It seems like the majority of people on this board like what Coach Miles has done so far in his short time here with recruiting and creating excitement around the Bball program.  It isn't to often that NU basketball is getting press time with local media all summer long and during fall football camp.

So what is it about Miles that he is doing different than our past coaches that couldn't succeed here?  Did he hire better assistant coach?  Does he have a better personality?  Does he has some secret plan that has made his successful at every school he has coached at?

I know facilities are the obvious answer but Sadler had the new practice facility to recruit to as well and he had a good personality.  Coach Nee didn't have any fancy facilities to recruit to either.  No question Miles is doing work here at NU and seems to be on track to be one of the better coaches we've ever had here.

It's the convergence of several different things. It's the athletic department putting more money into it, not just facilities, but the use of a private plane, which wasn't available until recently and the salaries they're giving his coaches.  The facilities are part of it and Miles seems to have what Collier and Sadler didn't and that's a proven plan, that he's sticking to.  He's also hired assistants with great recruiting ties that I don't think Barry or Doc were able to bring in.  It's been several different things coming together that have led us here.  That said, we really aren't anywhere yet.  He hasn't actually gone out and won anything.  So, before he can accept his crown, he probably has to do that first...

I'd build off of this and say everything Miles has done so far is above and beyond his predecessors.  Twitter, getting out in the public, involving the students and fans, humor, coaching staff, recruiting, personality, etc.  I mean the list could go on how Tim and the coaching staff are light years ahead.  Now when he gets that first NCAA win he can sign his lifetime contract with how happy NU fans will be.

I think one of the biggest differences (saying this as a total outsider) is the coaching staff he assembled.  I think Doc brought in guys he could work with but he didn't nab any guys who seemed like ace recruiters and I think Miles placed more of an emphasis guys who could bring in some players.  And the results are already showing.  I don't think the facilities alone explain the differences.

And this "It seems like the majority of people on this board like what Coach Miles has done so far" seems like a substantial understatement. I haven't seen anyone post that they are dissatisfied.

In fairness, Doc was pretty engaging early on and I know they went to dorms and tried to get students involved.  People loved him and called him basketball's Devaney.  Doc didn't lack in that department.  It was a different style, perhaps than Miles, but I don't think Miles had him beat in that regard.

Miles simply smarter and craftier in all aspects of the job. Facilities helping but he would be doing well without them as well compared to what we are used to. Teaching kids to get better is very overlooked aspect. Great at that.

Recruiting. Doc tried to stay away from AAU teams, where all the HS talent is.

That's more myth than reality. He may not have waded in as deep as others, but every domestic high school player he signed, and Diaz may have been too, played the AAU circuit.  He went to those tournaments.  His assistants, though, definitely were not as well connected as Miles' are

While I would somewhat agree with the point that it is really to early to be addressing this question - this response hits it on the head in my view.   Some of the other points people have made are partially correct (and a couple are dead wrong in my view) but the primary point is that the success (assuming we are correct and that is what will happen) has much more to do with Miles and his efforts than anything different that the university has done.  Not saying things are not better now - just saying other coaches had the resources at their disposal to succeed also.

Of course Miles has had 2x the $$$ to give to assistant coaches. That helps some.

I've always believed that if Doc had more money to use on assistants he may have done better.  It seemed like his initial assistants were his best he had.  I remember he had the plan of redshirting guys when they first got here (Richardson and McCray) and try and win with fifth year seniors.  But he couldn't keep those assitants and then had to go assistants who had foreign ties and then the JUCO route exploded.
