jimmykc Posted May 14, 2014 Report Posted May 14, 2014 I hope this doesn't turn out to be a case where an athlete gets let off the hook by some legal technicality. seems like if you get caught with stolen bikes and a bolt cutter in your vehicle you should receive some punishment for adolescent stupidity. But the law works in strange ways at times, just ask O.J. Hooper 1 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted May 14, 2014 Report Posted May 14, 2014 The drift I'm picking up is that the university put out an announcement (apparently) that if anyone leaves a bike locked to a university bike rack after a certain date, the university will come around, cut the lock and take the bike. The "defense" of these enterprising young athletes apparently is that it was after the date that the university said the bikes would be removed. And so they got busy and removed the bikes for the university? Y'know, just helping out, right? Scientists have apparently yet to find a cure for stupidity. Hooper 1 Quote

Huskerpapa Posted May 15, 2014 Report Posted May 15, 2014 Why do I think this is a stupid practicle joke that went bad...because: - they did this in broad daylight - they did not try to hide anything - they are typically good kids (per people I know who knew these kids in HS) - they did this in broad daylight. As Sip stated, we need to find out the full story before we pass judgement...but lordy, this seems to be a pretty stupid move. unl 1 Quote
Wayne Pesek Posted May 15, 2014 Report Posted May 15, 2014 I wonder if these bikes were abandoned by their owners when they returned home for the summer. Will the owners of the bikes need to be identified before charges can be pressed? Does a theft offense require a victim? Quote
jimmykc Posted May 15, 2014 Report Posted May 15, 2014 If these were cars which the police were going to ticket, impound and sell, would they also be considered fair game for anyone who knew how to jump start them? Some of these bikes may have been valued as much as a junker car. And who can say whether the owner might have picked them up by May 21? This crime shouldn't require incarceration since these appear to be pretty good kids, but it also doesn't merit a bunch of adults trying to justify the deed because the perpetrators are gifted student athletes. They should get the same treatment as a couple of homeless guys doing the same thing for meal money. Lessons will be learned that way. atskooc, Norm Peterson, George Beadle and 1 other 4 Quote

Norm Peterson Posted May 15, 2014 Report Posted May 15, 2014 Amen, Walter. Er, Jimmy. I've gotten a lot of down arrows since we moved to this site but none more mystifying than the one on the above-quoted post. I mean, really? OK. Not sure why that would draw any ire, but OK. Maybe it was fat fingers on the ipad. Because otherwise, a person with an account who has never taken the time to post a single post on this site took the time to register a down arrow for "Amen, Walter. Er, Jimmy." I apologize for how inflammatory that must have come across to ... someone, apparently. Creighton Fan 1 Quote

Norm Peterson Posted May 16, 2014 Report Posted May 16, 2014 Big oopsie. Taking abandoned bikes that weren't abandoned sounds a lot like stealing to me. Although, this has drifted away from being about Tai and I am curious if it belongs on "Husker Fall Sports" forum instead. Quote
