#16 Wisconsin       8-5

#24 Ohio State      7-6

    Nebraska        6-6

    Minnesota       6-7

I'm rooting against Minnesota because if they drop out of the tournament that's one more spot for us.

I'm rooting for Michigan St because every game they win makes that win more impressive.  Same deal with Ohio St.

I'll take Wisconsin over Iowa as we still have a chance to beat Iowa.

Otherwise I'm rooting for the teams in front of us in the conference standings because they're making the tournament anyway and the more prestigious they are, the better for us.

By the end of the day on Sunday, I would expect the standings to look like this.  By the end of this week, we will be mathematically guaranteed to not finish last.

Agree to an extent, but we want as many Top 50 and Top 100 teams as we can get. It's a fine line, however. For example, Iowa sits at 24. If they were to drop to 32 by losing to Indiana, but it got Indiana to sub-100, it'd benefit us. Indiana, Penn St, Northwestern, and Purdue are right on the fringe of 100. Illinois is barely under at 91. However it plays out, we want as many of those teams to be sub-100 as possible.

My initial reaction upon seeing Norm's first post was, "damn, I'm going to have to root for Iowa and Ohio State...and I HATE doing that."

But upon further reflection, we're kinda competing with those two for that precious 4th place finish aren't we?  We need to root against them!  And nothing makes me happier than to think about it that way!

If we go 2-0 (which we should) and if Iowa goes 0-2 (which they could) and Ohio State goes 1-1 (which they are capable of) we would be in a tie with Iowa for 4th with 4 to play.

4th would be nice in terms of path to the CCG, but having the 5th seed may set up better for us to get (what might be) a much needed win in the B10 Tourney.

Let's not forget that the 2 teams we play this week are 2 teams that we've already lost to this year. These next 2 upcoming games aren't going to be a walk in the park.

I understand what you're saying, but I have to say that, in some ways, this team reminds me of the '91 Huskers.  Picked to finish last but they have the tools to go out and beat people.

The '91 team:

Was picked to finish last in the league.

Relied on a number of players who had redshirted the previous season.

Beat Michigan State.

Had a diminutive PG coming off the bench who gave them a spark.

They had players who could beat their opponent's players one-on-one.  And they had solid role-players surrounding them.

This team isn't going to get a #3 seed.  It isn't going to produce a 26-8 record.  But this team can beat people.  We are flat out better than Penn State, Northwestern and Purdue.  We can go toe-to-toe with Illinois and Indiana on the road and maybe sneak another road win.

I'm calling it right now:  I think we will make the dance and I think we'll win a game when we get there.  The monkey comes off the back in 2014.  You read it here first.

Note to Tim Miles:  Speaking of diminutive point guards, if we do happen to make the dance, and say we draw Xavier in our opening match-up, do not start Benny Parker at point simply because he hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send our conference tournament game against Oklahoma into OT.  That's been done before and it didn't work out so well.

Can some explain to me the logic behind 'needing that B1G tourney win to seal the deal'? Is it just to add an extra win to our win total? If we finish in 5th we are going to be either in or we are going to be darn close. If we are just darn close, what is another win versus the worst team in the B1G going to prove? Does that extra win against the worst team really boost the resume and propel us into the tourney?

Anywhere between 4th and 6th is a good spot for this team to be in. We'd likely face Illinois, Northwestern or Penn St. in the first game. I don't want Indiana or Purdue if we can avoid it. Give us a neutral arena and I'll like NU's chances. OSU isn't scary anymore and I think this team would love another shot at Iowa anywhere between 4th and 6th would be really good scenarios for this team.

Yes. We're chasing wins right now. Our resume matches up pretty favorably, otherwise.

Can you imagine Rich King & Clifford Scales on this years club? Senior point guard and a 7'2" Center? I think you're right though Norm, this is the year the Monkey goes away...

This team is different.  I don't expect people to understand what I'm talking about.

Over the last, say, 15 years, I've hoped the team would do well.  The end of this year, I expect it.

Over the last 15 years or so, I might think, with a little luck, balls bouncing our way, we could beat KSU with Beasley.  But I didn't expect it.

A dozen years ago or so, I would look at a game against Texas A&M, even one on the road, and I would think, "That's a win."  From about the time Billy Gillespie arrived there, I could no longer expect a win against them; rather, I would hope for a win.  And a time or two, we pulled it off.

This year, I don't just think and hope we can do it.  I know we can.  We have a skilled and salty enough team to beat any of the remaining teams that come to our house.  And not only can beat them but should beat them.  I would consider it an upset if any of the teams left on our home schedule left Lincoln with a win.

I hoped we could win at Michigan State this year, but I didn't expect it.  I don't think we're better than them.  But I do think we're better than anyone left on our schedule except Wisconsin and we get them at home.

It just feels different this year.

Speculation is really fun, but an old Chinese philosopher once said, " One should not savor the omelette until the egg is cracked." I believe his name was Shang Ping.

You sir, made me spit out my coffee laughing.

i gotta agree...after the MSU game i was happy, but for the first time i wasn't on pins and needles all game thinking we'd blow it, and i wasn't surprised we won, this team has a different kind of swagger to it this year, you see it in how Parker plays this season, how pitch, shields, rivers handle themselves on the court, the im gonna make it and bury the dagger attitude from Terran, even though he isn't making shots and doing a lot, Tai seems to have that mindset right now, that im on the court doesn't look terrified.

The one thing Miles has been doing is consistently beating teams he's supposed to beat.

Last year's KenPom final rating was 130.  He went 10-1 against teams with a lower rating.

This year's KenPom rating is at 62.  He's gone 11-3 against currently lower rated teams. None of the losses have been at home.

If our job is to take care of the games we're supposed to be taking care of, that's right in Miles' wheel house.
