That's respectable and yes the kids should want to keep playing. Ty Robinson is alot different though he played for 5 years and that program hadn't made a bowl game in 8 years

Juwan has been in college for 6 years and Brice 5. They want to go out 'on top' so to speak. I don't think it differs that much. Dudes want to compete whenever possible as long as they are able. I can respect that.

Of course the big dance should be the goal every year. But I'd sure be happy if the program just gets to where we were in the 90s (with some tourney runs mixed in). Went to 5 NCAA tournaments and 4 NITs in the 90s. Won a conference tourney. Won an NIT. Was a 3 seed one year. Multiple NBA players. Had a Big 12 POY. Pretty damn fun decade. 

 

Steve Sipple gets on the radio and scoffs at the crown tournament and rants about how there's absolutely no reason Nebraska can't be in the tournament every single year, because he thinks Georgia and Oklahoma and whoever else are (he just doesn't notice those teams when they aren't). He thought Creighton had been in every year under McDermott. They've missed it four times. There are literally only three schools - Michigan St, Kansas, Gonzaga - who go to the tournament every year. All other programs, even the bluest of the blue bloods, miss the tourney (and the NIT) from time to time. UNC, Kentucky, Duke, Indiana, UCLA, Syracuse, Louisville, Michigan, Texas have all had bad teams in recent years. Matt Painter and Greg Gard have had some atrocious teams. 

I don't see why Nebraska can't get back to what we were in the 90s, and that's a great place to be for about 95% of college basketball programs. Making the NCAA tournament and the crown tournament in back to back years is a good start. 

I quit sports radio except for after the games.

Last I saw he was "planning to enter the portal".  Did he actually enter the portal?

I'd assume he isn't playing but we're in uncharted territory here.

With most of basketball being wrapped up for a lot of institutions, the Crown could effectively become a highly recruited event for teams with players in the portal and would also entice players in the portal to continue playing to showcase their skills in front of coaches who come to watch.

There is nothing prohibiting a player from playing for their current team while in the portal.  

 

In theory your second statement could be true.  However, with 30+ games of film, I don't think there would be much benefit for the player risking injury and possible NIL money by playing in a meaningless tournament for a team he will not be a part of the next season.  But, there are other scenarios where I could see it making sense (i.e. a player that lightly played and has an increased minute opportunity due to other departures).  I guess we'll soon find out.

It's meh. I'm not suggesting it had to be astronomical. But you can't even get to a cool million. Lame. 

 

There's a short window to have this thing take hold and be successful. Only a matter of time before the tournament expands. 

 

It's kinda like when I was a kid and you could win a Dodge Viper at Runza. But really when you read the fine print you won a year lease of a Viper. Lame

Sure, but not one team is gonna accept a bid to the Crown over the NCAA tournament. 

 

This shows me this is not a serious tournament. Let's not kid ourselves this is about making money. 

 

And my thinking is if the investors that put this together could only scrape up enough money for a 500K purse they don't have much confidence in it either.

 

Like I said this tournament only has a short time to try and become established and survive the expansion of the NCAA tournament. 

 

Before the announcement of the purse I'd have given it a puncher's chance. After the announcement  of the purse I don't even think the people putting the tournament on think it has a chance.

TBF-- it's probably only a matter of time before we start paying NIL to teams who make the Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4, National Runner Up, and National Champ.
