Creighton just bought out their spot in the Battle 4 Atlantis to join this tourney. Insane.

All about the dollar bills for players now. Can’t pass up having an extra million in hand for the next 3 years.

Would have to think Pop Issacs not going back to the Bahamas played a part

Sounds like Creighton. Smells like 'em, too.

Maybe. Idk. Still needed to be let into this tourney tho. Which was a hot commodity spot to fill.

Remember when our new Athletic Director said in his opening interview something like: "Today it's NIL.  Tomorrow it will be something else."   Well, tomorrow is already here, with this new NIL-related event.

This new event is merely the tip of a massive iceberg--and what happens over the normally-foreseeable future is entirely unforeseeable, except for this: everything is changing!

For starters: the NCAA is toast--as is everything it makes happens.  For example:

  • The NCAA gets most of its operating money from the NCAA basketball tournament; but
  • Nothing represents the old NCAA way of exploiting the "amateur" athlete for someone else's benefit than the NCAA Tournament; and
  • Until now (with the event noted above), it's been hard to imagine what might knock the NCAA Tournament off its lofty spot--but we are now seeing the beginnings of a model for doing just that (and this Genie isn't going back into any bottle);
  • Creighton's efforts and expenditures to get into the new event show just how meaningful the new model is--which means the new way is here to stay and is already displacing the old NCAA model; and
  • What will this new event do if/when everyone from the SEC and B1G and Big 12 starts saying, "I want in too?"

It will be interesting to see what schools and what organizations take control of all this.  The large conferences will control football.  How they will ultimately react in other sports like basketball, baseball and women's sports, remains to be seen.  And how or will all the Cinderella wanna-be schools in the NCAA tournament be handled in the new order?  Everything is uncertain.

The moral of the story is this: buckle up!  The ride is getting bumpy!!

I see this being like the NBA adopting the in-season tournament this past year. We’ll pay attention in November and by March no one will care.

Do people watch the in-season tournament? And for those who do, does that title even matter?

June title > in-season title in the NBA, as it should be.

Exactly.

You wouldn’t want to bail on a tourney to get an extra mill in NIL?

If we had made a commitment to participate in a certain event, I would like to see us have the integrity to honor that commitment.

I wonder how it will work with Berke?  In retrospect, how did it (or does it) work with Mast?  I wonder how NIL money filters back into foreign born players these days?  You simply cannot convince me that they are not getting their $$$.

I'd imagine they will expand it to 128 or 256, or shoot, even, everybody........ mo' money, mo' power. But, basically, mo' money.

Maybe it will evolve much as how professional golf has evolved, with an NCAA Tournament and a LIV Tournament. With foreign money footing the bill for the LIV Tournament.

I wonder at what point gambling will begin to figure out a way to control content. For instance, how do the books make more money: by gambling on single games, or through tournaments? They can then impact scheduling to produce the most revenue. Does the SEC/BIG move to squeeze out everybody else benefit the casinos/online, or do they prefer a wide-open NCAA? TV is providing the $$$ to college sports now, but gambling might want to make its impact felt more.

Foreign players can only earn passive income through NIL. So jersey sales, product sales, etc... But they can't be actively promoting them while they are in the states. They can when they go back home to their home country. A useless and pointless distinction. What I imagine is happening is that they are putting out products, and then someone in their home country gets money funneled to them to buy the products, and then that money gets funneled back to the player.

All I'm hearing re: NIL/1890/Nebrasketball is we simply do not have enough money for basketball and we're losing out on guys simply due to $$$. Who knows if I am correct. Could just be sour grapes turned into rumors.

I think keeping Brice and Juwan here cost a lot more than it probably should have in the open market. I also don't know how much we're giving Mast for not playing a year. I would assume not as much as we would otherwise but who knows.

For our program I think our NIL is pretty good. We are not going to be in the same league as the blue bloods or some of these other schools with huge NIL donors. We do seem to be in that second tier and I’m good with that.

We can’t get into bidding wars for the big names but seem to be spending pretty well to keep the guys we have and bring in some very good talent. Griffiths, Essegian, Worster, Morgan (hopefully Berke) are all guys who had multiple P5 offers and we got them in part because of our NIL.

If we keep winning more will come but I’m not disappointed in what we have at all.

It will be interesting to see how NIL money plays out over time in team performances.

Will higher money lead to higher-quality teams?

Will NIL create dissention within teams?

Will dissentions be similar, whether the money amounts for any team are common or large?

In other words: at the collegiate level, is it possible to buy top-flight talent and, thereby, create a top-flight team?

The end of how we know today’s college basketball world is if a foreign backed (billions) league forms and teams jump ship because the league offers each school X amount of money per year. It’d be like PGA and LIV. Anyone who doesn’t think that LIV hasn’t hurt the PGA is delusional. The game of golf is being affected. But, money talks.
