I actually think it was a great question. And that's because it led to an answer that really gives tremendous insight into what makes Tim Miles so good at building college basketball programs.

And Miles wasn't really put off by the question. By the end of his answer he was laughing with Dirk.

Dirk is an incredibly talented writer. No need to slam the guy because his opinion differs from you.

He's a hack pure and simple. It doesn't take much talent to be a hack. Yes, I read his article today. He did everything he could to try and make his horribly timed presser question seem relevant. Like I said, he made it about himself.

Actually Miles was very put off by the question. He went right after Dirk and Barfy as well.

He is not being slammed because his opinion varies.  And not all of us think he is an "incredibly talented writer" and person.

Not long ago Dirk Chatelain received strong criticism from Jay fans for suggesting that Husker basketball success would cause an explosion of the Nebrasketball fan base without impairing the Jay fan base. Now he's being criticized by Husker fans for asking a simple question reflecting the fear of many Husker fans that this success won't last.

The fact that Tim Miles pounced on the question to get rid of such thinking speaks well of Tim Miles. But that's not a negative for the reporter. Kudos to both.

I don't think the question was really out of line either.   I'm guessing at the pre NCAA Tournament press conference that will be one of the first questions that will be asked to Miles.

Exactly this.

Also, I thought the column was fair and well written.

We must not forget, too, that our very own jadler was featured heavily in the piece.  Good read.

You must not know how journalism works. Reporters have been given or have a story i ind before the press conference and then ask questions with that in mind. Dirk wanted to write a story about Nebraska moving past the baggage and wanted a quote from Miles about it. I don't think Miles went after dirk of Lee as you infer

Wow, you guys make me laugh. The hate for Dirk is so funny.

Chatelain's job is to get quotes

Yeah not sure you can hold anything against Dirk when a thread was posted right after the game about exorcism. Basically the same type of question/comment

I don't think DC is a Creighton homer at all....if he leans anywhere it's Nebraska and typically writes non-biased stuff IMO.

He asked the question and Miles answered it.

He didn't get the answer he wanted so he asked it again

I take exception because

  1. He either knew he was going to get that response eventually or otherwise is a yokel. Which one is it?
  2. I think this "curse" thing is also bullshit. It's great for selling virtual papers though, huh?
  3. This is one of the biggest wins in the history of the program.  "Do you recognize the baggage?"  That's your question?

His writing talent isn't the issue...it's the way he goes about his business.

Give me OWH guys like Barfneckt and McKewon all day who report the news instead of guys like Chat and Shatel who invent it. I'm simply not interested in their opinions.

Folks, we have a thread started right now called "The Exorrcist".  That tells me that Dirk isn't the only one that has the past on their mind.  If a local writer brings up issues with the coach that reflects the feelings of the fan base, how that is out of line?

Having said all that, I loved Miles' answer.  And I think his answer was targeted to our fans more than it was targeted at Dirk or Lee.

The issue is Sam and Lee are reporters while Dirk and Tom are columnists. So they are more naturally are going to give their opinions

It may be something that is on our minds, and I'd be lying if I didn't say it wasn't on mine however, that doesn't mean that it is a question that I want asked of our current coach or that I myself would ever want to ask him. I have never seen any clamor from the fan base for him to answer this question. This was a question designed to get a great quote for the paper. Dirk already knew the answer to this question so why ask it in the first place. There is nothing wrong with writing about the exorcism of demons since it means something to the die hard fans but it means nothing to this current group of players, as it shouldn't. Therefore, why ask the question to our coach in the first place?

Speaking of which, I wish I could edit the thread title to eliminate the misspelling of "Exorcist."

As a fan, it's on my radar.  As a fan, I know disappointment.  I understand where Miles is coming from but he wasn't here for all those years where we had heartache on account of one thing or another.

But I was.  I've been waiting for this.  For Miles, these last two seasons took place in somewhat of a vacuum.  He only knows the history of Nebraska basketball dating to April 2012.  He hasn't felt out pain for the last 15 years (and further back than that if you really want to know the truth of it.)

But I don't think I could appreciate how truly special that moment was last night had it not been for the years of frustration and agony of near misses that we've experienced leading up to last night.

I welcome the bandwagoners but I don't think they can really get how special last night was.  Not like the people who lived through the Roburt Sallie debacle or the months leading up to Collier resigning.  Unless you were among the 4,000 or so of us who showed up on a blustery cold winter night to get out-yelled by a bunch of drunk Iowa State fans, you might have difficulty appreciating exactly how far we've come.

You ask the question because you can't manufacture a quote. Even columnists need quotes. If you want to know exactly what he thinks about an issue, you have ask him the question.

Norm, in order to do this, you need to go to the OP in the thread, and hit "Edit".  I think you then need to go to "More Reply Options" to get to the advanced editor, and then you should be able to change the thread title.

I actually think it was fair too...Dirk has been here longer than Miles. He's a Nebraska alum. He grew up with Husker sports. By his own admission, before becoming a supposedly impartial member of the media, he was a Husker fan. So it stands to reason that, while, it's not Miles' baggage, it IS Nebraska Basketball's. As much as we were around for it, so was he. So I don't really see the problem with asking about Nebraska Basketball's (former) woes at a Nebraska Basketball press conference, especially with so much on the line, in a game we historically would have pissed away. I suspect the question would have been asked, win or lose. We just got a happier answer with a win.

I wasn't calling you out, Norm, but I think you know that. ;)   Anyone who has followed the program the last 15 years probably has wondered once or twice if the program is jinxed, which is why I defended Dirk asking the question.

It wasn't a most insightful question to ask a coach.  But by putting that question out there, he gave Miles an opportunity to publicly tell everyone it's time to give that mindset up.

Yes, I remember that game well. I had bleacher seats. I walked down to 'B' level and asked if I could sit down there since there were plenty of open seats. They told me to go ahead. I believe Norm you may have actually captured the low point of being a Husker fan in a single game.

I'm glad that Miles only knows the Huskers in a vacuum. He wasn't hired to be the official Husker Basketball Historian, which is why Dirk's question was incredibly dumb.
