hhcmatt Posted July 11, 2016 Report Posted July 11, 2016 I believe NU has recruited Paul VI recently with another player. Anyone remember who that is? I was watching an old HS game of his vs Oak Hill and at least recognized one of the names. Were you thinking Quadree Smith? We offered him in 2013. Here is that game. Taylor was the starting PG. Oak Hill had Troy Williams along with at least 4 other Div 1 guys https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA6u1EbAQhDWFNDLV29nHTkALDe3jgWoX Quote
royalfan Posted July 11, 2016 Report Posted July 11, 2016 This guy seems to have the athletic ability to have a chance to succeed. That cannot be taught. If you don't have that you don't have a chance. There is a decent chance that he can be a guy that we don't cringe when he has to come in the game. Not to knock Joe Holmes, who was the starting point guard on a decent team back in the day. He tried and competed, but was extremely limited. There can't be anyway Holmes is better than Taylor. Holmes made no treys all year, shot 36 percent, averaged 1.7 a game, 1 rebound a game and 1.3 assists and .5 steals. Without adding someone like Taylor, we could be looking at worse than Holmes type of production in a hurry with a couple of injuries. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted July 11, 2016 Report Posted July 11, 2016 Serious question: Do we think he is a better college basketball player than Nick Fuller? Tai, Anton, Watson, Morrow, McVeigh, Jacobson, Palmer, Roby, Horne, and Jordy are all perceived to be good D1 talent by everyone here on the board. So unless Taylor is a real steal I'm sure he slides in behind those 9 guys in terms of talent. Fuller has only ever shown flashes once I think (Maryland his RFr. Year). Maybe, maybe not. Hard to tell at this point. One thing I do know is that Fuller won't provide backup depth at the guard spot. Let's say Tai and Glynn both pick up two fouls in the first half. Miles isn't sending Nick in to cover the guard spot to finish the half. Nick isn't a bad player. Nick's problems are two-fold: 1) he plays at a position where we have great depth; and 2) he never found his shooting touch in college. With White leaving, the depth problem eased just a bit. If Nick can find his rhythm, he might see the floor this year as a kick-out shooter. Quote

I also like some of the things he has said and done. He seems to be coming in with realistic expectations and confidence. I love that he plays defense bc I hate players who take that end of the court off.Props to Miles and staff for finding a solid addition this late in the cycle. Season cannot start soon enough! Quote
AuroranHusker Posted July 11, 2016 Report Posted July 11, 2016 Taylor, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound guard, comes to Nebraska after spending the 2015-16 season at Odessa (Texas) College, helping the school make its first NJCAA National Tournament appearance since 2001... He attended Paul VI (Va.) Catholic High School, leading the school to a 31-6 record and a VISAA D1 State championship in 2014. He averaged 8.5 points per game as the only senior on the team. He helped Paul VI HS to its second Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title in three years, including a 19-point win over DeMatha High School in the championship game. It marked the school’s only two conference titles since the school was formed. He also helped Paul VI to a runner-up finish at the 2013 City of Palms Classic, considered one of the best high school basketball tournaments in the country. Quote
jason2486 Posted July 11, 2016 Report Posted July 11, 2016 I like his athleticism...his explosive moves are like a poor man's Russell Westbrook. Hopefully he adds great depth behind our top 3 guards. swmckewon Posted July 11, 2016 Report Posted July 11, 2016 People would have killed Tim for having 2 scholarships open this year. Between the back to back seasons of freshman PG transfers, Benny's graduation, White's transfer, and Palmer having to sit we needed a guard for this season. As long as everyone realizes we need depth with fairly capable players they should be happy he is here and will hopefully give us serviceable minutes for the next 2 seasons. Worst case, if it doesn't work out...he's asked to transfer after the season ends. I don't think you'd see Nebraska ask a 4th year guy who was a "please join our team" signee to transfer under any on the court circumstance. Quote

