Theory: This season will turn on whether Terran Petteway can learn/decide to play within the system or continues his black-hole hot-doggin' with the ball. There have been a number of times this season that the team has performed better with Terran on the bench--his efficiency has got to improve dramatically, or he will undoubtedly be a college player this time next year!

Reality: Tarin Smith is a special player. His three point shot came up huge, but the heads-up assist to David Rivers is every-bit as critical to the win.

Agreed on Smith. That was awfully clutch. He seems to have a nice feel for the game. He passes the eyeball test, and I can't say Webster ever has for me.

I'm not going to write Webster's story yet (I learned my lesson on Benny Parker), but I see so much more potential and skill in Smith.

I think what we see is the difference in good High School basketball in the States. Tarin has he some very good coaching, while Tai has learned the International game where he seems to do much better than in our style. He will get better, I think he just has too.

One rebound, Walt.  Are you kidding me??

Thought the same thing as Swan--who would have called Benny getting a team leading 35 minutes 2 years ago--or even 1 year ago.  Love the Benny.

Sooo ... I'm back to looking at juco recruiting sites trying to find big men who can board and aren't already committed to Southwest Tennessee Baptist Tech A&M.  If I find one, I'll PM the coaches.

Stephen Bardo: "Tai Webster, in my opinion, can go back to New Zealand because Tarin Smith is a baller, and he needs to be in the starting lineup."

Of course, Tai's not starting over Tarin, but forget it, Bardo on a roll.....

I think Hammond is going to contribute more soon.  I really liked how he looked out there--much quicker and more intense than I expected, and a great assist to start things off.  He's obviously not where he needs to be from an upper body standpoint, but the kid is pretty physical and looked athletic contesting a couple of shots.  At the very least, he's the caliber of athlete the other 4 spots are, and he's had some good coaching.  I'm relieved.  I think he's going to be a good one, and I think it happens this year.

Tarin appears to have the clutch gene.  I think he ends up being our third perimeter scoring option.  I don't mind him and Benny being in at the same time.  I think you can put Tarin at the 1 or 2 and he's fine.  Tai is being force-fed this scoring role, but I don't think he's ready for it.  I think Miles needs to be honest about Tai's performance and give him more bench time.  Tarin has been much more consistent, heady, and confident.

Play of the game was, once again, from David Rivers hustling.  His offensive rebound (1 of 4) led to that great assist from Tarin.  I was really glad to see the role players (Rivers, Benny, Tarin) step it up when we needed them late.  We can't rely on TP and Shields to play a perfect 40 minutes every night.  Those two were tremendous in building our huge lead, but both fell off in the second half.  This was a great test to build some confidence in other contributors.

It's been mentioned a couple times here, but it deserves full notice:

Both Petteway and Shields made 8 field goals tonight. The difference between the two players is that Shields did that in 13 shots, Petteway took 22 shots. That needs to change. I still think Petteway is an excellent player, but that needs to change.

I really think that Shields, at this point, is by far our best player. When he got into foul trouble, our offense got stale. Even if he isn't making shots, his play is creating opportunities for others. The way FSU's defense collapsed on him (especially in the second half) limited his shots, but opened things up elsewhere.

Anyway, good win on the road. Looking forward to beating Creighton on Sunday.

I actually thought we played quite well tonight. I'd give us a "B+" or "A-" on the old report card.

Everyone but Webster impressed me tonight. Walt can't rebound, as pointed out, but him hitting a couple of three's early, including the first one of the game, was huge. He also played with 4 fouls (as did Moses) for a LONG TIME without fouling out.

Speaking of Moses, he was one of the key players of the game. Easily.

Two biggest shots? Corner three's from Benny and Tarin.

Shields a baller. I thought Petteway played well.

Rivers the third biggest play of the game battling for that offensive rebound with us up just 2 points late. Led to a bucket.

This was a TOTAL TEAM EFFORT and we showed guts and moxxy tonight. I'm VERY encouraged by this effort and think with a "W" on Sunday, we'll find ourselves back at #24 or #25.

I think Sunday needs to be the return of the famous "Dave Post-Game Report Card!"

