant coaches out there can't.

The style of play should reflect the head guy.  But the players running the plays are going to reflect a lot of the guys in suits just down the bench from the head guy.  A little bit of how they earn their keep is scouting, etc.  But a LOT of it is bringing in guys who can play.  Because it doesn't matter HOW good your scouting is if you're fielding 200-RPI-level talent while playing a 50-RPI-level team.

From Dirk's Mad Chatter column:

>> Considering momentum in the program and that fancy, new spaceship-looking building in downtown Lincoln, Tim Miles will never have a better opportunity to sign a big-time recruiting class. If he can’t do it in 2014, he never will.

Well, luring the top assistant from John Thompson’s bench at Georgetown is a good start. Miles announced this morning that he hired Kenya Hunter to be his top assistant — and presumably top recruiter. It sent minor shock waves around the hoops landscape.

“Simply put,” CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish writes, “this is not your grandfather’s Nebraska. Or your father’s Nebraska. Or even your older brother’s Nebraska.”

The Huskers will likely shift some recruiting resources to the East Coast, where Hunter has experience. Which means Miles and Greg McDermott may be eating meals together in Philly, D.C. and New York. I recommend Carnegie Deli, guys.

If this still was "Bunch Bites" i'd say this portion would rival a Mountain Dew in terms of empty calories.

I read an article that stated Hunter wasn't a Princeton offense guy.  Can't find the link right now, but we won't have to worry about seeing that offense due to this hire

Daledangdarn...you shouldn't act surprised. Tom is completely obsessed with all things Huskers. He comes here and tries to act innocent and civil with each new screen name but he eventually outs himself. But alas today is a great day to be a Husker and a day for doublejayalum to cry in his wheaties.

Nebraska hires Georgetown assistant Hunter

Big Ten Network

It's pretty short, but they have a twitter feed that shows what some people are tweeting about the hire.

One of the reader comments (FWIW):

Houston Buckeye on 6/10/2013 @ 12:37pm EDT Said:

This is big for Nebraska. He brings a lot of experience in perhaps the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country. DC, MD, & Northern VA regularly put out not just good basketball talent, but ELITE basketball talent. Of course they have to be coached up but solid move for the Husker.

nice grab. Miles has a nose for offseason grist. As a Pistons fan, and that means a fan of 'Moose' Monroe, I can tell you Kenya's coaching abilities are highly thought of. This isn't just a used car salesman who talks kids into coming. He's a good developer of talent, and was a factor in Moose developing his skills so quickly.

This is a serious coup for Miles and the program, but as always, it only matters if players sign on the line during the recruiting cycle.

2014 is going to be the magic year.

Miles acknowledged Hunter’s recruiting ties but said that’s not the only reason he brought him on staff.

“He’s got a network of contacts that I think expand our boundaries,” Miles said. “But he’s really a well-rounded coach and a good guy, so I think he’s one of those guys who can help you in a variety of ways, whether it be on the floor with the guys or in a scouting report or during a game or on the recruiting trail. He’ll be good for us in all of those areas.”

Miles, who also interviewed Oakland’s Saddi Washington and Wright State’s Chris Moore in Lincoln, said Hunter’s name came up a few times during his search process, but that he was “a little skeptical” a coach would leave Georgetown for Nebraska.

“But at the same time I got to talking to Kenya, and as we got going and got to know each other better, it became more and more of a great fit and I think a better match,” Miles said. “I’m really excited about it.”

Hunter, who’s spent much of his coaching career running Princeton-style offenses, said he’s eager to learn a different offensive style under Miles, as well as develop ties in other areas of the country.

All will be beneficial as Hunter aims for his ultimate goal: To one day be a head coach.

“For me, it’s an opportunity to learn a different way,” Hunter said. “In this game, you always want to continue to absorb and learn new things.”
