Huskerpapa Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 I was going to wait on this subject, but the timing is starting to feel right. Petteway is certainly exceeding my expectations. Simply put, he seems to have matured through this season and is currently playing his best ball. He is only a sophomore. It has been (what seems to be) a long time since we had a player with a three level game. Meaning, he seems to have an ever improving long range shot, a good mid-range game and can really take it to the hoop and finish. I'm not certain how long it has been since we had another player who had this total package. Ade perhaps had this triple threat pontential, but his long range shooting was suspect at best. I have landed on three names. They are Mr. Lue Mr. Piakowski and Mr. Strickland. Am I totally off base? Who am I missing. Jete? Spencer? Nate? Fire away. Quote
doc1394 Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 If these last few games are anything like the rest of his career here, I could see you putting him up with those names. He keeps on playing like this and he'll be in the NBA no doubt. Quote
TomEadesSucks Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 A healthy Shavon Shields? I think Dylan Talley last year had a pretty good all-around game and so did Jeter, but not as consistent as Terran has been. How about Wes Wilkinson's senior year? Quote
AuroranHusker Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Andrew Drevo was a pretty salty player who played alongside the versatile & tailented Nate Johnson (one of my personal fav Nebrasketball players)! Quote
hhcscott Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 I think we've had a lot of players with the ability to score inside, mid-range, and outside. I think the difference is that many of them lacked the absolute confidence and the greenlight from a coach, to force some shots to get the offense going. Petteway is writing checks that his game CAN cash this season. There are times when Pettaway has taken horrible shots. Some coaches, would have had him on the bench, even if they went in and his confidence would have slipped, like I would guess was the case at TT. hhcmatt 1 Quote
jason2486 Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 I'll say it: Based off what we've seen so far, he's the most complete player we've had since the 90's. As mentioned above, he can go to the hoop, has the midrange game, and the 3 ball. And when be goes to the hole, he's 6'6" and actually can throw down some monster jams. He is our best chance to have a POTY candidate since Venson Hamilton. Quote

jimmykc Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Only name I could come up with is Beau Reid although Clifford Scales might merit some consideration. Quote

Averages 5.25 rebounds a game, nearly a steal a game, and 0.7 blocks a game. Not staggering numbers by any means but he's certainly not afraid to get in there and mix it up. Harder for a guard to rack up points, rebounds, and blocks like a true enforcer such as Hamilton. Is he a premier defender? No way. But Petteway is no slouch, either. Quote

He has taken some bad shots & Miles has immediately pulled him from the game. I really don't know Petteway but he seems to really care about his team. Between his attitude and Miles direction, I think his shot selection has greatly improved. He is always going to have the possibility of letting a questionable shot fly, but together he & Miles have found a pretty good sweet spot. trickey 1 Quote

He struggles with rotations. Quote
Cazzie22 Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 He is vastly improved from his frosh year at Texas Tech. I never saw this coming, but I'm pleased he has developed into a good player. Quote
BjoeHusker Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 I'd put Jamel in there Jamel White? Seriously? Quote
hhcmatt Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 even if they went in and his confidence would have slipped, like I would guess was the case at TT. I guess at TT they told him to go into the corner and stay there to shoot 3s. It took him a couple months after he arrived at Nebraska to stop doing that. Quote

This. I can't remember the poster, but some mentioned that they either saw him practice or had a source that said he was an absolute baller, but I don't think anyone could have expected this. I'm ashamed to say that he was the one addition I wasn't all that geeked about. Obviously I was as wrong as it gets. Quote

You are correct he has pulled him after some poor efforts, but it seems more of a clarifying and communicating opportunity rather than a benching. Usually he's back in quickly. I'm seeing signs that he understands that he can be the man by lifting the team rather than trying to carry the team and I am delighted to have him for three seasons Quote

I remember one guy on here -- and I won't say who but it wasn't me -- saying that Petteway was looking like a wasted scholarship and appeared to be odd man out, or words to that effect. I think it was said when Tai-as-top-25-recruit hype was going wild. Quote

The knock on him from some was that he struggled to shoot the ball, but that he could take it to the rack. I don't doubt that maybe that was true at some point...but I think he has proven when he is on...he is on and can make any shot on the court. If he keeps improving...and I have no doubt that he will with the effort he gives off the court.......he will be scary good next year and his senior year. Quote
hhcmatt Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 We've gotten to the point where some games I don't think he shoots enough! Quote
PimpMario Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 I have been as hard as anyone on Petteway. And for good reason, I figured he could really develop into a difference maker for us. He still makes me shake my head with his shot selection sometimes. He still turns it over. He still has trouble with decision making; especially on fast breaks. Having said that... He is the clutch guy who has really helped this team turn into a mild surprise so far. Without him (and especially since the loss of Biggs we don't win our last 2 games). Going forward his development and maturation is of the utmost importance to this team next year and in 2015. Quote
