KenPom shows luck on his home page, but I wouldn't say luck is factored in to the rankings per se. A three point win is slightly better than a one point win which is slightly better than a one point loss. So if you win all of your games by one point over poor competition, you won't be ranked very high.

Luck – A measure of the deviation between a team’s actual winning percentage and what one would expect from its game-by-game efficiencies. It’s a Dean Oliver invention. Essentially, a team involved in a lot of close games should not win (or lose) all of them. Those that do will be viewed as lucky (or unlucky).

 

It's the effect, not the cause so it's a by-product as opposed to a factor.  Think Ohio St last year where they went 16-19 but were KenPom's 49th best team....that team ranked as one of the unluckiest by KenPom.

Thanks!  It seems like KSU has had a lot of close/OT games that they’ve won in, so I imagine they are up there on the luck scale currently

Maybe this ranking has some value at the end of the season for rationalizing teams at the extreme but I don't think it has a ton of value and certainly doesn't at this point in the season.

I look at our luck rating for the first 3 years of the Hoiberg era and my takeaway is that we were unlucky that Hoiberg's coaching staff was so dysfunctional.

Why would they want some massive SUV or giant pickup truck?  I would think a college student would rather have something more practical.  Give 'em a Wrangler or something.  They don't have 4 kids and 2 dogs to haul around to soccer practice for crap's sake.
