So, what does everyone think of the new starting lineup?

Jamarques takes a seat; Brice starts at point; Juwan, Josiah and Rienk (our only rotation big men) all on the floor at the same time.

 

I have thoughts but I'm curious about everyone else's. Perhaps this was covered in a post-game chatter, but I missed it, so sorry if already discussed.

I don’t think it is that big a deal really as there are obvious limits to how much we can go with it.  It makes some sense to try to start out ballgames with more physicality to set a tone, since we struggle with that.  For long doses, I don’t think it would work as we wouldn’t have enough spacing of ball handling.

JLaw said he’s liked coming off the bench, so if it gets JLaw going, I’m all for it.

I'm not a huge stats guy, so I don't know what the numbers tell us at this point.  I can tell you that since the change, JLaw looks more comfortable and seemingly has played better.  

Our 8 player rotation (perhaps 9 if/ when Eli comes back) is working well as a group (at home).  Hopefully we can find that glue on the road as well.

I didn't like it against NW, as I think it allowed Buie to force us into some switching mismatches and let him get going after we held him down nicely in Lincoln. 

 

Mich didn't have anyone like Buie on the floor, and their top guy was a frontcourt player, so it clearly worked better vs Mich.

 

I'd prefer to see us adjust the starters game by game based on the defensive scouting report and who we're facing, but I get the coaches wanting to use the bigger lineup to help us rebound better early in games and set a more physical tone.

 

As long as we can keep turnovers to a minimum with the bigger starting lineup, I think we'll continue to see it.

Against Michigan, I thought it took Brice a long time to get into the flow. I think he had 2 points in the first half on two FTs and didn't really start asserting himself until midway through the second. He ended up with 13 points but 11 of those came with under 12 minutes left in the game. So, if I had to choose between Brice and JLaw feeling comfortable and in the flow, I'd say it's more important to have Brice comfortable to start out.

 

And Jamarques shot 2-9 from the floor with 1 assist in 23 minutes against Michigan, so I'm not sure how much he's really getting going coming off the bench.

At the end of the day when looking through the lineup permutations I think one big thing is to not have Lawrence and Allick on the court at the same time.

Thus, when we're talking about Gary instead of Lawrence, that's good. When we're talking about Allick instead of Lawrence, it's a bit of a wash.

 

Whether you start Lawrence or Allick probably depends on who you're playing and what sort of personnel they role out. Nebraska might opt to start Lawrence on Saturday because Penn St is going to constantly put pressure on you and they want as many ball handlers on the court as possible.

If NU rebounds better to start ballgames with a generally "BIG" lineup, then it's likely worth doing it more often. The biggest concern is if an opponent has a strong lead guard who can break us down. I'd be in favor of Juwan Gary locking down the opponent's best scorer for most B1G teams, save for Purdue's Edey or the like.

I think I read somewhere that our +/- with Brice Keisei wilcher Gary Mast is really good? 
 

When those guys are on the court together, heck even Hoiberg at times, it really spreads the defense out and allows for good looks. Just my eyeball saying that. I don’t have the metrics.

This. I’d like to see Allick come off the bench because I don’t care for the three front court guys in at once while we don’t have a true PG to break pressure and get into our sets. It puts too much on Brice to be the only ball handler, and it’s not like he’s great at it either.

 

And Gary’s presence is way too important to start a half without him. I think that really cost us against Illinois. They went on their 13-4 run with him on the bench.

Yeah, those guys were kickin' ass the other day during that BIG run against Michigan. Using the 5-out lineup with a slew of shooters in rhythm is a thing of beauty. GBR

This is exactly why I'd go with Lawrence over Allick in the starting lineup. That and the issue of Brice getting into the offensive flow.

 

So, mark me down as not a fan of the new lineup. I'd go back to JLaw starting at point, Josiah off the bench, and Brice in his natural wing spot.

Against PSU I hope JL starts. They pressure the hell out of the ball. Think we may need RM to handle the ball a lot too. If we can protect the ball I like our chances but definitely worried about 20 turnovers.

A lot will depend on how physical the refs allow the game to get— especially in the beginning.

I understand wanting to get Brice going. But if the trade off to him handling the ball more is us building 30 point leads, I’ll take it.

We should be better on the defensive boards with the new lineup but we are not. I don't know why guys just aren't blocking out consistently. They do sometimes, but not even close to all the time. CJ is the most consistent on the team.

We play a defense where we aren’t on the body of the defender on the perimeter. It leaves lanes for the offense to get to the basket for easy put backs, they have space to create angles.

I really like it - mainly because Allick and Gary can guard 3-5, and both can survive against others. Makes us, theoretically, a rebounding match-up nightmare.

I like it, & I’d like it even MORE if Allick & Gary (Yes, even Gary) weren’t so quick to Hoist a Three. It “should” allow us to set a Tone Physically at the start of the Game.

I'm like 100% against Allick and Gary shooting 3's unless we're up by a 3-4 possession margin, and they put nails in the coffin. Gary has a little longer leash I suppose, but I'm never too excited when either are shooting.

Gary's 3's make me chuckle. With Tominaga, CJ, and even Mast I can watch their shot and be like, "Oh that looks good!" With Gary it's more like, " Damn! That balls still going up!?!" And I have no idea where it's gonna land.

Josiah is shooting about the same from 3 as Mast 35+%. I’m still not high on Gary taking them unless he is wide open with his feet set. He is so much better attacking

I get it but there's no excuse imo. Tony Bennett's and Chris Beard's packline style defenses could also make it more difficult for their players to consistently block out. But you'll always see their players find an opponent to collide with when a shot goes up. It's a mindset deal. We have guys stand and watch way too often, sometimes even on free throw attempts.
