Random place to put this random though: the line between us not being able to find enough players and finding too many players is a narrow one.

That's a deep random thought. Is it also a cryptic deep random thought? Like, both Florida bailees want a spot here and we only have one current opening?

Cryptic? I read every single post in this forum and honestly I'm not actually sure of the origin of this latest inside joke........

I think 'Cryptic' goes back to Miles Press Conference, about the time when Harriman announced he was leaving.  If you recall, near the end of the presser Miles put out a random line that no one was sure how to interpret; something about there could be a lot more turnover in the office staff?   Seems like some of the habitués around here have taken a 'fancy' to 'cryptic.'  ;)

I think Red Don's got it.  Miles said something ambiguous.  Someone suggested it was "cryptic."  Someone else got a little testy about "who you calling cryptic" because they didn't realize the person was talking about what Miles said rather than what the poster posted about Miles saying it.  So then I had a little fun with that aspect when Red Don later said something I said was "cryptic" and I said "them are fightin' words, apparently."  And then everything just became cryptic.

Sometimes these little inside jokes run their course in a couple of weeks; sometimes they last forever, like official tweets from Brian Rosenthal.  You just never know with this bunch.

This is looking like an incredible hire.

Why is it so incredible?

1. Go from an average assistant in Harriman to an assistant from a top 10 program.

2. Might bring a 4* PF with him who is immediately ready to play.

3. Furthering of the Chicago pipeline.

Has Dickerson been linked to us at all aside from the fact that Burno was his lead recruiter at Florida and we need a big?

IIRC, I read somewhere Dickerson had originally been recruited, or VC to Georgetown before winding up at Florida.  There may be a Kenya Hunter link in there somewhere.

EDIT:  Cryptic enough?

I'm not sure I would call Harriman an "average" assistant.  He was much better than average in my opinion

I haven't seen any evidence of above average as a recruiter... and, honestly, that's #1, 2, and 3 in what matters from most assistants.  I didn't dislike him, I just think international ties are a last resort.  Those commits tend to be super risky.  Pinder? Vucetic?  If McVeigh pans out, I'll be the first to give him props.  I just never saw anything that made me think it was a big loss.  I'll take USA connects over foreign ones all day.

I am not going to dis Chris Harriman at all.

From what I'm told (by people in-the-know enough to tip me off about the Burno hire) Tim has done a very good job of hiring staff over the years.  Very good job.  He might excel at that more than any other aspect of his head coaching responsibilities.

He has had one or two guys who seemed like dead weight, but they're not here any longer and they weren't assistants.

Ben, Chris, Craig ... all of the assistants who have left ... have been spoken of very highly.

Which makes me optimistic for the Burno hire.

Just sayin'.

Do those guys think Molinari having a large impact on our strategy is a good thing?

Strategy of what?

both gameplanning and in game coaching.

My answer would be NO

Do you mean that he would probably slant towards a slow tempo regardless of our personnel or are you talking more about the specifics of planning for individual games and the various scenarios that occur during the course of a game? I don't believe what you're asking is a simple good/bad question.

I think they go hand in hand more than you are suggesting here.  His preference for playing slow methodical basketball does concern me a little bit.  I think it negatively impacts our offensive confidence, and if the trend continues, I worry that stagnant offensive basketball will lead to tougher recruiting.  And I liked our defense better in the previous season as well.  Maybe it was guys playing harder.  But we had great rotations, AND great ball pressure, rather than being packed in quite so much.

The last two national champions won in part with swarming defense guard play.  I prefer that to letting the offense be somewhat comfortable.

Craig was definitely the better scout of the two. Not even close

From what I can recall, Harriman the year before last was a very good scout. Smith was in control of the bench. Style of play, right now, to me is less important than winning.

Agree, some will argue that you have to play a style to fit the kids. However, most kids don't want to play games that end 50-45.