I'm usually one of the most optimistic guys on this board, so this might come as a bit of a shock coming from me. This bio posted above (from Huskers.com?) is a little bit of BS. It's OK. He doesn't need to be some great player. We're not signing a high school kid who might be around for 4 years. This is a guy whose purpose is to provide depth at the guard spot for the next two years, depth that we need. If he gives us anything more than competent depth in 5-10 minutes/game, it's gravy. HOWEVER ... To say that he "lead" his high school team in 2014 is misleading. I watched the first quarter of the game Dimes linked between Paul VI and Oak Hill. I think Dimes said he was the starting PG? Not from what I saw. He played sparse minutes in that 2013 game as a junior and was playing behind a kid who was a sophomore at the time. The next year, as a senior in 2014, I'm not sure he was a starter then, either, but the film I found from him in 2014 was not encouraging. Not, that is, if you're hoping he becomes a major contributor for us. I look at him as being back-court depth and a replacement for Bakari Evelyn and I'm fine with that. If he blossoms, so much the better. I won't hold my breath for that but I won't say never either. The first vid is some highlights for the other team. Our guy (#10 in white) gets exposed on defense a few clips in a row. Matador defense, not fighting through screens, a lot of standing around. That's as a senior in high school. The clip after that is highlights from a blowout win, also his senior year, against an inferior opponent. He looks a little better. (Again, #10 in white.) Makes some nice passes but doesn't do much exceptional and isn't typically around the ball on offense or defense. It's clear the player on that team in the backcourt is #5 Kevin Dorsey who just transferred from Minnesota after his freshman season. Quote

A 6'-4" combo guard who competes at the D-1 level to be in the top 4 of the back-court rotation. Glad ET is a Husker. BTW, does one expect the Huskers to mention that he barely saw minutes in H.S. at key moments?!? - Go back and read Nick Fuller's "fabled" bio on huskers.com summarizing his time in Lincoln: http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=209116063&DB_OEM_ID=100 ET's most recent season contains some highlights that are at least noteworthy, even if the competition is likely suspect. ET possesses some smoothness & aggressiveness in his game that should translate to NU: Quote

Dead Dog Alley Posted July 11, 2016 Report Posted July 11, 2016 He was a role player in high school, at Samford, and at Odessa. So if he's not playing 20 minutes a game (and we don't need a guy in the backcourt to play 20, with Watson & Webster & Gill) he shouldn't cause any attitude problems. Here's a story on their high school championship game, pretty much stating that he wasn't the star on the team. Paul VI girls, boys sweep Virginia Independent Schools Division I basketball championships By Chelsea Janes and Roman Stubbs March 1, 2014 Paul VI added the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I title to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference crown it won Tuesday with a 64-56 victory over previously unbeaten Cape Henry on Saturday afternoon in Petersburg, Va.. The No. 3 Panthers (28-6) opened up an early lead that hovered around 10 through most of the game before the Dolphins (26-1) stormed back with a 7-0 fourth quarter run that cut the lead to four. But the game then morphed into into a foul-shooting battle, and the Panthers hit enough free throws to stay two possessions up through the game’s final minutes. “The intensity we had and the spirit we brought, no matter how much they came back, we always had the spirit to keep pushing,” said Panthers junior Josh Reaves, who scored 10 points in the win. “We found the determination to finish the game strong.” On a team loaded with high-profile stars, less-heralded but ultra-reliable senior Evan Taylor provided an extra push for the Panthers, chipping in five points and setting the tone for Paul VI’s intensity. “Evan Taylor was everywhere tonight,” Reaves said. “Grabbing rebounds, getting steals, shifting help-side, beating people to the spot. He made a ton of defensive plays.” Kevin Dorsey led the Panthers with 17 points, and Marcus Derrickson also contributed a big peformance with 13 points including a key three-pointer late in the second half that helped seal the win. The Panthers have one more title on their 2013-14 checklist — the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament — which begins March 13. AuroranHusker 1 Quote
