Good deal!  Nice to have kids that are all in instead of waiting for a better offer to come along.  That's one reason I like recruiting heavily in Illinois....they have no powerhouse college teams to compete with.

*Currently* "no powerhouse college teams" as of yet. Coach Mo is doing work there in IL!!

"No powerhouse teams in Illinois" is a little insulting to the Illini, IMO.  Top 15 in wins all-time in hoops plus a final 4 in the not so distant past.  Not to mention DePaul has more hoops history and pedigree than Nebrasketball could ever hope to achieve in any of our lifetimes, and Northwestern is rapidly building a program we may find ourselves envying.

Plus, the real "powerhouses" like Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State et. al. are all skimming the elite talent out of Chicago already.

I'd say there's plenty of competition in Illinois for talent.  Good news is, there's a very DEEP well of hoops talent in Illinois, so it's still a winning strategy.

Michael O'Brien is Chicago Sun-Times Prep Sports Editor.  This is from a report he published yesterday:

"Nebraska-bound senior Nana Akenten is a Player of the Year contender, his presence alone made the Raiders one of the area’s top teams.  . . .   Akenten, a 6-6 wing, scored 21 points. He shot 4-for-7 from three-point range. With his size and leaping ability he’s able to get off a three-point shot over nearly any high school guard.

'Offensively he can do just about whatever he wants,' Brost said. . . . 'He’s well over 50 percent from three on the year. That’s pretty good, I’m glad he’s on my team.'”

From the Chicago Tribune yesterday (bold added for emphasis):

Akenten has taken his game to a new level this season. Already talented enough to commit to Nebraska after his junior year, Akenten has harnessed his highlight-reel ability to become a nightly menace. He averages 17.6 points per game while shooting 53 percent from the field, including 16-for-31 (51.6 percent) on 3-pointers.

"I can be a high-flier, but I can also live behind the arc," Akenten said. "It makes it hard for my defenders to predict what I'm about to do next."

Brost compares Akenten to former Raider Ben Moore, a senior and three-year starter at SMU. Both long, lean athletes were recruited lightly by powerhouse programs but kept developing their skills throughout high school.

"I think any Big Ten team right now would love to have . . . Nana, except that Nebraska recognized that right away and really made a push to get him there."

And here is the linked tweet:

And here is some related info from that tournament:

Nana Akenten – Bolingbrook (MVP)
Akenten averaged over 14 points per game for our tournament champions. He was the leading scorer for the Raiders in the championship game with 23 points and he committed zero turnovers for the entire tournament.
