Couldn't go to the game, and watched only a little bit on tv toward the end.

I'm still irritated with the BTN announcer--when the Maryland guard undercut Glynn: the BTN guy went on about it being a clean foul.

Then, the crowd is booing the offender on the next possession, and the BTN guy is going on about how only great players get booed. I wanted to yell at the tv that Husker fans will boo any schmuck who takes a cheap shot--especially if he hurts one of our guys. There was no back-handed compliment in those booes--none whatsoever. Scheesh!

In some regards we did exactly what we needed to do: force turnovers and made it to the foul line against a Maryland team that once again was sluggish and sloppy on the road.

Have seen almost everywhere about how we turned the 18 turnovers into...9 points. Lot of people also mentioning how we rarely make the extra pass in transition....wonder whether this is something coached to prevent turnovers or if it's just how guys operate.

Lots of little things that could have made the difference in this game. We're close...we're going to win some more games this year.

One of the most telling stats is Shields and Webster combining for 5-22 from the field. They are 2 of our 3 best players, so we can't have them both struggling. I thought Shields could've lived at the foul line during parts of this game, but the refs didn't agree with me unfortunately. And it is hard to see how right or wrong refs are when watching in the arena, so I try to keep that in perspective. Tai's turnover late was a head scratcher. Those 2 have been huge for us, so I'm confident they'll rebound and win us some games down the stretch. We have a good chance to go 3-1 these next 4 games.

Shavon Shields is using up three point attempts that should be going to Andrew White. In fact, I feel like we should be running that play for White that we were running for Benny tonight where he's wide open in the corner for three. Don't know why Miles doesn't run that play for White instead.

If I was in charge of the game plan, I'd only have White shoot the three treys that he made and not the four that he missed. Actually I'd have him shoot the three that Shields missed also, except just make them. And we can't have Benny shooting the three he missed; only the two he made.

Doesn't make any sense to have any players taking shots they end up missing..

I hole-hardedly agree.  I would have also had the players just fake the shots that were blocked and pass to the open guy for an easy lay up.  That would have been good for at least 26 more points.

Norm. That. Hurts. I may have to go see a shrink now. :)

Post game notes from UNL

*-Nebraska shot a season-low 31.8 percent tonight. NU’s prior low was 37.7 percent against Villanova. Entering the game, NU led the Big Ten in shooting percentage in conference play (47.8 percent)
*-Michael Jacobson finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, one off season bests in both categories. It marked the first time in Big Ten play he has been in double figures.
*-Shavon Shields finished with seven rebounds, moving past Herschell Turner for 14th on NU’s career list.
*-Andrew White III led NU in points (19) and rebounds (nine) for the second straight game.
*-Glynn Watson finished in double figures for the sixth straight game with 10 points
*-NU committed just six turnovers which matched its season low (also vs. Northwestern and at Michigan State)

*-Diamond Stone had eight blocked shots, which ties an opponent school record against Nebraska (Walter Downing, DePaul 3/28/83; John Flippen; Baylor 3/9/2000)

Nebraska Coach Tim Miles

On missed opportunities

“I think there are a lot of missed opportunities for us. We turned them over 18 times but only have nine points to show for it. We have a couple rebounds just drop out of our hands and we give up five points in the blink of an eye.”

On decision making

“Our primary break was not good, Again, that is stuff off the turnovers, the stuff at the rim. We just didn’t execute very well. I think their length has something to do with it, their athleticism certainly does, but we just didn’t make great decisions.”

On the end of the first half and getting back in the game with defense

“I think we were so amped up, you know, when you play defense and you play in tenth gear and you’re going and you’re, frothing at the mouth, right, you are turning them over. When you play in offense you have to play in seventh gear, you have to whip yourself off a little bit, have some poise, and we didn’t do that.”

On recent losses

“I like this team. I believe we can be a winner. I feel bad for our fans that we haven’t won at home in the league as much. We have treated them (our fans) to fun basketball, but not winning basketball and our goal is to win. I am disappointed by that, but the big thing is, is how we respond on Saturday. You are not just a good team, it is an evolution. You do it by building habits daily and by playing hard and playing well and are kids have never not played hard, in my book.”