NEED MO' MOXIE, BRO!! :D

We are lucky we got them now. Their top 3 point shooter is out. Thomas was not himself. And the one I see being a stud is Xavier Rathan Mayes. He got screwed by the NCAA last year and was forced to sit out the year. He is a phenomenal player I got to watch a couple times. He was overshadowed by Andrew Wiggins but he outplayed some very good players in the NBA and starring elsewhere in college hoops. Once he gets some more games under his belt he will be their best player.

Good call on Xavier Rathan Mayes.  He was getting in the paint at will against our guards and that is very tough to do, especially against Benny.  He is/will be a great player.

Good call - this will be a really, really good road win by the end of the season. Rathan Mayes was really tough. With the way he can get into the lane, when you have 3 7-footers who know how to cut to the rim and finish, his assist numbers should be huge. Then when you bring back a really good 3-pt shooter, they'll have a good slash & dish offense. Throw a healthy Thomas in there & FSU will be strong. Ojo/#50 is perhaps the biggest man I have ever seen; even if he's not a huge offensive threat, by the time he leans on you for about 10-12 minutes per game, you're worn down when the other interior players are in the game.

I understand the negative feelings because of the way the 2nd half played out, but that 10-min stretch to close the 1st half was as good as it gets. Great move by Coach Miles to go zone, even though he said on the post game that they hadn't really worked on it in practice. It worked incredibly well. Of course, Coach Hamilton is really good, too, and his halftime adjustments were a huge key to FSU's comeback.

As far as Walt goes, yeah, he struggled, but foul trouble had a lot to do with it, I thought. Just imagine how much trouble we'd have been in if he fouls out with 10 or 11 min to go, so he had to be somewhat tentative. He and Moses' ability just to stay in the game over that last 15+ minutes was huge, especially the way that crew was going.

I hope the rest of the Big Ten is happy we took the Karl Hess & crew bullet for the entire league in the challenge ... and we still won! At least I hope he's not doing another B1G-ACC game in an ACC arena. Then again if I'm the ACC, I schedule him for a 6 pm game in an ACC arena tonight and then delay the start for an 8 pm game to make sure I get him there too. Same recipe Wednesday.  ;)

--Tai can't shoot.  Hey Tai, there's a reason you're open.  And still struggling with passing decisions.  It's getting late.  Reason for concern here.

He needs to keep taking those shots because at some point we're going to have situations where he has to take and make them. I'd like to see him become more aggressive going to the rim though.

On the subject of Walt, toward the end of the game, he took the ball to the basket and got blocked at the rim--not to mention hit at the same time on the hand and arm, the shoulder, the rib cage, the hip, the thigh and at least one leg.  That contact moved his entire body about a foot off its normal path.  And, of course, Karl couldn't find his whistle on that one.

Not that we're bitter about it or anything . . .

When the EMTs arrived, his pulse was faint and he was barely breathing.  His pupils were dilated and he seemed confused and disoriented.  On the way to the hospital, he flat-lined but they were able to bring him back.  He's lucky to be alive.

But, he was a Husker player and Karl Hess didn't see any discernible signs of bleeding out, so ...

Ha - yeah, watching the replay now, that one came at about the 8-minute mark & was brutal, because FSU took that supposed non-foul & turned it into a transition 3-pt play on the other end with a very questionable reach-in foul on Rivers. 5-pt swing on 2 very Karl Hess-type calls. That's about the time I started losing my mind during the game.  ;)  At least till the double-foul at the 4-min mark. And then the 5th foul on Petteway. I think I completely blanked out after that one. We did win, right?  ;)

EDIT: Just saw the replay on the jump ball call w/ 33 sec left & slowed it down to still frames. Smith has the ball tucked in the crook of his elbow and is clearly signaling timeout. One FSU player appears to have his arms around Smith's neck, two others are trying to jump on the pile & flailing their arms, but none are even close to touching the ball, let alone simultaneous possession. Not Karl, but the same guy who called Petteway's 5th foul. Just amazing. The look on Smith's face after the play is priceless.
