One problem with the '18-19 team was they had no bench.

You can argue about which group of starters would be better between these two teams, but I'd take this year's bench over that one every day that ends in Y.

The one problem with the entire Tim Miles era was the lack of definable and reliable post presence.  The revolving door of sub-standard and inconsisent bigs was never solved.  Which lead to guys like Dererk Pardon having career afternoons inside PBA (still nightmare fuel).

I think your interior with this year's squad is undeniably better than anything Miles had and that's enough to keep games in the B1G closer night-in and night-out, overall.  Copeland and Roby are some of my favorite players to have watchd and very talented, but they weren't dominant defenders in the paint or streetsweepers on the boards.  What this team lacks (and what takes last year's team to a different level) is a player like JPJ.  Perhaps Brice Williams can fill that role?  Glynn was great but I think Lawrence has the ability to grow into a similar role with a potentially higher upside.

Nice first post, my man.

I see sexism is alive and well on this board.

Give me even odds and I'd bet you $50 the new poster's a dude.  That's not sexism, that's just playing statistical probabilities.

CFH has a history of choking on a cupcake or two in the past with our "most talented team ever".  Just sayin'

I die laughing every time I think about Matt A insisting that we make a hype video for the 21-22 season with him in it

This is the worst team Nebraska has to date assembled defensively in the KenPom era

Listen I'm not going to lie - I still believe that the team that was assembled Hoiberg's second year was a phenomenal team that should have been 10x better than they were. They, or Matt (whatever), definitely assembled a squad but obviously didn't manage it. DWalk essentially being ineligible that year didn't help.

If Matt Abdelmassih ever decides to put a Nebraska section into his new St John's biography, this should be it.

2023-24 Skers

Projected Game 6 Starters:

PG Jamarques Lawrence 6-3 So.

SG Keisei Tominaga 6-2 Sr.

SG Brice Williams 6-7 Jr.

PF Juwan Gary 6-6 Jr.

PF Rienk Mast 6-10 Jr.

Bench:

PG Jarron Coleman 6-5 Sr.

SG CJ Wilcher 6-5 Jr.

SG Sam Hoiberg 6-1 So.

PF Josiah Allick 6-8 Sr.

2022-23 Skers

Actual Game 6 Starters:

PG Sam Griesel 6-6 Sr.

SG Emmanual Bandoumel 6-3 Sr.

SG CJ Wilcher 6-5 So.

PF Juwan Gary 6-6 So.

PF Derrick Walker 6-8 Sr.

Bench:

SG Keisei Tominaga 6-2 Jr.

SG Denim Dawson 6-5 Fr.

PF Wilhelm Breidenbach 6-10 So.

PF Blaise Keita 6-11 So.

Just for comparison purposes. And I chose Game 6 because that's the first game Derrick Walker was eligible and that's our next game.

So, which of those two would you rather go to war with? And I mean "war" in a figurative, sports sense.

By the way, Denim and Wilhelm are combining for just under six points per contest for their new teams so far this season. And they both average about 14 minutes per game.

They were starting games for us last year. Second half of the season. Conference play.

It's wild to see in terms of production how much more talented, as a whole, this season's squad is in comparison to last year's team. How it all plays out, we shall see. . .

I should also add there's no good reason for me to put Juwan Gary in the starting lineup over Josiah Allick. Other than just symmetry. And the fact he's putting up better numbers. And, also, I wanted a sort of natural comparison between Allick as the backup 4/5 and Breidenbach in the same spot. In the last 2 games, Allick has averaged 25 minutes to Gary's 15, but Gary is stuffing the stat sheet.

This year, you have a  *healthy* Juwan Gary with an added year of experience and skill development. And I'm cautious to say it, but it seems to show.

No Sam H.? He's more a part of the rotation this year than Rice going forward.

Perhaps Juwan will supplant Josiah in the lineup; but I will be a bit surprised if

it happens.  Josiah is our glue player, as is Sam.  Their effort on the floor creates opportunity for teammates.  Seeing it up close while in Sioux Falls was somewhat inspiring.  He literally tipped passes and misses to teammates who were awarded steals and rebounds.  His motor runs non-stop.

If Juwan does supplant Josiah, I will understand it; but I do believe the rotation will not change the minutes played or the overall statistics.

It's Sam now. But I hope they keep putting Eli out there. What if he developed  like JL did last year? What if he is quite a bit above average for a 6-8 freshman? It would be really nice come February if that's the case. But gotta keep playing him to find out.

Excellent point. I'll make the change. I just copied and pasted from an earlier post.

Then I'll go with this year -10 on a neutral court.

Wait. I guess virtual PBA is a neutral court for two Husker squads.

It is December 3, 2023, NU and Creighton are tied 61-61 with 6 minutes remaining, who you do want on the court for the last 6 minutes (you cannot sub during this stretch)?

Mast

Tominaga

Gary

Brice

Coleman (was going back and forth between Coleman and Lawrence here)

One of the reasons I have optimism for this season is that there were past years where I would have stopped at 4 names and struggled to come up with a 5th.

This season, I could blow way past 5 and realize, oh, wait, that's too many names.

I mean, quick example, I don't think too many people would put Sam Hoiberg on this list of the 5 guys who have to finish the game from the six minutes mark. But he legit made game-winning plays last year and seems to have continued that positive trajectory this year. I look at Josiah Allick and think, yeah, definitely have Josiah out there. But then what about Juwan Gary? Well, him too. OK, who you leaving out? Mast? No.

That's tough. I would honestly have a tough time whittling the list to just the five guys to finish the game, no substitutes.

What I can give you is a short bench, though.

I think I can give you a final 8 guys. Final 7 if you held a gun to my head.

Final 5? That's tough. How many fouls does each of them have?