Nebraska Players Andrew White III & Michael Jacobson
Andrew White: On how much of this game was just on missed opportunities?

White:  “We definitely put ourselves in a position to win the game defensively and when you get turnovers, usually that gives you the opportunity to get some easy baskets. Transition, maybe get some threes and transition before the opposing defense can get set. So capitalizing is just focus and making the right decisions which we did not do all the way around tonight. If I could contribute that loss to one thing I would say, just capitalizing off turnovers would probably be it, just because usually that is such an easy thing. You get a turnover you should get a layup or a good shot. That is why this one is just a tough loss to take because we put ourselves in a position to win a game and something easy slipped by us today.”

On the end of the game when it seemed a little rushed but he did got his shot up on the rim
White: “Well this year, that was my first shot like that. Huge shot. Coaches set a little play for me. My screeners were good, my pass was good. But like I said, They knew I was getting the ball and they ran me off the line but there was only a few seconds on the clock to get it up. I tried, whether I’m off balance or not. I felt like if I get the ball up high enough with some arc on it, put some tough on it, there’s a chance it was going in. So as far as a three-pointer, I’ve never been that confident and that excited to shoot a shot in my life. It felt good, I was really confident in myself. I felt like the team and fans probably thought it was going in but it was a tough shot to make for sure just with a guy kind of running up under you and you’re a little rushed with the passer and defender jumping you.”

On Maryland’s size
Jacobson: “It was difficult. (They have) big bodies obviously, a little bigger than I am. We felt like if we could get it down low and then kick it back out, I didn’t have to score. It was definitely not like a focus, but if we could get it inside and get some in and out action with guys like Drew (Andrew White III) we could get some shots, get Shavon (Shields) some driving lanes, things like that. We just felt like if we could get it inside and get it back out that there would be some opportunities for him.”

Maryland Head Coach Mark Turgeon
Opening Statement
“Obviously it’s a great win for us. It’s a great win for me. I got my family here with me who I don’t get to see very often so it makes it even more special for me. I’m really proud of our guys. I thought defensively, we never quit trying to guard. Our post guys were terrific around the rim all night. Thirteen blocks is, I believe, a school record. They’re hard to guard. If you’ve watched Nebraska the last few games, they’ve really played loose and scored a lot of points, and I was nervous about that. With that said, Melo (Trimble) made some big shots for us. Our execution was much better in the second half than it was the first half. Jake (Layman) was terrific defensively. I thought it was really good to see Jared (Nickens) made some shots. It’s hard to win out here on the road. Back to back road games Sunday and Wednesday plus a Thursday game, it’s been a lot on us. It’s a good win for us. I’m really proud of our guys.”

On Melo Trimble’s performance
“You just have to know he’s going to do what he does. I thought finding the bottom of the basket at the start of the second half was big and he figured out a way to get to the foul line, which I thought was big. We made some adjustments in our ball screen offense that I thought opened up the court a bit more for him. He’s a winner. He just keeps doing it. We’re down three and they have all the momentum and he hits the big shot to tie it. It’s what he does.”

On turnover problems
“Nebraska’s really good defensively. They’re really fast. They’re really quick. We were in serious foul trouble. We were playing some lineups we don’t play a lot. They’re quick. They have three players in the top ten in steals in the league. They’re good. The crowd was in it, and we were a little discombobulated and that all kind of just led to it. It was amazing we had a one-point lead at half.”

That wasn't directed towards you, KZ. I was having fun with what other people said later in that thread.

It was just a hard game to swallow last night.  We were so close, but execution bit us in the butt, as did Diamond and Mello.  Say what you want, but those two can ball.  Tie that to the fact that we simply could not finish around the hoop, led to a frustrating demise.

Sorry to chime in so late on this thread but I was watching a rerun of the Illinois/Rutgers game. We played good defense last night and got beaten by a team with more talented players at this point in time. Now the fans as well as the players need to put this one behind us, keep competing at this level and finish the regular season strong. The season can still be memorable if the right set of circumstances occur. Let us remember, most gurus picked us to finish in the bottom four of the league.

We had quite a few unlucky breaks last night where the ball just fell into Maryland's hands and they were under the hoop....but the biggest play to me was when we were up 54-51...got a stop, and McVeigh let the rebound go off his hands out of bounds.  Maryland gets the ball back.....Benny decides to double down(why?) and leave Trimble open and he drains the three.  Tie ball game 54-54.  Cant pintpoint the loss on any one play but that was a big series of events IMO.

That was indeed huge IMO.  Big moment to get a stop, the one time no Maryland bigs were around the rebound, and we brick it out of bounds.  Melo gets a look, makes it, and is nails the rest of the game.  Who knows what happens if we get the board, and go up 5 or 6. vs. a tie and getting Melo going.  I said "Uh Oh" when Jack couldn't secure the board, and man, did it bite us.

One thing that the color guy said last night that I would agree with was that "good" teams win this game, "great" teams win going away.

I am not so sure that Maryland is that good of a team. We didn't play all that well and kept them with in 6 all night.

They could also be that team that only plays hard enough to win, don't know for sure.

How they finish against Purdue and Indiana on the road at the end of the season will tell you how far you should advance them in your bracket

I thought Maryland was the most talented and lazy team I've seen in a while.  Physically imposing, talented players that appears disinterested at times and turned it on just in time to win.  That type of attitude and play will get them beat in the tournament when they play teams that are equally talented.  They won't be able to just turn the switch and win.  Their starting five was the biggest I think I've ever seen us play.  They were all tall and big.

Three fast-break opportunities where we should have converted and came away empty.  Difference in the game.  It's rare for that to happen once in a game; for us it happened at least 3 times.

Two dump-downs that were wide-open but misplayed by our bigs.  Hammond in the first half shoulda just dunked.  Jacobson in the second half should have used his body to shield the ball forcing the Maryland guy to foul instead of block the shot.  Both of those should have been buckets.  Easy buckets.

We had some defensive miscues where we ended up with two guys guarding one player and left someone else open.  Can't do that.

But, other than those things, we really actually played well enough to win this one.  We were definitely in it the whole game.

One concern of mine that I haven't been able to let go of is our late game lack of urgency when we're trailing but potentially within reach.

And it happened again last night.

When you're down 5 and there's 90 seconds left in the game, you have to get the ball up court, get into your early offense quickly, make some sharp cuts and get the ball to a shooter in position to make a shot.

I know it's not as easy as it sounds when you type it, but on the other hand, don't waste precious seconds dribbling out by the time line.  Get the ball moving right now.  You can't take time setting up your offense like it's the middle of the first half.  You just can't.

It's interesting to read the comments from the opposition after the game.  And if you think we're grumpy about the reffing in this game, you should read the comments at the end of this article.  They're also generally complimentary of the Huskers team and the fans.

Maryland once again overcame a flurry of turnovers to escape with a close conference victory, capitalizing on its size inside and stellar play from Melo Trimble.

  • Kugler needs to step up for his home team and quit letting that other announcer homer call everything!!!

Dodds "AMAZING" block on Jacobson was one of the most blatant fouls I have ever seen!  Damn near knocked Jacobson out of bounds.  Almost had a heart attack after that non call

That out of bounds play where the refs looked at the monitor when it was 66-61 was no doubt our ball.  Watch the trajectory of the ball.  No doubt it was off of Dodds.  Once again Kugler step up!

Where was Morrow this game?

Shields is a good basketball player that tries to take to much on himself and hurts the team at times because of it.

We need a big for defensive purposes, we get killed down low

White's last shot should not have been taken, it wasn't there

All in all I am very disappointed we lost that game, and unlike a lot of you I was expecting a W in this game.  Close doesn't mean jack squat, and am getting sick of losing.

Lastly, burn me at the stake if you want, but I am on the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to officials.  Did we still have opportunities to win at the end of these games, yes,. The timing of these calls/non calls have a big part of the outcome of a game.  Jacobson should of been shooting 2 free throws(Tied 57-57, See 2nd bullet point) but instead Marylands following possession Trimble get 2 for a lot less contact.  He missed one, but in that big moment(Tie Game) the Refs gave them the potential 4 point swing.  I won't even start in on the Technical on Miles.  It may not seem like it matters, because we still had opportunities to win at the end.  Just stating that everything counts, and when the calls favor the visiting team it is not fair, and it really pisses me off!
